Do we have (somewhere) a projected trajectory of which parts of the earth it is over at it's closest approach times? Does it come up from the south pole, or cross from east to west or west to east? Just what is supposed to be it's path during the crossing??

I have not seen this info online, but that doesn't mean it's not there and I've perhaps missed it. Anyone else found that info, yet?

BTW: if NASA is saying it could undergo seismic activity due to our gravity field, then they're also giving themselves a "way out" if the thing hits the earth. They will blame it on a shift in course due to a small quake caused by our gravity effecting the rock above us.

Just pray that if (heaven forbid) it should hit the earth, that it avoids nuclear plants and close proximity to the shores of any country. If it were to hit mid-pacific ocean and generate a huge tsunami, we'd at least have some time to warn the affected countries and evacuate their beach areas before the waves got there.

Given some of NASA's comments today, it would seem as if they're trying to give themselves a plausible "way out" if it should hit. Oh, and the Russians are still predicting an impact as of 7 AM this morn according to PRAVDA and the BBC.

It is not so much that there are asteroid experts in this thread. Many are just using common sense, and basic mathematical skills.


Nothing of what NASA said in the article is either alarming, nor hard to believe. That is why I don't understand the distrust.

Has he already mentioned tremors regarding this asteroid? or is it a case of "I knew it would tremor but didn't think it was worth mentioning as it won't alter its trajectory"

To the regular, non-paranoid person, this article isn't of much importance, unless you particularly enjoy studying this aspect of astronomy.

Nothing about the article has anything to do with conspiracy, doom, or ANYTHING besides the study of astronomy. Why then the interest in it on here?

While NASA may not have recorded it they have seen tidal forces effecting an asteroid/comet when Shoemaker–Levy 9 approached Jupiter.

While a comet doesn't have the structure of an asteroid they should both be effected similarly but to different degrees.

Unless NASA has landed a probe on that rock flying by, they will get little -if any- meaningful data regarding "seismic" activity on it during its flyby. Which makes me also wonder why NASA would bother putting out this report. No trusting NASA.

If it's valued at 195b this admistration will spend a couple of trillion to get it.

Exactly, seems a bit strange to think of "seismic tremors" on such a small object, I think that the fear is: That the earth's gravitational pull will create very strong vibrations on the Asteroid, risking either to change it's course on earth, or break it apart,which could then change it's direction...

I have a guess I've been sitting on for a few days, well, ever since the thread about said asteroid 'getting bigger as it gets closer to earth', that is..... I think it's on a collision course & it's a hell of a lot bigger than they're saying it is. I think they're going to try to use some sort of tech on it to push it out of its current trajectory & away from Earth & this is the approved "CYA" message in case they make a bunch of 30-40 yard wide 'little meteorites' that will slam into Earth, one right after the other, if they get it wrong. *shrug* just a theory......

Because it will enter a weak gravitational field rather suddenly. Its release from the gravitational affect could also cause the rock to judder.

NASA is a bloated, inept, politicized government organization. I wouldn't put much stock in anything they say.

couldnt seismic activity move it off its course?

im guessing the activity comes from being so close to earth?
