There are progressive governments that allow cannabis and prostitution. I've been to Amsterdam twice in the past three years. I would say that humans have chosen to live in civilization as a superior alternative to the "law of the jungle." This requires some compromise when it comes to personal liberties, but is well worth it on balance. Government should only limit freedom when necessary for the greater public good.

Fortunately, my state will opt into the Medicaid expansion. That means I will never be without insurance again beginning next January. It also means that never again will I have to file bankruptcy for a life-saving operation. President Obama is definitely moving the country in the right direction, and those who can't see this are fools. A civilized country ensures the health of its citizens, and a shitty country does not. That's why this needs to happen regardless of the cost.

Nothing is more oppressive and freedom-limiting than poverty. Poverty is not just a matter of personal failure, but of societal failure. It is everyone's problem. Nothing could be more liberating than ensuring that everyone's basic needs are met. This "Obamacare tax" or penalty, or whatever, is a paper tiger. No teeth. Failure to pay the penalty doesn't result in garnishment, liens, or levies. They can't go after your wages, property, bank accounts. If you ignore the penalty you will get a strongly worded letter. I suggest setting aside a special corner of the recycle bin for those strongly worded letters.

I like the earlier post about an attitude of dishonesty towards the government and their collection agency. Even better would be a campaign of disinformation to flood them with phony data. I think that applies to the hellth care providers as well.
