Should you do this, switch OS if you don't know that much about this stuff? What would be recommended reading before doing such a thing if so? Thanks.

I dont get this?
why does everyone think its hard to use?

I just tried out linux for the first time a few months ago to extend the life of my 10 year old desktop.

sill running a 3200+ single core, 2 gigs of ram, with two screens and linux has brought it back from the dead..

I dont know shit about the terminal or any fancy computer languages and it installed perfect the first time.

It comes with all the programs you need already

Its fucking free !!!!!

I havent had a crash or had to change any settings.

Linux is awesome, Try it on a usb drive if your scared..

I am just pissed I didn't switch over years ago..

Should one switch to Linux if you don't know much about computers? I know a little, but not as much as people here who are commenting.

If I should know more what would be recommended reading to get up to speed before switching to Linux?

Thanks.

That's a hard question to answer, and a lot of it has to do with what you are using your system for. Almost any windows software could be run in Linux, but if your daily routine requires regular use of such programs, it would probably be easier to stay put. If you are mainly browsing the web and doing standard office-type stuff, you could very easily switch without much hassle.

Best thing to do is to download and try a live CD from one of the big distros and see how you like it. It runs a little slow since it's not really installed, but it would give you a chance to play around without risking your current setup.

try something from here [link to www.ubuntu.com]
need fast system - try xubuntu (great for older machines)

you can install it next to windows (you will later choose OS at the startup)
just create a partition - 10-25GB is enough (entire system is about 5,5GB) and try it or better
install system on a usb stick and try live without installing
(just enable usb startup in bios and start from the usb)
you can always install it later

visit the page and there are instructions - its easy
the whole install process takes 10m

if you have both windows and linux you will have the option at each start to choose what system you want

I think you need to know more about computers if your on windows then linux

I am no expert computer wiz, I build houses for a living.

After installing windows a few hundred times throughout the years and dealing with days of uploading patches and drivers and every program you need to Photoshop and burn disc's, play music, and everything else that requires password keys, etc .. I say fuck windows..

Linux is up and running in 30 min from a fresh install.
Unless you use certain programs for work linux comes with everything you need already installed and everything else you need is free for the basic user. I will never go back, there is no need, linux is everything i ever wanted in a OS.

goto the linuxmint website and download the mint 14 mate file and install it on a usb stick.. you can boot it off your memory stick and try it out. just remove the stick and you get your windows back just the way it was ..

There is no harm in trying it, I am sure happy i did..

And its FREE !!!

Re: Linux is AWESOME!!!
Glad to see so many GLPers are loving Linux.
I have been using it since '95.
Loved it then and love it still.
Windows is ok, Win 8 kinda sucks balls.
I like Mac too. They still rule in the graphic editing department.
Gimp is growing and maybe they will catch up soon.
Sure Windows is great for games. But so is a XBOX.
Oh wait that is windows. :)
But for security and no hassle, Linux in all flavors rules.
Years ago it was a pain to setup and get all of the hardware working but know a monkey can do it.
I prefer Debian , but my system is a mix match of what ever I need from diffrent distros.

Rock on Linux!
Again if you want to just play games get a game console, XbOX Playstation what have ya.
