Why are they all green though? The Cuba / Florida one and the one in Chelyabinsk? Seems like they have the same composition of minerals and metals. Perhaps part of a larger body?
If any foreign minister begins to defend to the death a "peace conference," you can be sure his government has already placed its orders for new battleships and aeroplanes.

A "weird" green slime said in folklore to appear at the same time as meteors hit Earth has been found in a birdlife park in Somerset.

Its appearance has coincided with a meteor strike in Russia and the harmless fly-by of an asteroid at a record distance from Earth last week.

Tony Whitehead, an RSPB spokesman for the South West, added: "Although we don't know what it actually is, similar substances have been described previously.

"In records dating back to the 14th Century it's known variously as star jelly, astral jelly or astromyxin.

"In folklore it is said to be deposited in the wake of meteor showers."

The public are being warned not to touch the mystery substance, and to inform nature reserve staff if they spot any.

theres this from 'the sun' published 18 hours ago.

"A MYSTERY fireball spotted in the sky over the West Country has left stargazers baffled.

The flaming object similar to a meteor that rocked Russia last week was snapped hurtling through the skies by a wildlife photographer."

How does NASA know they have located 95% of a group of objects of an unknown number? That was the mans, the woman had it at 90% and the bulk of her speech sounded like a fool trying to sound intelligent.

This has to be one of the most videoed event in history!

large Youtube playlist of videos of the meteor - up to 274 videos now! :
[link to www.youtube.com (secure)]

lots more info and pics, including pics of meteorites found from it:
[link to meteorites.ru]

The first scholarly paper from it, detailing the trajectory and orbit:

It was unrelated to the 2012 DA14 asteroid flyby on the same day, as crazy as the coincidence is.

A lot of information is going to be learned from this event. The is so much data to research from.

It is truly a historic event.

Re: meteor hits central russia
As a meteorite researcher, meteorite hunter, and collector for decades, after watching several of the numerous videos, I can tell you one significant thing.

This is likely the most documented meteor strike in human history...

point to remember, if any reports begin to come in of human injuries or deaths because of this, it will be the most damaging meteor strike in recorded human history...

if reports begin to come of property damage, just realize how unusual that is. Lots of 'shooting stars' and meteorites coming in all the time, anything that causes property damage is extreme by any measure...

And more is to come in?

 Quoting: hatch battner 16687437

Just a bump for the 4 year anniversary of this event.

As it became clear in the aftermath, with 1,491 people injured, and over 7000 buildings damaged, the Chelyabinsk meteor strike of February 2013 is the most damaging confirmed meteor strike in all of recorded human history. (It's still unclear what caused the Tunguska Event, with competing theories, and there is no accurate record of how many were killed or injured there)

The early pages on this thread are interesting, with people reacting as the first videos came in.

How would GLP react if something much bigger came in, this time not just injuring, but killing people into the thousands or more?...

Chelyabinsk also marked a dramatic uptick in huge fireball events worldwide, as reported to the joint reporting system of the American Meteor Society/International Meteor Organizations joint reporting system.

In the 4 years since Chelyabinsk, there has been 83 huge fireball events worldwide. In the 4 years before Chelyabinsk, there were 10 huge fireball events worldwide.

And there's nothing anyone can do to stop it, for cryin' in the sink!

IN CASE this should happen again another part of the world who knows maybe it could maybe it wont

but lets pretend it does again

after you have watched these videos there is NO WARNING

all you will see is the line in the sky if you are inside you wont see nothing just feel the BOOM...
 Quoting: Z-Punk

chances of that shit hitting you are like 1 in a billion at least...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7756583

Much better chances than one in a billion, as this info from an internet search shows-

"the odds that you, yes you, will be killed by a meteor are much higher than the odds of a lightning strike. These worrisome odds stack up not because of frequent homicidal meteors, but because of the effectiveness of meteors over a certain size. A humanity-ending meteor hits the Earth, according to some calculations, about one every hundred million years...you have a likelihood of being killed by a meteor of one in about 700,000.

You'll notice, as life expectancy increases worldwide, the odds of being killed by a meteor go up significantly. Raising the lifespan of the average human to 80 would make our odds of being killed by a meteor 1 in 625,000, and if we start living to 100, we'll have odds of being killed by
meteors in the one in 500,000 range..."

Comparative odds from various internet sources-

Chance of winning Powerball lottery - 1 in 292 million
Chance of being killed by a vending machine - 1 in 150 million
Chance of being killed in a plane crash - 1 in 11 million
Chance of being killed by lightning - 1 in 10 million
Chance of being killed by a shark - 1 in 3.7 million
Chance of dating a Supermodel - 1 in 880,000
Chance of being killed by a meteor - 1 in 700,000

Good tip if you do ever see a line like that in the sky, move away from windows!

Re: meteor hits central russia
I find this part of the story a bit hard to believe:

"The local newspaper Znak reported the meteorite was intercepted by an air defense unit at the Urzhumka settlement near Chelyabinsk. Quoting a source in the military, it wrote a missile salvo blew the meteorite to pieces at an altitude of 20 kilometers.

Regnum news agency quoted a military source who claimed that the vapor condensation trail of the meteorite speaks to the fact that the meteorite was intercepted by air defenses."
