NYC Mayor Bloomberg: Starting Next Month, No Jail for Marijuana Possession

Does it have to be under 16 ounces?

The weed imported into this country will be tampered with, hence this policy.

MARK MY WORDS, we will see crazy, whacked out people (really, demon possession) on a high level now.

And I repeat, the weed will be tampered with. Good thing I stopped smoking last year.

I'm all for changing our stupid and expensive drug laws....however....

Bloomberg seems to think he can rule by decree, screw the voters, apparently he is king of New York.

Under his decree, I guess it's still illegal to grow, buy or sell MJ, but it's legal to possess it. Not sure how you can possess it without doing one of those other things.

What about the people already in jail for possession?

I stopped awhile ago but now I'm worried I'll get eaten, lol...and not in a fun way.

Grown your own.

Maybe no jail...at first....but the overall charges still apply according to this.

Bloomberg is a POS no matter how you square it.
He's going after styrofoam cups now too.

So they want you all drugged up and unarmed,nothing like the truth straight from the corrupt horses mouth.

It's a start...

This way, they get the money from all the fines, but without the overhead from locking people up.

It's all about the moolah.

Portugal did this long time ago. Results? Young kids don't want to smoke it JUST because they're free to do it + hard drug consuming dropped really hard to the lowest levels ever.

So yeah, good for NY and he USA.

Unless I'm missing something the article said this:

"I support Governor Cuomo’s proposal to make possession of small amounts of marijuana a violation, rather than a misdemeanor and we’ll work to help him pass it this year. But we won’t wait for that to happen."

So presently people are probably still being locked up but according to Bloomberg they will seek to make it on par with a DPO (Disorderly Persons Offense) rather than a crime (misdemeanor/felony) that you can face jail time for.

I already noted it above in an earlier post...
....but since we have reading comprehension issues on this thread...

What does that generalized, blanket statement infer to a person who reads it? That people will still go to jail for marijuana possession?

The quote you provided does not speak of anyone being sent to jail for simple possession and subsequently having to post bail to be released. Being taken to the precinct to have a background check run and a court summons issued is not 'going to jail'. Additionally, having to appear in court on a summons does not guarantee you will get sentenced will jail time.

The title of the link you're providing is labeled 'Starting Next Month No Jail For Marijuana Possession'.

If the mayor is proclaiming 'no jail time' for marijuana possession and he is true to his word, than he would also be addressing the statutory 'sentencing guidelines' for the offense - which is administered by the judge when you appear in court.

In your original reply your statement went from a definitive 'they are still being locked up' to 'probably still being locked up' and "doesn't mean you're not going to jail necessarily'. That paints two different pictures to a person exercising reading comprehension.



That's not really important though. In most areas the laws will not suddenly change overnight. It's often necessary that there is a slow transition into a more lax approach to enforcement which will help pave the way to more rational & sensible policy with regards to marijuana possession (ultimately decriminalization & legalization). There are surrounding cities/areas that are ahead of NYC with this measure and have already moved to make simple possession a ticketable offense. NYC is just moving to follow suit in a growing nationwide trend.
