I was wondering the same thing. Figured as it slung around the Earths and it's gravity it would actually speed it up a little? Can anyone help educate me on this? Is at 4.5 km/s now.

That's the rate of approach, not total relative velocity. It will reach 0 when it reaches the point of closest approach.
