Attn PC Gamers: Steam on Linux NOW a Reality!
Steam has just released a Linux (Ubuntu specific) version. I have no idea as to the extent of the offerings (probably sparse), but it's AWESOME that they did this.

Gotta start somewhere right?

There's an implicit level of trust that is required when you run ANY binary from ANYONE. Free, closed source, Steam, Apple, Microsoft, Google. All of them. Of course.

Having said that, IF you are a PC gamer and you have a choice (which prior to today you did not), which OS would you choose to play your game on?

At least you have a choice (limited as it may currently be).

Peace.

I never thought of the possibility that Steam might actually be affiliate of the Feds. Good point!

You think they might really be the mysterious S.T.E.A.M. ??

Private corporations are now required to work with the government and your information. In essence, the government can force Steam to download to, or upload from your machine.

Nothing concrete....but based on the Win7 / Win8 backdoors it's a given they want some way into a Linux box too.
What better way then to create a media/gamer honeypot / Trojan Horse?
People like you are willing to accept it just because it's cool....just like the ancient Greek Trojan Horse
If I was a FED.....that would be my idea of an IDEAL carrier for something like that.
Although I'm sure they would use a shotgun method of honeypots too.
More trojan horse / honeypots...the better the capture rate of Linux boxes.

ALWAYS assume the worst with this current out of control government.
ALWAYS.

I dig what you're saying. As an open source advocate, I can assure you that Steam will be bitch-slapped into eternity (in the Linux world) if it is EVER determined that they are playing foul.

How would we in the hacker community know this? Wireshark, tcpdump, hexdumps, etc. Steam knows this. As we speak, there's 10,000 people trying to find ANY excuse to slam STEAM. Hell, Ubuntu is being watched now too.

They have been given the OK by the Linux community and it will very much be a trial basis for both sides.

This doesn't only apply to Steam. NVIDIA, AMD, and a lot of other driver manufacturers do the same thing. The Linux community is very hard on them too.

We're always watching. Always. In the meantime, fire up a game and chill dude.

I'm a PC guy through and through.. love Linux, love GLP - no intention on fighting either.......that said

Linux for Steam is AWESOME!!

opens us to linux games.....mostly indy and Valve recodes (I'd love to play any source games on linux!).....anyways...

opens up the realm versus windows 8 (the REAL war).....that is what it is. let's be real...DX9 (current consoles)...versus DX 10 and 11 are nothing......11 smokes them all...DX9 is console kiddy shit.....11 is entirely different....

No one wants Win 8 = not even the developers.......they would rather linux, hence Gabe's war to bring it to linux (good thing, an open platform)....

I'm a watercooling overclocker who likes linux and GLP as much....we all win with open source.....period...FUCK WINDOWS8 Gill out (AC no more)
