I've seen several posts tonight talking about seeing fireballs or meteors from across the US - tonight! I've been trying to get on www.meteorscan.com for their live feed, but the screen is frozen on the same shot as when the Russian meteor hit. Anyone else having problems accessing a live feed? I'd like to know if there is abnormal activity tonight.

The multiple bursts would seem to indicate the pieces coming off the the meteor were breaking the sound barrier every couple seconds? Why is there more than one pop?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22556189

I dunno. If the main asteroid broke apart into dozens of pieces, each one traveling many times the speed of sound, wouldn't each one create it's own sonic boom?
It is precisely because it is fashionable for Americans to know no science, even though they may be well educated otherwise, that they so easily fall prey to nonsense. They thus become part of the armies of the night, the purveyors of nitwittery, the retailers of intellectual junk food, the feeders on mental cardboard, for their ignorance keeps them from distinguishing nectar from sewage. — Isaac Asimov

How come no one has found it ironic, that a meteor hit a zinc factory?

Zinc is one of the minerals that is mined from asteroid mining?

Now lets say DA14 had a large deposit of zinc in it, and is in the process of being mined in space or lassoed into orbit around the moon, or earth to be mined closer to earth.

If the Russian meteor was a man made event, you could see how taking out a zinc factory or business competitor would be cornering the market for your newly created asteroid mining company.

As always follow the money.

Rather interesting that Google went on a trip N. Korea, and N. Korea recently is "testing" space rockets.

Not to mention the fact that the REAL stories have been burried by this (US offically reached the debt ceiling today soon to default, G20 meeting, and Supreme court is hearing arguments about Obama forging Government Documents), MSM covered it, and that it plays into the staged bible prophecies set to test the faith of millions.

All of these events are staged, man made, or completely made up for the purpose of furthering there agenda, and/or hiding it from the masses.

As far as the "astronomical odds" that this came in near the time of the touted close pass with da14,

...first of all I ask what was the trajectory?, anything similar to da14?

...and if it was, then I would suggest that it was once loosely bound to to da14 by very subtle gravitational forces, and that something caused it to come apart some months back perhaps.

if that were the case then there could be also more smaller materials coming in at different times and slightly different trajectories, like gravel or sand size materials, or more big stuff too for that matter.

..."The first half hour of information about what happened, it was not due to the fact that the earth is not found any objects falling. All rapid reaction force was sent to the place of the alleged fall, but nothing was found. The civil and military aviation version of the crash denied "- said Acting Emergency Situations of the Chelyabinsk region Yuri Burenko.

According to him, initially, that it flew over the city, not reliably known. "In its search for the object. There were thousands of calls from all over the area that something fell that burns wood that two objects landed on the border with Kazakhstan. All information is checked, "- he said, adding that in the case of items falling from the sky rescuers can establish their position in the first hour, but quickly determine what and where landed, this time failed...
...As told by witnesses, not just a piece of meteorite blazed in the sky over Chelyabinsk - before that, he was faced with the same object, after which the explosion occurred, and was followed by a shock wave...

When you throw a square stone in a lake does it make a square ripple?

The kinetic energy disperses in a round pattern.

Hope this helps.

In the solid state, chemical bonds are stronger than the kinetic energy of the atoms. The atoms are locked into their crystal lattice positions. Kinetic energy dispersal in solids is much lower. Energy would still radiate similar to seismic waves, but the ice wouldn't fracture in a circle. Does ice have cleavage?

The energy is very abruptly deposited at what amounts to a single point in the planet's crust. As in the case of a bomb explosion, the shape of the resulting crater is round: ejecta is thrown equally in all directions regardless of the direction from which the bomb may have arrived."

Typically the case when a bolide strikes a hard surface (ice). Complete disintegration of the impactor they should be looking for fragments not a large object. Probably no easy task in sub zero temperatures under who knows how deep a lake that has recently sedimentary (murky water) disturbed by an impact

07:58 GMT: No meteorite fragments were found at the bottom of Chebarkul Lake, says the Emergencies Ministry. A lack of underwater visibility, as well as a thick – up to 1.5 meters – layer of ooze were cited as the main reasons for failure. Six divers spent three hours searching for solid objects in the mud but finally gave up. Water samples taken from the lake have also shown nothing unusual.

Ummmmm..... What is not unusal about a 1.5 meter layer thick of "ooze"??????
