Re: weird phone calls
How many of yo are getting those damn calls about going back to school all the fricking time?
I get at least three of those a day and it's always someone who cannot speak good English. It's Pakistani or some Indian fucker!

I keep telling them no, I'm not interested but maybe they should consider going to school cuz it's obvious they need the English lessons.

Re: weird phone calls
The other day I got a call from a random number. I answered, and all it said was "you are going to die, diiiiiie, die now, monster, die." It sounded like a recording, not an actual live person. It ended with a high pitch, blood curdling female scream, and then cut off. It scared the hell out of me. I was afraid, and then angry, so I tried to call it back. It immediately kicked over to an operator saying "this line is no longer in service." Fucking creepy.

Re: weird phone calls
I get a few calls a day...very annoying. I have renewed my "do not call" information, but to no avail.

In the past 4 years, the calls have increased. That "do not call" list was once enforced by the government, but they don't care anymore.

The calls I receive are from various area codes. They once were identified on caller ID as "Out of Area," or 1-800 numbers, so I didn't pick up. Now, they come from my area code plus various other area codes.

When I answer, there is silence, but then a recorded message comes on, and they're giving me a discount on something. Today I was "chosen for"...probably lowering my credit card bills, but I hung up before I found out. My caller ID said it was from Florida.

The government promised to do something about it, and they did....but that was five years ago.
 Quoting: nutmeg

I used to have a problem with unwanted calls until I followed some advice a friend told me.
When you answer the phone and hear silence, without putting the phone down, quickly hit numbers randomly on your phone. Then put your phone down.
If it is a call centre, apparently it misleads their automatic dialing machine into thinking it is calling a fax machine and it throws your number off the list. It seems to have worked for me.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 33921865

Thanks so much!! Sometimes I will purposely wait to tell a person kindly..."Please take me off your calling list."

A week or two later....they're calling me again. ARGH!

Thanks again! Much appreciated!

Re: weird phone calls
There are call centers that continually call numbers in order of sequence (555-1212, 555-1213, 555-1214 etc). They get away with it because they are classed as survey companies since the "do not call list" doesn't ban survey companies. Many of them are run out of foreign countries. They are not always surveys though and will occasionally try to sell you something.

If you pick one of these calls up it is either dead air, it hangs up, or sometimes goes to a recording to hold. Sometimes you'll get a live person, but that is infrequent. They might call several times a day for weeks on end. If you ever get a hold of someone live, immediately tell them to remove you from their list and don't call anymore.

The other day my phone which is always plugged into its charger sitting next to me, didn't ring but the voice mail said out loud that I had a new voicemail message. My phone never rang, there was no voicemail on my phone and my history showed noone had called me. This had never ever happened before. My phone is set to go to voicemail only after many many rings, and whenever I get a call, even if it hangs up before my voicemail catches it will always show in my history.
My phone is new,and working perfectly so I don't know what happened that day.

And you fell for the trap. They now have records of you calling those numbers.

They are now hacking your facebook and preparing your suicide note, fake threatening notes to the 3 people you "called" and so on.

If it's a 800 or 888 number I don't get it. Also if it's an Midwest or east coast area code, I don't pick up. Also newspaper company's call me a lot and hospitals wanting money for cancer kids. Only people I give too is the local Fire Fighters. They just call one time a year, and I figure sometime they might actually save me. When the local police union guild calls (they call often) I say I cannot give. I figure some day they might shoot me for reaching for my cellphone.

Pulled a good one yesterday. A guy with an Indian accent called assuring me it wasn't a sales call. He asked if I had any back problems. No.
Lower back problems. No.
Any shoulder trouble. Nope.
Knee or ankle pain. Nope.
Here's where it got good...
How about urination? My nation, I like it.
No, urination. Well, it's got some problems but it's OK.
NO I mean urination! My nations just fine, how about yours?
NO! urination problems! Look, is this a political call? No I mean urination trouble!
I don't want to talk about my nation with a stranger, OK?. Click

I kept the guy going for ten minutes and he didn't get I was jerking his chain. Just couldn't resist. And laughed all day about it.

It could be Scotland Yard and London Police investigating this RIGHT NOW - (they just made it official a couple of hours ago more arrests have been done and they found a wider network and more involved in this:)

CLANDESTINE SHADOW PHONE NETWORK also referred to as an INTERNATIONAL INTRANET

CLANDESTINE SHADOW PHONE NETWORK also referred to as an INTERNATIONAL INTRANET

"Neuromancer" anyone?

That is a reference to the 1984 novel by WILLIAM GIBSON that in many ways foreshadowed the internet and much more about our society in the future. That future is now.

ACCORDING TO A SOURCE : There is a deep shadow network behind the traditional telephone network that you only get access to by invitation and involves people who are on the criminal side as well as no doubt, government and alphabet agency types who tap into phone calls and then sell them on a black market for lots of money to for example HIGH FREQUENCY TRADERS (HFTs) who then use this info to make trades, currency calls etc. You can see where a network like this can be very advantageous to the participants.

FURTHER: This also relates back to the recent MURDOCH TELEPHONE TAPPING SCANDAL ... because what apparently did not come out during that inquiry and trial is that Murdoch's boys did not have to tap anyone's phone directly. Instead they simply connected with an individual who then gave them access to this hidden phone network and told them what calls from which people they wanted to PURCHASE... and paid them for the 'tapped calls'.

The layers of this also relate to previous blog posts made here about for example the guy who purchased an ANDROID PHONE and suddenly had access to all the hidden CIA files on not only himself but thousands of others. And ANOTHER GUY who clued me into the shadow internet several floors below the current one where you only gain entry via invitation and you are then given access through a portal of sorts.. where your web surfing tracks CANNOT BE TRACED ... and you simply immerse yourself to do business then surface through another portal/rabbit hole at the other end... with no trace of having been off the surface. You gotta love this black market world.

Seriously, this info on phone tapping and then selling for high money the calls of the well known and the not so well known to players who want to be IN THE KNOW has vast implications. We all know Echelon and the satellite network through government is spying on us but do we also want our phone calls offered for sale to the highest bidder so they can use the info as they see fit in a black market where black market criminals and those with money have access? Perhaps it's all the same in the end.

Murdoch’s Circle: The Growing News International Scandal
[link to www.propublica.org]
by Lena Groeger
ProPublica, Yesterday, 4:50
This chart, which has been updated, was originally published February 15th.

From phone hacking to bribery, the corruption at News International has involved many players -- increasingly, ones close to Rupert Murdoch. We’ve mapped out the players involved in this growing debacle, organized by their proximity to Rupert Murdoch, James Murdoch and other senior staff. Keep in mind that in the United Kingdom, officers can make arrests without a formal charge (this Slate explainer provides more details on the British system).

Six more arrests in hacking scandal
[link to www.watoday.com.au]

LONDON: British police have arrested six former News of the World journalists in a new investigation into alleged phone hacking at Rupert Murdoch's defunct tabloid.

Scotland Yard said investigators had identified a ''further suspected conspiracy''
at the paper in 2005 and 2006, separate to the alleged hacking under which a number of people have already been charged.

Two of those arrested on Wednesday now work at the The Sun, according to an internal memo by the chief executive of News International, the British newspaper wing of Mr Murdoch's US-based News Corp empire.

British media named the two Sun journalists as Rachel Richardson and Jane Atkinson, and the other four detainees as the former assistant editor Jules Stenson, former features editor Matt Nixson and former showbusiness editors Rav Singh and Polly Graham.

The News of the World closed in disgrace in 2011 amid allegations it had hacked the mobile phone voicemails of hundreds of celebrities, politicians, and victims of crime and terrorism.

''Detectives on Operation Weeting have identified a further suspected conspiracy to intercept telephone voicemails by a number of employees who worked for the now defunct News of the World newspaper,'' Scotland Yard said.

Police said they arrested three men aged 46, 39 and 45, two women aged 33 and 40 in London, and a 39-year-old woman in Cheshire.

//Those already facing trial over hacking at the News of the World include Andy Coulson, formerly the spokesman for the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, and Rebekah Brooks, the former chief executive of News International.

Operation Weeting was launched in 2011 to investigate a string of allegations over hacking at the News of the World.
