Dead on, dead on. MS needs to open up it's operating structure. Also most of the software is just that bloatware. I reinstalled my Windows 7 64bit on my harddrive because MS updates messed up my BIOS (around the same time Windows 8 was being pushed). So I did what a person helping me from dell told me personally that you don't need MS updates for the operating system, it will work fine. I haven't had trouble for at least 7 months and he told me that it's real easy for MS to put stuff in the update to mess up your system and make you get the next version of the software.

Turn MS updates off. Also I'm surprised that you are still working as an American (assuming) programmer with so much of that business being offshored.

Re: Fuck computer programming as a career
I'm sick and tired of it. I've been programming now for well over a decade and I simply can not write another god damned line of code.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 30981074

I have been programming for over 20 years and love every minute of it. So far I was lucky to work for small, startup companies, or consulting, always doing stuff I haven't done before, always new challenges. The skills do accumulate, so I have become quicker when jumping into new languages, systems and interfaces.

I have done just about anything that's out there, from modem and hard drive firmware (even in machine code for strange, primitive processors), to operating systems, multiprocessor job control systems, specialized libraries for programmers, web filtering (designed and coded Cyber Patrol in the early days of Netscape), Windows, Linux and OSX/iOS high speed networking, servers & clients for variety of protocols from specs & from scratch (such as http, dns, smtp, snmp) peer to peer systems, device drivers, compression programs (for graphics & audio, compressed data bases), GPS servers and clients, smart screen magnifiers for users with poor vision and input methods for motorically handicapped (e.g. Morse code via puffs or blinks or cheek twitches), golfing application for iPhone (e.g. measures slope & distance to hole, suggests club, kind & direction of swing, shows trajectories), remote PC desktop & remote webcams control/view for clients in Java, Javascript, iPhone native code, tele-conferencing system, software & firmware for Data Center switches and routers,...

The translation of required behaviors into algorithmic patterns, then of those into code, has become second nature, it just flows without thinking, like talking or breathing air. Debugging is fun, too, like solving new puzzles, or like detective solving a murder mystery.

The most enjoyableis the initial nurturing of a program from a little seed, laying out classes and data structures, simulating their behaviours in the mental models of the system I am looking to create. If you learn how to do that right, the program grows like a network (a graph with adaptable links, functioning just like human brain), a live being with intelligence of its own unfolding by itself in perfect harmony, like fertilized egg growing into a newborn baby, with my brain acting as its substratum, my fingers as its fingers. Once that phase takes off, it becomes completely effortless on my part. I don't even need to think any more, the network thinks it through better than I ever could, it knows exactly what it needs, where it should go, and it merely "asks" me what to do next.

Go find a fortune 50 company. Read a bit about Project Management or System Engineering IT work, and make yourself over $100K a year with your background in programming. That simple.

Or find a few good contracting houses to hire you into these fortune firms - in a "right to hire" position.

Coding sux - but you chose that profession because you like to solve puzzles. There are other positions out there that you can utilize your God given talent. Good luck to you.

I'm sick and tired of it. I've been programming now for well over a decade and I simply can not write another god damned line of code. It's the same shit over and over again. Make it faster, make it cheaper, make it faster, make it cheaper is all you fucking hear at work and all you see in job postings.

Why in the fuck does any of it matter? Let's run on a treadmill our entire lives so people can have a fucking faster smartphone. Fuck them.

Let's spend hundreds of billions of dollars so algorithms can trade a few microseconds faster. Fuck it.

Let's waste countless man years so the corners of windows are curved and semi-transparent because that shit really matters. Fuck it all.

Let's rewrite the same website infrastrucure in a the latest fad language every couple of years so we all can pretend to be busy bees. Fuck that.

Is there any way out of this treadmill of a life? I highly doubt it. Mankind won't stop in this path to exponential insanity until we are left with nothing but a smouldering pile of ruins we once called civilization.

People can barely keep up with their workload at the office and all the chores at home yet every day you get to work and it's MOAR MOAR MOAR.

And you know what? It's the 0.1% at the top that are *demanding* that every single thing below them cut costs, increase efficiency all so they can see a little MOAR money that they did the month before. Can they even spend the money they make? No, but they still need MOAR and it will come out of your SOUL!

She programs for a medical device group here in San Diego.
She hates it and will quit this year after we are out of debt.

I have been doing this a seriously long time. I have tried everything suggested. I have worked with great minds on cool projects, consulted, schooling, own business, etc.

I am proficient in at least a dozen languages. Sure it's cool learning a new language or using a new framework but really it's all the same shit and has been for years... loops, conditions, functions, yada, yada... I used to enjoy the feeling of getting it all to come together. That exact moment you realize the fruits of your labor! Great feeling and kept me coming back but lately for me that has faded too.

I have built too many programs, websites, phone apps, databases, etc. that have come and gone. It's crazy when I think of some of the money people invest in something that is not even tangible only to have it disappear in a few years and either die or be replaced with a new updated version.

It's a great field for fresh young minds but my mind is not so young and fresh anymore. I am really at the point in my life where I would rather work a stress free senseless job with more free time and focus more on my friends and family...

I felt that way about writing computer user manuals until I got laid off a decade ago and had to do temp office work for 20% of my former pay. It was still boring except that managers were more stupid and it was really difficult to pay for housing, fuel, food, and fun all at the same time. Be grateful, OP. To all you programmers.....

There is a huge need for an electronic medical record that is worth a crap. I am a family practice doctor that has worked with 3 major electronic medical records, allscripts, misys and meditech. They are all very lacking in user friendliness and overall usability. Someone is going to write an emr that will sweep the market. If I had a good programmer that I could trust, we could develop and emr and get filthy stinking rich and get off the treadmill.

Strange email for a doctor. Strange message board for one as well.

Anyway, I may do some research, but getting any given doctor to part with whatever their sales reps push at them, especially if it involves retraining staff, is a big wall to knock down. I agree their systems are stupid and designed for the 1980s, but not even doctor's offices like change.

 Quoting: Strongman Shelford

I have done well and at points in my life been what you would call "rich". Thing is, those are the most miserable times of my life. I spent so many years chasing that to only realize it ends at a DEAD END. For me the answer is not there.

Sure it makes life easier to have gas in the tank and not worry about the every day costs of life but as far as finding happiness in money, for me it's not there.

I have some hard decisions to make and have started to think and plan about some of them. Don't get me wrong, at one time I loved programming and it's still fun sometimes dabbling with no time frames but I am just really burnt on computers. I don;t do much anymore other than work or stop by here and check a few posts.

I started getting back into nature more last year. Did more hiking, fishing, camping, etc. That's what I always did growing up. My cousins and I grew up in the woods. It's always been my sanctuary. I think it's time for me to return to the sanctuary!

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25898128

You make an excellent point. Computers from 10 years ago were just as capable of doing what a home user needed them to do as they are today. And yet your average home computer user has probably replaced that computer 4-5 times since and only because the OS's have decided to add bloat, eye candy and other completely useless rubbish to "enhance our computing experience", as if using a tool was supposed to be the end result rather than simply a method of achieving a goal.

Then again, there's industries like trading where hardware is upgraded as soon as it's released to simply keep up with the competition. Microseconds become all that matters.

And there's really no middle ground either. It's either work on the industrial side of things where more speed is king, and your entire life will be spent ensuring that we can run ridiculous simulations that help no one but the elite, or you can work on the consumer side of thing where your job will be to add bloat after bloat until the 1M line codebase is simply unmaintanable. Then it's time for a re-write!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 30981074

To be fair , Windows has a lot of bloat. Also, most programs not written under the K.I.S.S. principle or the Unix principle (most programs) are bloated, inefficient and slow.

Also, Java is a terrible language and fuck everyone who uses it.

I taught myself programming about 26 years ago. I'm still doing it. I enjoy my personal projects, but hate working for others. Website design is the worst. I've had enough clients go to hell the moment they pipe up like "My (wife/daughter/niece) took a class in web design, and she thinks.."

A bad day for me is when someone asks me to generate a nonsensical report. Other than that, most of my job is automated, they just don't know it. :-D
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 34496640

Sounds very familiar.

I'm a semi-retired web developer, and there have been times I removed my business link from a site because I was ashamed of what the client made me do for them. They're also quick to vent their spleen on you for every little thing that goes wrong, even when you prove that it was their own fault for not using the software as they made you design it to work. I had to add a disclaimer to my contract that their local ISP issues are not my fault or responsibility.

Yeah, the automation... I back up whole site databases with one click.

Come on guy, I'm just braggin bout my skill I refused to sell to the system pimps. I enjoyed making these things even though in todays standards, they are nothing unless wrapped in a shocking spectacle of graphics and animation.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 18237036

But you are absolutely correct. Computers haven't done anything new or exciting for years now. IE6 and HTML3 or whatever it was at the time vs today's various standards has taken literal man millenia of labor on our part and what do we have to show for it except fancy eye candy wrapped around everything?

It's almost like an entire generation has been tricked into wasting their youthful energy on a completely dead end "skill" that is of absolutely no use to anything but the system itself. Funny, that.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 30981074

HTML 5 and css3 are actually pretty exciting, some of the sites being done with them are pretty impressive and swift. Also, the whole market knows the desktop and the console are dead..., all the progress is being made in tablets. I do graphic design and ux, my main job is probably finding new clients.. but I admit I outsource the dev work to India. I used to work in the video game industry as a producer, i do admit i felt bad for some of the programmers, but the higher up guys seemed to be livingpretty large, and seemed happy. Peace, and good luck!

The click is mostly for the clients so they can have their own copy of the backups. I like redundancy; helps me sleep better at night.

Re: Fuck computer programming as a career
Come on guy, I'm just braggin bout my skill I refused to sell to the system pimps. I enjoyed making these things even though in todays standards, they are nothing unless wrapped in a shocking spectacle of graphics and animation.

Everything I do now is responsive, for that reason. Only time I need to do a media query is if the primary nav menu is long and needs to become a dropdown on smartphones. Now that I've pretty much settled on a grid, a new site takes surprisingly little time and headache to launch.

Re: Fuck computer programming as a career
this industry knows how to reinvent itself - perhaps that's a good thing because it keeps churning out software and development languages/platform which cost an arm and a leg.

It;s good for you to cash in new found skills.. SAP consultant - $1000/day !!

Remember the good old days where PowerBuilder was your passport to $$$.. then it quickly disappeared. A few years later came Delphi, VB and C++,,, recently every shop wants to roll out Java - not sure where Java is today? Oracle is probbaly going to kill it along with mySQL. lol.

Re: Fuck computer programming as a career
To all you programmers.....

There is a huge need for an electronic medical record that is worth a crap. I am a family practice doctor that has worked with 3 major electronic medical records, allscripts, misys and meditech. They are all very lacking in user friendliness and overall usability. Someone is going to write an emr that will sweep the market. If I had a good programmer that I could trust, we could develop and emr and get filthy stinking rich and get off the treadmill.

Email me if you have experience and are interested.

If anyone takes this one, I have advice for you, get liability insurance up the wazoo for when it is hacked by nefarious assholes wanting to expose the health records of someone who is 'famous'. Notice I said when.

Get a good fucking lawyer to help you because the riches you earn will be sucked out of your pocket just as fast.

There is a huge market for privacy on the web, especially for common folk who want to keep big bro from looking at their shit.

Kim Dot Com's new start up is but one example. The new app Silent Circle is another.

The market for this is unlimited.

Unfortunately most of these businesses would be a govt target so best be offshore.

I agree - the challenges / new things, are fun. The repetition is not.

My favorite is when a client that has used my services in the past, bitches about the price on another job, and then gets a competitor to do it and an fucks it up.

Then they come back to me. Price is doubled, at minimum, to fix shit. I don't pretend to be the best but I am meticulous in making sure it works before delivery. I never 'rush' a job. I leave that to others.

From reading the posts on here, I am very happy to have never entered a corporate mind slavery ring. I feel for you guys.
