Re: How Many MINIMUM WAGE Hours Does it Take to Afford an Apartment in Your State?
It's all a lie.

From the dirty poor to the filthy rich.

Someone a long time ago said, "These happy, shiny metals prove your worth in the world."

And everyone believed it. We all bought into the same lie. Even now we argue who deserves more. Somehow people actually believe that having more means you work harder.

They will kill for it.
They will sell their bodies for it.
They will rid themselves of all integrity for it.
They will die for it.

They believe more of it means a successful life. It's a trap created by a system that ensnares by providing petty vices and useless entertainments. While the machine churns out more and more of the same type of conformist and cliche personalities, the more people blame what it creates, instead of the machine itself.

You hate those poor people. You hate those rich people. No, you just hate people because you worship money. That god is the disciple of all your dreams.

Re: How Many MINIMUM WAGE Hours Does it Take to Afford an Apartment in Your State?
a lot of people dramatizing sociopathy on this site. There's a lot of "I'm alright Jack..." attitude toward those who are apparently too "stupid", "retarded" or "lazy" to improve themselves and rise above minimum wage.

The fact is that many people cannot - they are too physically or mentally sick or traumatized. And the thing is that its often the case that they were put in that condition on purpose by the actions of the controllers of society. Just to take one example, autism has skyrocketed over the last couple decades. And its no accident.

Do you have moral contempt for people who are autistic, schizophrenic, functionally retarded, chronically fatigued, etc?

Be careful of playing the spiritual Darwinist - because the day is coming, it seems, where it will be decided that your services are also no longer required. And you'll have no moral ground to protest your own genocide. Then you will be one of the ones who was too stupid or weak to survive.

I make $11.50 an hour -

That's about $460 a week -

Rent, in FL, for a 1 Bedroom is $700ish a month.

So obviously, I'd need a roommate or "sublent" a room -

So at $1,8000 a month

$1,800
- 500 (for rent, mind you, this is me renting a room - so when I move out soon it'll be higher...)
$1,300
-100 (car insurance)
$1,200
-200 (gas for the month)
$1,000
-300 (food for the month)
$700
-$50 (cell phone)
$650.

I'm left with about $600 a month to play with....

Throw in a flat tire, or shopping for new clothes, or taking a girl out to dinner - and I'm one of those 1/4 Americans who live "paycheck to paycheck"

How much you wanna bet Brief works for the government? He's here 24 hours a day. So in between porn surfing and collecting his equal opportunity government work-for-welafre check he spends his workday here telling you how stupid and lazy you are. That or he doesn't work at all.

I'm a betting man. I'd put 20 on that even up.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 34378238

LOL, good thing you aren't a betting man, because you'd lose.

I'm not here 24 hrs, I work on a computer, but not for the government, I'm a financial counselor, the government isn't capable of taking my advice, I don't believe in borrowing money :)

Its just amazes me how as a general rule humans are unkind and unsympathetic to each other, as if they where independent entities that needed no one and lived in a planet of their one.

People dont make minimum wage because they want?!?! WTF LOL. The Dalai Lama states that all humans have the genuine and legitimate desire to be happy, nobody wants to be sad, or angry, how we go about it is what makes the difference.

So following this train of logic, yes, lack of degree, poor nutrition when children, no access to real education, having to work way before their time given their family needs, abusive families, an alcoholic father that beat the crap out of you, etc, etc, will all have to do with how much money someone makes, ie, causes and conditions.

Who wants to be poor?, nobody :).

But that's the great truth of life. LIFE IS NOT FAIR, nor can any amount of tinkering by TPTB make it fair. Results aren't fair. The best that can be done is to make the process equally accessible to all. Not Life, Liberty and Happiness, Life, liberty and the PURSUIT of happiness.

Minimum wage SHOULD be thought of as a temporary position for anyone, not a permanent standard from which to raise a family.

Oh, shit, I forgot to mention above -

If I want Health Insurance they want to take $190 a month! $200 a month basically for health insurance!

That'd drop me down from $600 to $400 right off the bat just for health insurance... aye yi yi.

I just bank on Youth and good DNA.... for now.

Do you work with Tards dude? I do, and you are wrong, they are paid below minimum wage plus the company generally gets some payment for doing so.

May I suggest GOOGLE as a good place to start learning and not assuming.

Wonder if you know that other jobs, such as Farm Labor also qualify for payment less than the Gov Minimum.

Minimum wage is just a starting point for teenagers and people just entering the workforce or the retired as a hobby, it is NOT designed as a career choice.
 Quoting: BRIEF

yet many with educations work at or a little above minimum wage, well into their 30s or more...because why? If there were enough jobs, you can bet all those people would be working them...human beings, when treated fairly don't choose to sit around or do the same thing (or nothing). It's a natural part of life to evolve...yet our systems encourage just the opposite.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1271534

I agree entirely.

In the mid 90s, no one really cared what minimum wage was, because if you were an able adult, even with little experience, you could fetch a decent job for 10-15 bucks an hour, no prob.

After around 2007, that has changed DRASTICALLY. I know more recent college grads working close to minimum wage than EVER before.

And you know what? Even the people I know working 10-15dllars/hr right now, they don't have even CLOSE to the same purchasing power as 10-15dollars/hr got you in the mid 90s.

THAT is why they are raising minimum wage. Not only can no one really survive on minimum wage, but nowadays, even being SINGLE, its hard to survive on 9-12dollars/hr.

If you are like me, and have a family to support, good luck surviving on 10-15anhour, PERIOD.

The fact is, you guys can list a million reasons why people might be in a troubled situation. That's actually a good point. The point being EVERYONE has troubles. EVERYONE has problems in this life. There are no guarantees in life, the best that can be done, what most people want, is to have the government leave them alone, and let them pave their own way. No guarantees of equal results. I mean, I freelance write articles - that brings in a little extra income - I have an internship right now with a radio station that I hope will open doors.

But.... yeah.

Re: How Many MINIMUM WAGE Hours Does it Take to Afford an Apartment in Your State?
OP, I'm late to the party on this thread, but there's so many variables. I do agree, it's very tough to live on minimum wage.

I'm in Arkansas - state minimum wage is $6.25, however the federal is $7.25. Not sure about other states, but here, the federal rate overrides the state wage...therefore, it's $7.25/hr here.

Now, in my area, a person can acquire a one bedroom apartment for about $350/month. Doing the math right there, it's about 48 hrs of work to be able to make rent. That's not factoring in whether a person could potentially increase their ability with OT hrs.

To me, if a person can pay their rent with one week's pay, they are living within their means. Again, that's just for a single person, and whether they have kids or not, debt, personal issues, etc only stacks onto the equation.

Mind you, the $350/month apartment mentioned above is small, possibly way lower than average, and would most definitely not accommodate a single person with kids.
I'm not a doctor; I don't have patience.

I never said anything about equal results. There's a huge gap between honestly doing to best we can to make life fair and the satanic human farming operation that we are trapped in. In fact, its the people who follow the rules, pay their bills, etc - that are doing the most harm. Because their energy gives legitimacy to the human farm and sustains it. Apple Computer is a good archetypal representation of the system - billionaires at the top living off the back of workers who are driven to suicide so often that FoxCon has had to put up nets around the building to catch people when they jump. Those who make statements like "get a job" are in fact supporters of the human farm system - because things are working out ok for them.

First if you earn minimum wage then claim 10 dependents on your w4.

This will have your employer deduct hadly any federal withholding from your paycheck.

You wont make enough to owe anything at the end of the year anyway so why give uncle sam an interest free loan?

Second... its a fact that a "minimum wage" pushes out jobs. Period.

I own a service station (hypothetically). During the summer some 14 year old kids with nothing to do but get in trouble could get a job wiping windshields and pumping gas. Nope. At 7.25 /hr its unnafforadble
Go ride your bikes all day kids and get arrested with nothing to do.

Minimum wage is not meant to support families.

And if raising it "helped" people why don't we make it 100 $ an hour and all be rich?

To answer the question though I found a two bedroom apartment here with utilities for 700 a month. Not the best part of town not the worst either.

So at 700 a month one would need to work about 100 hours.

Or two roommates each working about 50.

But kids these days are huge whiny pussies who cant handle living with roommates or having to turn the thermostat to a slightly uncomfortable level to get by....

It's what we all did. Gen y quit being such whiny ass bitches.

This is the dumbest fucking thread topic in history.

Why is an apartment an assumed "right"? Op????

When I was growing up first getting out on my own it wasnt uncommon to rent a room (ever heard of that shit op?) or sleep on a buddies couch and throw him a case of beer a week!

The minimum wage should be abolished.

Businesses compete for labor. All the minimum wage does is eliminate entry level jobs for people.

Don't fucking complain about not having skills and then ask for a higher minimum wage u fucking libtards!

That welding shop down the street might have hired u as a youngster to apprentice if it didnt mean a "minimum wage" but no the feds fucked you out of that free education.

That auto body shop might have hired u to sweep it out once a week during that summer you didn't do shit. You may have learneda great trade during that time. Nope feds fucked you again out of a free education.

No one owes you ANYTHING!

Second... its a fact that a "minimum wage" pushes out jobs.

Re: How Many MINIMUM WAGE Hours Does it Take to Afford an Apartment in Your State?
I make $11.50 an hour -

That's about $460 a week -

Rent, in FL, for a 1 Bedroom is $700ish a month.

So obviously, I'd need a roommate or "sublent" a room -

So at $1,8000 a month

$1,800
- 500 (for rent, mind you, this is me renting a room - so when I move out soon it'll be higher...)
$1,300
-100 (car insurance)
$1,200
-200 (gas for the month)
$1,000
-300 (food for the month)
$700
-$50 (cell phone)
$650.

I'm left with about $600 a month to play with....

Throw in a flat tire, or shopping for new clothes, or taking a girl out to dinner - and I'm one of those 1/4 Americans who live "paycheck to paycheck"

GOD BLESS THE USA!

Go shopping for your clothes at Goodwill and thrift stores. Buy only your undergarments new. And cook your date dinner at home. If she turns her nose up at that then get rid of her and find someone else. So you will now have more money for the unexpected things like flat tires, etc.

Oh, shit, I forgot to mention above -

If I want Health Insurance they want to take $190 a month! $200 a month basically for health insurance!

That'd drop me down from $600 to $400 right off the bat just for health insurance... aye yi yi.

I just bank on Youth and good DNA.... for now.

Don't worry. There is always help for people who don't make a lot of money if they get hurt and hospitalized. Better to take that money and put it in savings to help with real emergencies.

thats stealing are you telling this person its ok to steal from the hand that feeds yourself and family?this is whats wrong with amerika, that kind of thinking 'Im not entitled to get help from the state so I'll take what's yours' sheesh

I'd hate to break it to you but we pay for those burgers with our tax dollars. the government subsidizes corn which in turn is sold extremely cheap to the big burger chains to feed it to their cows. that's where the 1 dollar burger comes from.
