Re: Fuck computer programming as a career
What the fuck? If you've been programming for so long, odds are you are quite competent. You bitch and moan, and the thought NEVER crossed your mind to program an application for yourself that you yourself sell?

START YOUR OWN BUSINESS FOR FUCK SAKE!! Quit having the slave mentality and work for yourself. I'll bet there are thousands of programs/applications you can make right now that will sell like hotcakes.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1556732

You're still a slave. Do you really think being 1099 or W2 or "self-employed" really matters all that much? I've done all of the above. Sure, being 1099 means you have slightly more leeway in your work, but you still have to go to the office every day.

Starting your own business to get away from slavery is a joke when in reality you end up in the same exact position. The whole point to this thread is NO ONE NEEDS any of this malarkey. So, sure, I'd "own" my own business, which in return would own me and all my time. I'd be in the exact same spot.

It's one thing to work for oneself when the product one is creating is consumable by oneself, and the extra can be sold. It's another when the only thing you create has an actual intrinisic value of $0.00. Then, you're once again back to producing shit you hate for people you wouldn't piss on to put out a fire. And you will only be paid so long as you keep producing MOAR.

Anyway, all the world needs is another fucking iPhone App to text friends with... LOL.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 30981074

So...

what is your solution....just curl up and die under a rock??
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 32538141

Getting our of computer programming completely, I think.

I'm not opposed to self-employment, but it has to be legitimate self-employment and not just a "1099 vs W2 but you're still spending every day whoring your brain for the man" thing.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 30981074

Yes

unless it has your own name on it

it isn't worth it

do you realize

if you open up your own business and it expands and lasting clients

are created

and you LLC it (incorporate it)

you can sell it for a lot of money

over time

as a franchise or sell it off to someone else wanting a running business

this is worth something

if you are broke- I beg you - switch to asp.net/c# and move to the east coast....

seriously -

My recruiter is looking for some asp.net/C# people - $60 hourly - minimum
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24208912

Telling this to a Linux C++ programmer makes me want to puke. C# is absolute hell to develop in. asp.net is a horrible joke meant to induce suicide in humanity. Seriously, if I hate Linux programming, becoming a microsoft weenie would be even worse.

Ive worked in Enterprise for years---

Ive contracted on projects that were projected to be completed in a year and two twice as long-

and then if you work in government - even better - it takes them 5 times as long to complete a project...

government is laid back - a bit boring - but you never have to worry about unrealistic deadlines...

I program, love it, only because I write programs to give me remote access to the pc, you can write exploits and sell them for tons of cash, stop writing mundane bs, and start writing exploits, if I knew how to program in machine language I would, only because it would help my exploits exploit better.

Yup, kinda feel this way as well -- and I think this statement explains best how most creeps we work for think of us: CODE PRELOAD MOVEABLE DISCARDABLE.

And it's not just programming it's across the board when it comes to the computer field in general. It also amazes me to see how much idiots have control of things. Time after time in my years in the computer industry -- I have seen idiots placed in charge of things, or have power over things when they had little or no understanding of what they were dealing with.

As well, the general attitude is more like "do it cause I said so" -- rather than "do it because this will make things better."

When I realized even though I learned coding vb6 and came to the conclusion I was not going to work for somebody to steal my work, I did a bunch of program codes, created gui in photoshop and compiled the exe.

I created a website and gave these nifty little pograms away for free to get my work out there for a time when I would code a sellable program.

One of the programs was I coded a complete web browser unlike anything out at the time for download. I used this browser for a class project demonstration to the class and got an A for the effort.

I was going to further develop this for intra-net usage so corporations would have a branded corporate browser for internal use.

I still use some of those programs I coded and created graphics for. One is a program called DNS server that tells you when your on the internet what dns servers are connected to your pc. It had functions to clear dns and ipconfig other functions to clean up the pc. I also built a cookie buster to clean cookies and stuff off the pc.

You coders don't have a clue to what your skill is worth in the world of applications to the pc user, when you build programs by your deep desire to pay yourself for your work..

They claim they want it faster and cheaper, they just want it bloated and slower so hardware sales will go up.

Imagine the speed we could have today if we optimized to the 80 and 90s standards when hardware was uber weak.

Re: Fuck computer programming as a career
I'm sick and tired of it. I've been programming now for well over a decade and I simply can not write another god damned line of code. It's the same shit over and over again. Make it faster, make it cheaper, make it faster, make it cheaper is all you fucking hear at work and all you see in job postings.

Why in the fuck does any of it matter? Let's run on a treadmill our entire lives so people can have a fucking faster smartphone. Fuck them.

Let's spend hundreds of billions of dollars so algorithms can trade a few microseconds faster. Fuck it.

Let's waste countless man years so the corners of windows are curved and semi-transparent because that shit really matters. Fuck it all.

Let's rewrite the same website infrastrucure in a the latest fad language every couple of years so we all can pretend to be busy bees. Fuck that.

Is there any way out of this treadmill of a life? I highly doubt it. Mankind won't stop in this path to exponential insanity until we are left with nothing but a smouldering pile of ruins we once called civilization.

People can barely keep up with their workload at the office and all the chores at home yet every day you get to work and it's MOAR MOAR MOAR.

And you know what? It's the 0.1% at the top that are *demanding* that every single thing below them cut costs, increase efficiency all so they can see a little MOAR money that they did the month before. Can they even spend the money they make? No, but they still need MOAR and it will come out of your SOUL!

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 380553

I don't want to scare you, but I said that at 25. Now I'm in my mid 30's and my resume screams "computer programmer".

Get out while you still can and get some other kind of experience you can use to be marketable. I wish (and still might) try and get on at a local machine shop or some such. Learn a skill like how to actually make things.

Maybe start a 3d printing business.

How was the switch over to the IT side for you? It's another idea I've been pondering. Instead of throwing everything away, maybe just switching over to the admin side of things would work for me. But, I'm worried that the admin side of things would be even worse in the boredorm department. However, I can imagine it would make up for it in its lower overall anxiety levels. Fighting fires is one thing. Constantly fighting a compiler and a debugging environment 8 hours/day is quite worse.

I guess programming might be a never ending fast job, while adminning might be more like sporadic running...

Have another field of expertise to lean on. I do programming and I do another profession.

Works great. When I get sick of one, I can do the other.

Also when someone wants it cheaper I say here is my price, take it or leave it. They know I do good work so they pay most times.

I have not been without work since 1999 and I dictate the price to everyone.

Fuck them.

But you are absolutely correct. Computers haven't done anything new or exciting for years now. IE6 and HTML3 or whatever it was at the time vs today's various standards has taken literal man millenia of labor on our part and what do we have to show for it except fancy eye candy wrapped around everything?

It's almost like an entire generation has been tricked into wasting their youthful energy on a completely dead end "skill" that is of absolutely no use to anything but the system itself. Funny, that.
