Four certifications in Linux and counting. I started back in '98 with Free BSD (which is a UNIX distro) and Debian Linux at my first "tech" job at an ISP. Then I found Slackware, the grand daddy of Linux, still the best IMO. Been using Slack since 3.6.

Linux is a lot different these days, it's a LOT easier than it use to be, we use to make fun of Red Hat back in the day calling it MS Linux, now 99% of the *nix certifications are all Red Hat based even though they are supposed to be vendor neutral.

If you guys want to see the real power of Linux get one of the old school distros (SUSE is actually one of the old school distros) and don't install xwindows, use straight up console, THAT is truly amazing once you see what Linux can really do.

run openbsd and netbsd, and forget the mess that most other operating systems are.

I agree, started using ubuntu in 2007 as a dual boot with windows but went full linux on all machines as of 2011. Can't wait for the smartphone version to avoid android and iphone digital prison crap.

Count me as another happy FreeBSD user. It seems really complicated at first, and proves in the long run to be far simpler. Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of Linux (Mint in particular) and install it for a ton of people - but for me, FreeBSD will always be my favorite. The power I can eek out of this system is nothing short of incredible. I can have the full OS and (e17) desktop running and barely crack 100 megs of RAM usage. On a box with only 3 gigs total, I recently was rendering a 1920x1080 animation from Blender, working in HD in After Effects (VirtualBox!), working in Photoshop and browsing the web with zero slowdown :)

Using OpenSUSE is no different than using Windows or OSX. OpenSUSE is a corporate owned and developed OS.

You'd be better off using Mint.

I remember when I was 11 and thought FreeBSD and RedHat were the ELITEST.

I run Zorin on two desk tops and Zorin lite on a Acer aspire one netbook (came with xp and now is actually usable). Never had a problem since they were installed.

Currently using Windows 'cos I'm (supposed to be) working and use a lot of progs that sadly won't run on Linux.

Of course Gnu systems are great. Only problem is that we still don't have much control over the hardware, as much as GNU allows control over the software.

But stay away from any Ubuntu-based distro, and that includes Mint (although there's a strictly Debian version available). Too damn RAM-heavy, slow, and with 1 or 2 big brotherish features that I don't like.

Debian or other "lighter" distros will make your PC 2-3 times speedier.

garbage, graphical environment in NIX still sucs. after Windows they are sore eyes. I do not want to become blind penguin. And if nearby your does not live a programmer, do not put Linux to you comp, NEVER!

It means it is developed, tested and reviewed by numerous peers, that anyone can be, hence why it is safer than closed, proprietary crap.

trying to sound smart yet your conclusions are dumb, todays linux for desktop users does not require mounting anything outside of clicking just like windows.

Ah! Linux. I do miss it. Ran Red Hat for a while and then Mandriva. Loved having my desktop on a rotatable cube and being able to do everything with shell scripts (took me back to my old Amiga days). Currently only running Windoze because the CUDA drivers and Octane Render seem to run well on Vista. Must get round to buying a new hard drive and have dual-boot system again.

So you got the choice of either Big Brother Mac OS or Big Brother Windows. Bravo, idiot.

"NIX" has got a plethora of desktop environments for the eye candy, most of you probably don't even know. But eye candy is for noobs and lazies. Real geeks are in command line!

What you talking about? All the Nvidia drivers and 64 bit Octane are available for Linux. Just search.
