| Anonymous Coward User ID: 1550123 02/14/2013 08:34 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | OP, I'm late to the party on this thread, but there's so many variables. I do agree, it's very tough to live on minimum wage. Quoting: TeChNoXiC® I'm in Arkansas - state minimum wage is $6.25, however the federal is $7.25. Not sure about other states, but here, the federal rate overrides the state wage...therefore, it's $7.25/hr here. Now, in my area, a person can acquire a one bedroom apartment for about $350/month. Doing the math right there, it's about 48 hrs of work to be able to make rent. That's not factoring in whether a person could potentially increase their ability with OT hrs. To me, if a person can pay their rent with one week's pay, they are living within their means. Again, that's just for a single person, and whether they have kids or not, debt, personal issues, etc only stacks onto the equation. Mind you, the $350/month apartment mentioned above is small, possibly way lower than average, and would most definitely not accommodate a single person with kids. Kids can have the bedroom while the parent sleeps on a fold out bed in the living room. Before that would happen though the parent would probably have state assistance for at least a two bedroom with food stamps and all medical paid. |

You blame the businesses when it is actually the government fucking them and you. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 33931923 But it was supposed to be free, and save us trillions of dollars!!!! Its only free for those who already don't work and already get free care on someone else's dime. If you work and earn a wag, you will be required to pay something, comes right out of your disposable income. |
| Awake User ID: 3936560 02/14/2013 08:48 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hey AC, Quoting: MuzzleBreak The rent is per month, so the hours would be per month also, not per week. Two or three people working minimum wage jobs could easily share a 2 bedroom apt. If you're wanting to live like the wealthy while doing a job that any teenager could do, it's not gonna happen. You forget that you have to make three times the rent amount to even get an apt these days. |

Hours per month at min wage to afford: 95.862 Site lists: 106 hours/wk or $3074 per month. I have not seen an apartment going for this rate. So if 2 people work there would $1625 left over after rent per month. Of course this doesn't factor in taxes. Water is included in the apartment, and though heat and electricity are not included, this situation would likely qualify for some kind of fuel assistance program for winter. If a kid was involved, there could be up to $200 in food stamps per month as well, more for additional kids. The only people holed up 10 to a 2 bedroom here are the Nepalese immigrants when they first get here. After 6 months or so it's just to a single family because they all get jobs, cars, and their own apartments. I mean, I know times are hard for people and the system is rigged to keep the masses down, but gross exaggerations like this site discredit "the cause". So obviously, I'd need a roommate or "sublent" a room - So at $1,8000 a month $1,800 - 500 (for rent, mind you, this is me renting a room - so when I move out soon it'll be higher...) $1,300 -100 (car insurance) $1,200 -200 (gas for the month) $1,000 -300 (food for the month) $700 -$50 (cell phone) $650. I'm left with about $600 a month to play with.... Most of us did at one point. My first job, summer of 1989, I earned $3.35/hour. The minimum wage jumped up at the end of the summer to $3.85. I am one of those people that escaped being poor. I grew up mostly poor, not totally impoverished, but poor. I put myself through college without help from my parents. I now have a master's and a good paying career level job. I think the minimum wage argument is a red herring. Really, the way out of minimum wage is education. They should be talking about expanding the Pell Grant and forgiving student loans. If you don't ever get an education you are destined to be at the mercy of the minimum wage. I'm not rich but I will end up better than my parents and I hope that my children will be better off than me. |
