i find it a bit backward....
back then there was bugger-all fresh water in those areas and climates.. it was considered almost priceless...
most people drank date/fruit [et al] juice.. which would be abundant.. these of course would naturally ferment the longer it was stored.... alcohol is a wonderful preservative too.... so i think historically, there was a lot of drunkies going on....
