Told them that they need to re-write the entire app for 100K minimum. They balked of course. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 34399218 Original programmer could do it for cheaper, I know, but he refuses to touch it. That is a warning flag for this old dude! First rule of programming: In the end the code will always have taken at least 3 times the programming hours you originally thought you'd need. So either ask for 300k or spare yourself the hassle... Oh I did. I have been burned one time too many and learned my lesson a long time ago. |

If you have this much experience I would be researching what you need to do to work for yourself doing contract jobs you would be surprised I bet at how much work there is out there for independent contractors in that field If you know a particular code really well.... write a book on it Like '***** for dummies.... Computer programmer 'outsourced job to China' A US computer programmer has been allegedly caught spending thousands of dollars to outsource his own job to a company in China. The software developer, who is in his 40s, is said to have paid a Chinese firm a fifth of his six-figure salary to do his job for him while he spent his working days surfing the internet. [link to www.telegraph.co.uk] HaHaHa that is fucking hilarious... sounds like a sub-plot of a farrelly brothers movie! I am in business for myself and outsource to foreigners all of the time. Sending it to China pretty much guarantees a back door. When I do it, I only hand out small tasks of an overall larger project. I then review each line of code. Then I put it together. Quicker turnaround and more money in my pocket with less stress. The guy in this example was lazy and deserved to get burned. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 34399218 Canada 02/23/2013 11:27 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Screw programming. I originally started off going to school for programming and found out real fast that I would not do that for a living. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 380553 same here, but i'm still stuck paying back college loans. what a waste Programming school? BUWHAHAHAHAH. Taught by fuckups who could not do the job. If you pay for training, forget about it. You will learn more on your own. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1382145 United States 02/23/2013 11:51 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | One possible solution for programmers is to leave the software development side and go into the industrial side. The industrial automation industry is always looking for talent, and it can be more rewarding when your code makes something move, light up, and do actual work. Much like development, you'll have to learn new obscure languages and equipment. However, once you have enough specialized knowledge and background, you can strike out on your own as a consultant or service provider, and charge the shit out of companies who are using legacy equipment only you know about. I see it every day from the other side of the table. It's not easy, and it's not for everyone, but it is an option for those burnt out in their current programming profession. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 31971902 Canada 03/08/2013 01:47 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Time to revive this thread. FUCK computer programming is right! Sweat shops for yuppies! I have worked for myself, worked for small firms, and large corporations. Working for myself, they never leave you alone. They want you to be a fucking mind reader and when you invoice them for your billable hours they balk and say well I didn't think when I told you to change/add/fix it, that it would cost more. blah blah blah. Fuck off! Small firms expect you to work 80 hours per week for a steady pay worth 40 hours per week. FUCK them and their rah rah, small startup requires sacrifice for the team to succeed. Our success is your success - oh go fuck yourself you egotisical cocksucker! Then the large sweat shops. You really are a fucking number. They just want you to meet that fucking deadline whether it works or not. They don't care. FUCK COMPUTER PROGRAMMING! You fuckers threaten me with using the online programming factory farms in India. Saying that I can be replaced by a guy with a PhD in Computer Science to do your work for $10 per hour. Have fun with the language barrier and trying to figure out their code. Also when they had you to their email spam list and embed something malicious in your code, I will be thinking of you laughing my fucking ass off. Since I got out and started my own heath food and natural supplements business, I have never looked back. I barely work and have my peace of mind back. YEAH! FUCK THE CLIENTS FUCK THE BOSSES FUCK THE FOREIGN FACTORY FARMS FUCK COMPUTER PROGRAMMING! WOW. Now I feel much better! |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 6788397 Canada 03/08/2013 02:03 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'm sick and tired of it. I've been programming now for well over a decade and I simply can not write another god damned line of code. It's the same shit over and over again. Make it faster, make it cheaper, make it faster, make it cheaper is all you fucking hear at work and all you see in job postings. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 30981074 Why in the fuck does any of it matter? Let's run on a treadmill our entire lives so people can have a fucking faster smartphone. Fuck them. Let's spend hundreds of billions of dollars so algorithms can trade a few microseconds faster. Fuck it. Let's waste countless man years so the corners of windows are curved and semi-transparent because that shit really matters. Fuck it all. Let's rewrite the same website infrastrucure in a the latest fad language every couple of years so we all can pretend to be busy bees. Fuck that. Is there any way out of this treadmill of a life? I highly doubt it. Mankind won't stop in this path to exponential insanity until we are left with nothing but a smouldering pile of ruins we once called civilization. People can barely keep up with their workload at the office and all the chores at home yet every day you get to work and it's MOAR MOAR MOAR. And you know what? It's the 0.1% at the top that are *demanding* that every single thing below them cut costs, increase efficiency all so they can see a little MOAR money that they did the month before. Can they even spend the money they make? No, but they still need MOAR and it will come out of your SOUL! Your problem is not programming, its the corporate software industry. Its sucking your creative juices out of you. Just tell them fuck off, and go out on your own, and start your own software project. Be free, be creative. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25898128 Imagine the speed we could have today if we optimized to the 80 and 90s standards when hardware was uber weak. As a developer who abides by the Ethical code for programmers mine does. I refuse to push crap code out the door. All of mine is standardized optimized and strives to not cause harm. For me it is an art form that must be practiced. Good code is readable (mutable), efficient (maintainable), pleasing to the eye when both executed and read (mindful) |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8397139 The pace of change, the deadlines, dysfunctional corporations, and for the past few years daily stand up meetings - what did you do yeasterday, what are you going to do today, do you have any impediments? Ad nauseum. Fuck it. I'm DONE with it. At 43 I'm changing careers to nursing. I've heard there's a lot of burn-out there too, but I've always wanted to be a nurse. I almost went into nursing when I (mistakenly) chose CS as a major. |

Make some games that are free, but with add ons that cost money! Make something that you like, and need! someone already made an app that connects all conspiracy sites together....but it could be improved. Just because someone has made an app doesn't mean that it's good, or can't be improved upon. Look for that if you need ideas. |

Ya, it can get annoying and seem monotonous at times, but maybe you just need to move on to a different project or change things up a bit somehow! Quoting: LibertyRises Right now where I am most IT people are sort of stuck in their jobs. The economy isn't so great and most programmers are clinging to their current jobs - hesitant to make a jump in an uncertain job market. New technology, learn this amazing new framework which will solve all of your problems, I need this (2-3 weeks worth of work) project done yesterday - I don't care if you work 20 hours a day for two weeks, what have you done for me lately, is it done yet... After a couple decades, it do get old. |
