In the past 20 minutes I've received 3 calls from different area codes... each time there is silence.

Called back all 3 and all 3 have said they did not call me...

I imagine its my friends fucking with me, but what better place to check to see if anyone else is getting things like this than here...

Well? Bueller? Bueller?

I can explain it. It's a call center. What they do is call you and put YOU on hold until one of their prisoners is available to speak with you.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 560401

I agree, I get them several times a week. I was also told that they ring at different times with no intentions of answering you so they can get an idea of a time you will be available to speak.

I like how you think. If I don't recognize the name on my caller ID I don't answer the phone. No exceptions. And if I'm not expecting anyone at my door I don't answer.
 Quoting: truthwillsetyoufreeagain

Bad idea on the not answering the door. At very least, ask who it is. Lots of daytime home invasions happening here in So Cal. The MO? Knock on the door during the day, if no answer, go around back and kick a door in. This is happening quite a bit. There's been cases where women have been home alone and not answered the door. Needless to say.. These haven't ended well at all!
Just so you all know. Be safe. If you ask who it is, and you don't know them, don't worry about being rude and saying I'm not opening the door. What do you care if you offend a stranger. And this goes for people in uniform too. Utility workers, mail carriers etc. If they have something to say, they can say it through the door. If they need a signature, tell them to leave it on the door mat and step back. If they come at you, you have time to step back and slam the door.
There are a few sickos out there. Don't live in fear, but always be aware..
 Quoting: Gthree777

Very good advice, but I actually live in a very safe co-op apartment with a locked vestibule in the lobby and an intercom. And if someone came to one of the floors and tried to pick one of the two locks that everyone has on their steel door, they'd last about 40 seconds before they were confronted by multiple people.

I know what you are saying though. It's happens. What always amazes me is that some people will just throw open the door if the bell rings. Or even stranger, some people don't lock their doors, even when sleeping. Not in my area but I've heard that happening elsewhere. Probably less now than in the past though.

If someone says they need a signature, I would advise them against telling the person to step back and then answer. They could be jumped the second they opened the door. Find out where the person is from and tell them to come back later. In the meantime call UPS or whatever it is and verify that you have a package coming.

A friend of mine got a random call from a lady.

He'd only had the phone for a few days and he got into a conversation with her.

They kept in touch for a few weeks and decided to meet up.

They are married now.

FATE.

Make the most of it!

Find out their fax number and fax them black sheets of paper.

That's what I did today to a telemarketer that has been calling my house everyday on and off for months. I asked them to take me off the list and they said they can't. I told them I am on the do not call register...they don't care.

So I figured I'll use up their ink.

They were not happy.

when my phone rings and i get the dead air open line i spit venom and vulgarity into the empty phone. i found bill collectors now run calling software that screens calls for real humans and not answering machine pickup.

maybe the software can't make up its program purpose to id a human voice and an answer machine voice so it stays silent

I had a similar incident. I got like three calls, all showing as a different out of state number. I didn't answer. My house phone rings and my Dad says why didn't you answer your cell phone?
I had him call my cell phone standing right next to me, sure enough it was showing again as a different out of state number. This time I answered it. Who is this? There was a woman on the other line, she said you know who this is and then just started laughing. You know who this is, she kept saying over and over again.
I was hoping for Morpheous. Any how, I got on here to see if others were having a similar problem. I'm speculating that it has something to do with the Comet.

I have a home phone only for emergencies if my kid is here alone (he doesn't have a cell phone). I never answer it and I don't listen to the voice mails. Ever. No one I care about has this number so I assume those are all bs.

My cell? Everyone I care about knows I don't listen to voicemail. If I miss their call, I will see it and call them back. They can text me if it's urgent. If it's a number I don't recognize, I don't answer it. And the voicemail box is full so they can't leave a message.

It is literally impossible to reach me by phone unless I know who is calling.

OP is not lying. Same thing happened to me today around 5:45pm and lasted for about an hour. The same exact thing, random numbers calling me and when I would answer no one was there, and when I called them back they said they didn't call...it happened with both local and out of state calls. I was also told that people were trying to call me, but it wouldn't ring at all, and not even get my voicemail.

Re: weird phone calls
Maybe I should start a separate thread but will try it here first as I can't prove a damn bit of what I am about to say.

First my wife knows that I am a 'Truther' and she is skeptical.

We were out for our annual Valentines Day dinner when her cell phone (which is old school - a basic phone and text unit) It buzzes and she pulls it out and looks at it and goes "Oh my God it says US Government on it".

She shows it to me and the screen starts flashing and goes black but I did see US Government showing on the screen. I said your screen just went black to which she pressed the OK and on/off buttons and the screen came back but it was flashing and had a message that said 'my password=4831' with a bunch of gibberish but the US Government text was gone.

I asked if that was a password that meant anything to her and she said no. Then her phone's screen started half flashing half not, the screen photo split into two of the same, then the whole screen was pulsating weirdly then it crashed.

She yanked the battery waited for a couple of minutes then put it back in but the screen is still fucked up with the pulsing shit.

The other thing about this is we are in Canada and she works for the government and it was her work phone.

Strange fucking shit man!

Re: weird phone calls
Have received silent telephonecalls aswell, mostly someone trying to ring from abroad, as proves to be the case afterwards.

Then there is also the trick by criminals, who want to know whether someone's at home, before burglaring.

But it has also been suggested that some silent calls are intended to gather info from your voice on different energylevels, like reading various aspects of your condition and specific info, through advanced psycho-electronic applications from e.g. governmental origin and once your voice is heard, the line goes dead. I got the distinct impression that might be the case with some of these calls.

Sometimes it could even involve psychometric reading by lower astral entities, interfering with your telephone line or wireless reception, or indeed some relative trying to reach you from beyond the grave, who knows !

A friend of mine once got a phonecall from a deceased person and the friend answered that he or she was dead and then the line went silent. So perhaps she should have listened to this deceased person respectfully and learned something, instead of blurting out that he or she was dead, that was actually quite discouraging to the entity trying to make contact !
