Friday’s meteorite which struck Chelyabinsk carried a mass of around 40 tonnes, possibly making it the largest recorded object to hit the Earth since Tunguska. It was around 15 meters across when it entered the atmosphere, according to one expert.

"I'm not aware of anyone who saw this coming," Heiner Klinkrad, head of the European Space Operations Centre in Germany, said
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1546575

The Russian Space bureau gave it's mass as ten tons. So this is just growing and growing. An iron meteorite of forty tons, imagine that! burnit

I'm sure that someone has already said this, but what are the chances that a meteorite would strike in Russia on the same day as the 2012 DA14 flyby, especially with all the talk about how it would be like the Tunguska event if it did hit? There is no way there wasn't someone who saw this coming.

If it was a 300kt explosion we would have some epic video, but we don't.

It seems the Russians blew it into pieces with conventional payload surface to air missiles. I'd imagine that an unconventional warhead inside of one of those missiles carrying a average to low yield nuke could take out an asteroid the size of DA14 with ease.

I do not believe this is possible giving there was no warning.

It would be like hitting a bullet with a bullet, It was 15 meters in diameter and traveling at 40,000 miles per hour a hit would have been visible on the car dash video, but there are no contrails from any anti ballistic defense systems.

There were erlier claims by the Russian military that they shot it down, but these disappeared quickly.

I am beginning to think they wont find any, this may be a smaller version of the Tunguska event, just an air burst.

But it would be cool if they found some.

<snip>

MOSCOW (AFP) - A plunging meteor exploded with a blinding flash above central Russia on Friday, setting off a shockwave that shattered windows and hurt almost 1,000 people in an event unprecedented in modern times.

Experts insisted the meteor's fiery entry into the atmosphere was not linked to the asteroid 2012 DA 14, which later passed about 17,200 miles (27,700 kilometres) above the Earth without incident in an unusually close approach.

They probably knew this one was going to hit so they found one that would pass the same day and get all the telescopes in the world looking in the wrong direction so no one would see the real threat in the other direction.

I don't think they knew if it would hit, where or if it would break up so they feigned ignorance and diverted every ones attention...if it killed thousands they could say "we didn't see it coming" but you can bet they watched it all the way in!

How could a meteorite fragment hitting Chebarkul lake in Russia create a nearly perfect circle in the ice?

[link to www.slate.com]
 Quoting: Tombfly 1577203

When you throw a square stone in a lake does it make a square ripple?

The kinetic energy disperses in a round pattern.

Hope this helps.

In the solid state, chemical bonds are stronger than the kinetic energy of the atoms. The atoms are locked into their crystal lattice positions. Kinetic energy dispersal in solids is much lower. Energy would still radiate similar to seismic waves, but the ice wouldn't fracture in a circle. Does ice have cleavage?

Interesting thing about DA14...it's been slowing down as it gets closer to Earth (went from a consistent 6.3 Km/s to 6.1 km/s) over the last couple of hours...shouldn't this thing be speeding up slightly as it enters Earth's gravitational pull?!?!?
