Sleep well ! On another issue , imagine if that meteorite would strike an ocean , imagine the Tsunami wave and of course , way of-course , Fukushima and dozens more on-shore reactors word-wide . Are we colectively stupid ( lead by our 'scientists' ) ?? Duh !! |

Sleep well ! It's taboo to talk about why neither NORAD nor Russia's S-400 didn't even flinch in sensing this danger coming in . Keep in mind , the meteorite striked near a very large nuclear fuel manufacturing complex that SHOULD have SAMs S-400 guarding ! How about the Patriot SAMs in Poland and Romania ? |

Quoting: Birdi 1404878 The impact crater was at Lake Chebarkul, apart from a nice 6 metre diameter hole in the ice there does not appear to be any sign of a tsunami or even damage to the ice close by. Therefore I doubt there would be even a small tsunami, never mind one that would wipe out coastlines. |

Sleep well ! S-400 range : Operational range 400 km (40N6 missile) 250 km (48N6 missile) 120 km (9M96 missile) The math ( please contribute or adjust ): - far high satellites are in 27,000 Km orbits around Earth and that's WITHIN the range of Radars that can spot centimeter size objects - the meteorite speed was some 40,000 Km/Hr and it exploded at 50 to 80 Km high - therefore Earth had around 20 minutes to respond and lanch a group of S-400s , and to meet the object around 100 Km. high , split it and therefore avoiding that large shock wave . ... even 15 minutes should be MORE than enough --> those people are practicing for such quick responses . So WTH happened ? |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 904314 Canada 02/17/2013 02:24 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This would be a valid question except that.. This meteor entered the atmosphere at 54,000 kilometers per hour. I don't think any missile systems are fast enough to react to something happening at that speed. That's 15,000 m/s, meaning the meteor would have already burned up and exploded by the time the warning systems would have detected it, crunched the numbers and gone beep! And no anti-missile could travel fast enough to intercept this! What we need is a mesh network of sensors surrounding the earth in all directions in a massive globe wider than the orbit of the moon! Like a big net that detects these things, and still has time to send in a signal to a space based anti-asteroid/meteor system that could then have a slight chance of being fast enough to intercept and deflect the incoming! Plus such a thing would be great for space defense against non-earth settlements, in the future. You know, so the mars-humans of the future don't sneak attack us and all! |
