But i have this sick feeling that they killed it not because there was opposition, but that the opposition was negligible and that they could reintroduce a much heavier bill that would pass without problem.

I'm not sure that has worked on any bills in the past and it should raise hope that more can be done in the future by using the same (non-violent) means.

Understood good observation about Americans but why do you think we earnestly feel like that sometimes. We walk around here and its hard to relate. I do understand that pessimistic vibe that you say we may carry and i do have to admit it that is how we are and we are fighting over here too. But the fact that these things are becoming an issue shows that the powers that be already have a problem with it. Why should something as free as the internet even come to question when it has done so much good already. It is hard to communicate around here the ideas and problems that need to be tackled accurately when the most absurd things are questioned. When im out in the world i influence with a great vibe and i do dislike pessimism but by the looks of things i hope that these things(bills, etc.) soon come to a halt and are accepted so that my pessimism may retreat.

Maybe but for now they still need that annoying warrant to drag your ass in court, and any info collected before that warrant will be inadmissible, good luck obtaining a warrant with proofs you shouldnt have in the first place. They can listen, watch and record. They just cant use any of it in court.

But then they can always kidnap your ass in the middle of the night. I dont think it would be difficult for the CIA to pull off an operation in Canada.

Yep, it took some perseverance and word of mouth, but we proved that we can still band together on serious issues. 150k signatures is no small feat for a country of 35 million. I actually remember there being between 500k and 1 million signatures, but maybe that was for a similar bill.

AFAIK, the US gummint has made cyber-war into a full time operation. No one anywhere is safe from Big Brother listening in. Also, I believe you and I at the bottom of the rung don't really provoke much interest from the PTB. It is peeps who've slithered their way to high levels within gummint and corporations that are monitored. They want to gather evidence to keep them playing ball for the team. Otherwise, their embarrassing activities would be released to the NYT and CNN. If the monitored are found to be gathering evidence to Congress or the justice system, they could be snuffed out. So, the spying system is really all about making the country safe for the high level elites who break the rules routinely. Are Canadians spied on by US agencies? The question should be: "who, on the planet, is not spied upon?" Us bottom feeders are safe but anyone else who's raking it it in in big bunches is not safe and should assume their online activities, cell phone calls, mail, smoke signals, are being watched by a computer which will in turn sound some sort of alarm for a human to investigate. As computers speed up (they're doubling in speed every 18 months, the system can expand to envelope more of the peeps raking it in in smaller bunches.
