Using your super powers for good not evil. Think of yourself as the Masked Avenger, taking down the systemic evil, one line of code at a time. Ca DMV for example, need their stuff erased. |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 30981074 United States 02/15/2013 02:45 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | They claim they want it faster and cheaper, they just want it bloated and slower so hardware sales will go up. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25898128 Imagine the speed we could have today if we optimized to the 80 and 90s standards when hardware was uber weak. You make an excellent point. Computers from 10 years ago were just as capable of doing what a home user needed them to do as they are today. And yet your average home computer user has probably replaced that computer 4-5 times since and only because the OS's have decided to add bloat, eye candy and other completely useless rubbish to "enhance our computing experience", as if using a tool was supposed to be the end result rather than simply a method of achieving a goal. Then again, there's industries like trading where hardware is upgraded as soon as it's released to simply keep up with the competition. Microseconds become all that matters. And there's really no middle ground either. It's either work on the industrial side of things where more speed is king, and your entire life will be spent ensuring that we can run ridiculous simulations that help no one but the elite, or you can work on the consumer side of thing where your job will be to add bloat after bloat until the 1M line codebase is simply unmaintanable. Then it's time for a re-write! |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 34409935 Germany 02/15/2013 02:51 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | You got it... I once was a programmer too and hated it. It's like prostituting you brain power for irrelevant shit. Worst were the debugging sessions: Looking for countless hours for a tiny error in Python code. At the end of such a day I always had the feeling of total exhaustion without really having done anything worthwhile. And as a programmer, you never get valued for what you make the code do. But it's guaranteed some computer-dense boss bitches about what the code yet cannot do. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 32538141 United States 02/15/2013 02:52 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'm sick and tired of it. I've been programming now for well over a decade and I simply can not write another god damned line of code. It's the same shit over and over again. Make it faster, make it cheaper, make it faster, make it cheaper is all you fucking hear at work and all you see in job postings. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 30981074 Why in the fuck does any of it matter? Let's run on a treadmill our entire lives so people can have a fucking faster smartphone. Fuck them. Let's spend hundreds of billions of dollars so algorithms can trade a few microseconds faster. Fuck it. Let's waste countless man years so the corners of windows are curved and semi-transparent because that shit really matters. Fuck it all. Let's rewrite the same website infrastrucure in a the latest fad language every couple of years so we all can pretend to be busy bees. Fuck that. Is there any way out of this treadmill of a life? I highly doubt it. Mankind won't stop in this path to exponential insanity until we are left with nothing but a smouldering pile of ruins we once called civilization. People can barely keep up with their workload at the office and all the chores at home yet every day you get to work and it's MOAR MOAR MOAR. And you know what? It's the 0.1% at the top that are *demanding* that every single thing below them cut costs, increase efficiency all so they can see a little MOAR money that they did the month before. Can they even spend the money they make? No, but they still need MOAR and it will come out of your SOUL! Burn out is a bitch I have been there. I just tossed up my hands one day and said; no more. It was a different career field but I said the same things... My salary kept going down while my job expectations grew and grew to where I could no longer handle it. I was a RN at night. It was horrid at the end I had 8 and 9 patients; little help I worried about my license on the line if I should not be able to sufficiently clone myself one night.... When I started the job it was ok but it became a nightmare after employee cutbacks and dollar cutbacks The rich fuckers who worked in the nice offices and never got their hands dirty decided they were too poor and needed more income for themselves and wanted to increase profits so, the workers who went out onto bloody trenches every night got less and less I threw up my hands one night and walked away from it the next day after my last horrid shift and never went back this is my story You might want to do the same!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Quit complaining OP... User ID: 34188316 United States 02/15/2013 02:54 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | ...and do something about it. I was a programmer for 20 years. I made a choice to take a different path after coming to the same conclusions as you have. That was 9 years ago, and I now live a much more agrarian lifestyle centered around things that actually mean something and that make a difference. You're absolutely right about what you have observed...but remember that you are in control. Your salary is a chain around your neck. Learn to live a different way, be happier, and enjoy life for a change. |

Here's some options based on your 10 years of industry experience. 1. Barrista (good job, it's warm in coffee shops) 2. Park Labourer 3. Snow Shoveler (outside fresh air, seasonal) 4. Plant Trees (if you're fit and go for it all spring, summer & fall, you can make enough to sit on a beach all winter long) 5. Criminal I think that pretty much covers it. If you have this much experience I would be researching what you need to do to work for yourself doing contract jobs you would be surprised I bet at how much work there is out there for independent contractors in that field If you know a particular code really well.... write a book on it Like '***** for dummies.... |
