I've been running Mint 12. How can I migrate from 12 to Opensuse? What about my Thunderbird email and things I've saved?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 14032315

you cant really 'migrate' per se from one distro to another
back up your documents and files, and then re-install and restore your backup

it is , when all games go to it i will dump windows
 Quoting: AtsuiPanda

OpenSuse has a setting specifically for playing games.

Or, just run Wine.

It is a Windows emulator and will mount and run most Windows programs on Linux. Also check out playonlinux.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 34394289

Oh cool , But lets say if the game HAS to have something like direct X to launch will that work too?
 Quoting: AtsuiPanda

You got me on that one.

I'm a Linux noob.

Games are an issue, but Linux is on it for sure. They'll get there probably this year.

If you REALLY want to dive into and fully understand and learn Linux AND get the MOST out of it use Arch Linux.

arch linux is for nerds ... wouldnt suggest that for starters.. i havent bothered trying it because i dont like command lines and hassle to get it running, graphical systems that are fast to install is what i go for

ubuntu is the ultimate noob system .. mint if you arent that fixed on eyecandy and want a fast system thats easy to use.. opensuse if you have some understanding of linux and like eyecandy ..

then theres prob hundreds of other distros of all flavours, but those 3 basically covers all sorts of languages and are easiest to find info for

ill just add this, if your OS is linux and you still need to run the odd windoze program (microsoft visio or something like that, or tax software etc) and it wont run under wine you can install a windoze VM and be able to run both at the same time.

virtualbox is just as good as vmware workstation and it is free:

[link to www.virtualbox.org (secure)]

so you can have an instance of xp or win7 or whatever running at the same time in a vm on your desktop

and for the previous poster about directX i believe virtualbox has experimental accelerated graphics support (when running in full screen mode) and might work for your games. you would have to try it.

The smart thing to do is install Ubuntu (Mint is based off of Ubuntu and is updated after Ubuntu updates), and install the KDE desktop environment (what OpenSuse uses) if you don't like the Unity desktop. You can install any desktop environment you want for that matter or all of them at the same time. I have KDE, Unity, Enlightenment, Gnome, OpenBox, LXDE, Xfce, and Cinnamon all installed on my Ubuntu machine. When I get bored with one desktop environment I switch. The only advantage Linux Mint has over Ubuntu is the restricted codecs are pre-installed. For newbies that is the best distro.

Dual boot. Install Windows first, then Linux on top of it. When you want to game, boot into Windows - it's what I do. Luckily, most of my games are Steam, so I don't even need to do that, really. With WINE upping its game and an open-source port of DirectX coming soon, I won't have a reason to use Windows.

AS for OpenSUSE I don't really like RedHat based distros which OpenSUSE is. Prefer either Debian based ones like Ubuntu or from scratch ones like Arch Linux.

arch linux is for nerds ... wouldnt suggest that for starters.. i havent bothered trying it because i dont like command lines and hassle to get it running, graphical systems that are fast to install is what i go for

ubuntu is the ultimate noob system .. mint if you arent that fixed on eyecandy and want a fast system thats easy to use.. opensuse if you have some understanding of linux and like eyecandy ..

then theres prob hundreds of other distros of all flavours, but those 3 basically covers all sorts of languages and are easiest to find info for

Well yes Arch Linux is for those who want to take control of their OS

If you don't want to learn your OS and just use it to check email etc. etc. then Ubuntu, Linux Mint, OpenSUSE, Mageia are good choices in that order

i guess most want that when they try a new operative system .. they dont want to sit for a week and learn command lines before they figure out how to run firefox

That is a fact.

It discourages people big time.

Re: Linux is AWESOME!!!

True but you may as well just download Kubuntu if you are using the KDE desktop.

You should try Gentoo or LFS, Verensactus.

I have, just way too time consuming and they become less enjoyable as time goes on. I like the Arch Linux philosophy and the Pacman package manager and the AUR (Arch Linux User Repository). Arch Linux gives me the best balance of both worlds, power and ease of use without much sacrifice.
GET SAVED: Thread: Are you SAVED from DAMNATION?

"For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.

This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another." -- Galatians 5:14-26

Also, Windows doesn't have workspaces.

VERY cool feature. I like how you can have numerous workspaces and move things from space to space as you need them. WOW!

Of course it's wrong - real men use lynx in the terminal.
