Why so serious? Im not "black" or "afrocentrist" or a "thief" but im also not a "sheeple" to sit back and believe everything the tv tells me. Why I am so interested is because this same phenomena has happened before. In the 80's races were classified as Caucasian, Mongoloid and Negroid.

From a racial point of view in the UK people from sub-saharan africa, african americans, black british etc would be called black. Its not seen as a perjurative term.

Caucasian people are called white.

Of "asian apperance" or "asian" is a common referance in the press. This could be either people from east/south-east asia or south asia. Kinda confusing when they are two clearly different races. Theres a bit of a reluctance to call people "indian" incase they are from Pakistan. Likewise "Chinese" incase they are from Japan, Indonesia etc.

I'd say we are more likey to note someones nationality when describing people from Asia. i.e "a Japanese guy" "an Indian girl".

Think about it, are chinese people called yellow? are native americans called red? are the blackest people on earth called purple? Actually the answer is yes. I had a friend in college from Zimbabwe who was white, had a British sounding accent so everyone assumed he was English born. He immigrated with his family in his teens and became an American citizen. Officially on paper he was African American. That term refers to country of origin, not race. He ran into many issues with the financial aid department and different black organizations when they realized he wasn't black. So if they want to separate themselves by the color of their skin, then they should call themselves Black Americans, because my friend was a true African American.
