I have a dumb question. How does NASA know that the asteroid won't explode or break apart while passing by and its fragments not hit the earth?
 Quoting: sunshine4mealwayz

Exactly what I am thinking. Then we have all the news that keeps changing. They had it up there in big words on CNN a few minutes ago about how the meteorite in Russia has nothing to do with "GIANT" asteroid which is doing fly by today. What Giant asteroid. I thought this was small??
 Quoting: pmb1

And could something affect its path if it hits a satellite ???

What confuses me a lot is: amateur astronomers, nasa, ESa, etc, can detect and predict all kinds of shit flying around, but that Astroid taht hit russia, nobody spoke about it until it hit....

Astro,

Is it possible that debris was pulled off or otherwise and pulled around the earth? Just seems so coincidental that they are on same path area of Russia...

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 34417457

No. Yes, it is coincidental. Russia was facing the opposite way in the solar system at the time of the hit, towards the sun. It's meaningless that hours later 2012 DA14 passes over it because at that time Russia is facing a completely different direction in space.

what it means is that theres a whole bunch of asteroids coming in not just da14. but a cloud of them, mostly too small for us to see. get ready for multiple impacts.

That's when Clay can start to see it. The US doesn't rotate into position to view until hours after closest approach when the asteroid is already on its way out.

2 lessons after today:
1. NASA neo program is useless if they can't see the one and only recorded case.
 Quoting: Greek Coward 300487

Why do you lie?
They found 2008 TC3 and accurately predicted its impact in Sudan some 20 hours later.
And there are in fact a large number of cases of big impact events.
Tunguska ring a bell?
The Eastern Mediterranean event?

What is special of today's event is that it happened over a relatively densely populated area.

2. Astronomical time is huge and nothing at the same time if you consider the odds for 2 different asteroids with different trajectories entering earth's atmosphere within 24 hours!
 Quoting: Greek Coward 300487

So, WHAT are those odds?
Do you know that several dozen tonnes of space material enters Earth's atmosphere every day?

Rocks have always been falling out of the sky.
Little ones, and big'uns.
Sooner or later something really big will hit us, unless we do something about it.
Criticising the people who have at least taken the first step of doing something about it does not help.
In fact you should send these people money: [link to b612foundation.org]

I have a dumb question. How does NASA know that the asteroid won't explode or break apart while passing by and its fragments not hit the earth?
 Quoting: sunshine4mealwayz

Why would an asteroid spontaneously do that?
And how would the fragments acquire the speed to cover such a distance in such a short time.

The Pope's Death Star peekaboos from behind the Moon and turbolasers it?

Then we have all the news that keeps changing. They had it up there in big words on CNN a few minutes ago about how the meteorite in Russia has nothing to do with "GIANT" asteroid which is doing fly by today. What Giant asteroid. I thought this was small??
 Quoting: pmb1

It's CNN.

Expecting decent science reporting from the MSM is like expecting a beggar to give you change.
book

NASA can send a human to the moon and back, place remote devices on mars, etc...yet they can't detect a meteor hitting the earth...yea right!
 Quoting: Voiper

As pointed out above, they can.

They are however not magicians.
Write a letter to your Congress critter demanding the funding for a means to detect meteoroids coming from the Sun's direction.

When you look at this link and click on the tracking feature, it is obvious that there are satellites in the way of the asteroid. CNN keeps saying that there is no way it will hit any of them, but how is that possible?
