Why don't you programmer guys team up write an Algo for /ES rapings, I'm sure people on here would invest.

It's not so easy. You need quite literally millions just for colocation costs. Then you need more millions to buy the rights to exchange membership so you can get the same rates as the other HFT firms. Then you need a few more million to sink into trading accounts for collateral.

Im sure you can raise money if you write a good algo to finish up with putting servers on the same floor as the nyse lol.

Only thing never spoken about is the algos rate of return. Im assuming its probably like shitty mutual funds.

I've been a developer for right at 20 years (this May), and I agree totally.

The pace of change, the deadlines, dysfunctional corporations, and for the past few years daily stand up meetings - what did you do yeasterday, what are you going to do today, do you have any impediments? Ad nauseum.

Fuck it. I'm DONE with it.

At 43 I'm changing careers to nursing. I've heard there's a lot of burn-out there too, but I've always wanted to be a nurse. I almost went into nursing when I (mistakenly) chose CS as a major.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8397139

Im going for nursing now almost went for IT. There is a high burn out rate at hospitals. You can do home care where the nurses I spoke to enjoy it alot, they make their own hours.

If you continue with advanced degrees you can do anesthesia or practice like a dr.

The only way to become successful and happy with it is to solve your issues.

What is your issue right now? Faster and cheaper.

Why haven't you designed a framework to make things faster and cheaper, with absolute ease, tailored specifically to the types of projects and style of code you use?

I'm a programmer by profession, and ever since I did that, I've coded about 75% less, and made about 45% more money.

Don't blame the profession -- blame your ability to overcome your obstacles and perform the steps necessary to get out of hell.

I get the feeling that you're burnt out, and have probably written hundreds of thousands of lines more than you actually needed to.

I've been there. Try getting yourself out of the burnout, taking some stress reduction steps, and then going into it again with the fresh mindset of creating the above mentioned framework.

If you make your tools, then you can control the difficulty and amount of work necessary.

Whatever you do -- in this industry its VITAL to think outside of the box in heated situations.

I cannot even tell you how many I have met the have NO EFFING CLUE WTF they were doing.

They got there purely because of who they knew....or blew. (literally in a few cases)

Re: Fuck computer programming as a career
Oh, and by the way...

The way out of the "treadmill" is to take what you've learned, and start hiring and coaching/managing others.

Save up a bit of money, and try doing some "freelancer management" on the side. Once you learn how to get the projects (not that difficult), you can coordinate with another programmer to get it done at a lower fraction of the project budget.

This does three things:

1) Allows you to help others, by providing DESERVING people with programming work

2) Gives you more freedom and control with your projects and how they are implemented

3) Once you get good with it, you can probably kiss your regular job good bye.

If you don't invest in yourself, there's no way in hell you're going to find the end of that treadmill man. Literally every job will be the same with your mindset. It sounds like what you really long for is to become involved in the decision making process, and decide where your time is best spent.

Once again, use the knowledge from your 10+ years, and start investing it in YOU, not just the company you work for.

The issue you are describing is a mindset - some have this specific mindset and some don't. Do what it takes to follow your heart man -- life will end up how YOU paint it, but only when you decide it so.

After all -- it was indeed you in the beginning that decided to work for another company, and accepted all of these resulting issues. Now what you need to do for yourself is give yourself an opporunity and room to change your surroundings.

Make a decision and do it now. Don't wait 5 years until you've blown your gasket even further. Quit wasting your time and go for what you want man - I believe in you.

Now it is you that must believe in you.

10 yrs ago i made the same decision. went from making almost 100 bucks an hour to zero. Tried to start a business but that did not work out. Now on food stamps, section 8, living on minimum wage (just) - wondering when the economy drops out the bottom if my family will survive. Still, trying to forge a new path forward.

I hated the corporations I worked for. And I hated the work. But I miss having a nice home, vacations and such. It sucks to be so broke that we even scrape pennies to buy a couple rolls of toilet paper.

Re: Fuck computer programming as a career
What the fuck? If you've been programming for so long, odds are you are quite competent. You bitch and moan, and the thought NEVER crossed your mind to program an application for yourself that you yourself sell?

START YOUR OWN BUSINESS FOR FUCK SAKE!! Quit having the slave mentality and work for yourself. I'll bet there are thousands of programs/applications you can make right now that will sell like hotcakes.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1556732

You're still a slave. Do you really think being 1099 or W2 or "self-employed" really matters all that much? I've done all of the above. Sure, being 1099 means you have slightly more leeway in your work, but you still have to go to the office every day.

Starting your own business to get away from slavery is a joke when in reality you end up in the same exact position. The whole point to this thread is NO ONE NEEDS any of this malarkey. So, sure, I'd "own" my own business, which in return would own me and all my time. I'd be in the exact same spot.

It's one thing to work for oneself when the product one is creating is consumable by oneself, and the extra can be sold. It's another when the only thing you create has an actual intrinisic value of $0.00. Then, you're once again back to producing shit you hate for people you wouldn't piss on to put out a fire. And you will only be paid so long as you keep producing MOAR.

Anyway, all the world needs is another fucking iPhone App to text friends with... LOL.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 30981074

I'll tell you what bud. I wake up when I desire, I have my coffee, check GLP / facebook. I cook my breakfast while briefing myself on the tasks needed for the day.

Then after breakfast, I do some coding, followed by more GLP/Facebook. Some days I decide 'I need a break. I'll work a little harder tomorrow instead'.

Do I still work for my money? Yes.

But don't even DARE say that it's not MUCH better than working in an office. You sound like the type that hasn't even TRIED, and so how could you judge it?

Re: Fuck computer programming as a career
Lets keep in mind that happy & successful programmers have instead viewed this thread's obstacle as "overcomable", and by thinking outside the box and questioning their inability, have become highly successful and most often with a paycheque to match.

Most of these highly successful programmers don't have to drop a finger if they don't want, because many of them are either company owners or project managers.

Your challenge is to figure out a way to take care of your obstacles, which in this case would be meeting and even exceeding your employers demands.

You need to start learning more - I can tell. The reason I can tell is because you appear to think you're out of options, but I can think of at least a dozen ways out of your situation.

Re: Fuck computer programming as a career
Yup, kinda feel this way as well -- and I think this statement explains best how most creeps we work for think of us: CODE PRELOAD MOVEABLE DISCARDABLE.

And it's not just programming it's across the board when it comes to the computer field in general. It also amazes me to see how much idiots have control of things. Time after time in my years in the computer industry -- I have seen idiots placed in charge of things, or have power over things when they had little or no understanding of what they were dealing with.

As well, the general attitude is more like "do it cause I said so" -- rather than "do it because this will make things better."
 Quoting: kingbirdfivezero

If you let yourself be discardable, you will be.

Like in every single profession known to man (except maybe politics), if you do the bare minimum to get the job done, the employer is going to give a bare minimum fuck about you.

Why would it be any different?

You need to make yourself irreplaceable. That isn't your employer's job. Just putting time in means nothing. And yes, you can do it by being an absolute whore (the easy way), or you can do it the smart way by mastering an idea that they can't live without. You can spend a year digging a foundation for a house by hand, or you can do the smart thing and do it by tractor.

Expand your beliefs.

And by the way -- not all programming bosses are dicks. However, if you think like that I can garuntee you'll never be one.

Why? Because why would you want to be something you believe to be bad in a black and white fashion?

That's like whining that you don't have money, but then going and saying that people with money are greedy assholes. Then why would you ever have money? Your belief system is self limiting as you can see.

When you work smart -- you end up working for yourself, even when you're employed. Why? Because employers do what they can to keep people that work smart.

It's a profession that requires intelligence, but that don't get "programming intelligence" blind you from your massive room for improvement.

Re: Fuck computer programming as a career
I can tell some of you guys are light years ahead of my skill level in coding. I will say this though, I have a goal with focus and its not to do work for some one else to make money off me.

I have a little program I tossed together and made graphics for. The code is so simple I have to laugh. I laugh because this little program has potential to draw profit.

You see, thinking on a corporate level as a team player or do whats expected of one so one does not get fired, is not in my realm of things I wanna do.

My hats off to you smart guys and gals who code infinite lines for a pay check, I could not go there as you have.

Thats why I remain a small insignificant coder putting together little apps for free with the big one to follow for profit.

Ya know, instead of burning out from corporate demands, think of yourself and what can you do for that person in the mirror.

I just pulled out my little executable DNS server program that needs no install and my brains already thinking of developing that simple little thing into something bigger, broader, and integrated into a new revelation of color and animations.

My other completed project is ready to test on the windowz platform. With some tweaks I have in mind, I think its gonna be a winner.

There are some GREAT ideas that fail, yes. But I'm willing to guarantee that in at least 95% of those businesses that failed, there were some stupid decisions made.

You need to do more than just decide to start the business. You need to plan it properly. You need to know what to expect. You also need something to keep you going while you're building your business.

Quitting your job and therefore throwing away your income, and then deciding your business will replace that income off the bat is a common mistake that people make for some reason. Obviously you wan't to do some test-running before going full on into it. Never throw away your income without lining up your next income. I can not for the life of me see why people do this (even I did this, long ago, and failed). I only ended up succeeding once I realized that I cant just put all of my eggs into an unknown basket.

Profits are a GOAL, not a LAW. The failures that you are describing have a lot more to do with gambling, and a lot less to do with actual business being done (which is why they fail).

If you can program, have an internet connection, and you're making no money / collecting food stamps, you're a fool. Get off your ass and do some freelance work. Go over to vworker and rentacoder and get yourself some projects, asap.

A good programmer can researh a problem, find potential solutions, compare the pros and cons of each solution (including rolling ones own) and implement a system that conforms to the specs.

But instead they have you solve stupid riddles. It's like Alice in Wonderland.

Also, what I posted above was not to discredit the honesty of the attempts. It was to discredit how the honesty came from being naive. Don't expect it to just work. Put the thought in and prove to yourself it would work before doing it.

Trial runs. In many businesses, you don't have to go FULL-ON into it right off the bat to make some money with it. Testing it out before going full time also gives you an opportunity to see what kind of obstacles and issues will come up when you go into business full time.

Why would they hire someone that doesn't know those things and can do the job over someone that does, and can do the job? Sounds like it's time to open up those books again so that you can present yourself as a professional that knows what hes doing, like successful applicants would.

The issue with our work is that most of us don't lift even a single fucking finger to make our lives better. You got to be your own best friend too man -- you can't just be your bosses.

Many of us don't even f**king eat right or excersize, let alone try to make our jobs easier. You reap what you sow, and in most cases these days, people are complaining about not reaping what they didn't sow.

Yes, you can blame your bosses. But what good does that do? The only good thing about this thread are the posts giving you guys advice to get out of your mindsets.

Take responsibility and lead the way to the path you desire. Quit making it seem like its not your responsibility to do so, and instead of complaining, spend your energy fixing your complaints.

Can you fix everything about your job? No. But I'll bet you can make it MUCH easier by thinking about it differently.
