I have not used it in years. Torrents pretty much took usenet's place. I doubt you will find maps, etc. there. Read on on Forte Free Agent newsreader and how to set it up. Your ISP may not offer usenet groups or limit them. There used to be paid providers. The data is not out there forever, so "retention" of old things will be limited.

You are not likely to find "classified" data on Usenet

Library of Congress has great old historical maps. I downloaded and had a print made of an old map of my hometown as a present for my dad one year. Sorry I don't have a link, OP but there was also a bunch of historical info to accompany this particular map as well.

Use one of the clients to download like sabnzbd. It has a browser based gui.

To find stuff you can use one of the search engines on the net like binsearch.

Not sure you will find what you are looking for there. As someone else mentioned, there is a retention limit on all the providers. Think the highest is about 1200 days or so.

3. find USENET server

4. tell client to connect to server

5. download list of newsgroups

6. SUBSCIRB!!! to whatever groups you want

7. client downloads messages in those groups, you read them

now you done it!

Usenet doesn't have a search engine. Say for instance you were looking for a keyword in the body of a message. Sorry can't do that. Best you can do is hope that your keyword is in the message header.
Usenet used to be good for lots of things. Sadly, you missed the boat by atleast a dozen years.
