Canada's War on Pot Just Got Weirder: Snowboarding Cops to Chase Pot Smokers at Ski Resorts
[link to drugpolicy.ca]

Prohibition took another strange turn this week when it was reported that RCMP officers in Alberta have started to strap on snowboards and patrol the Lake Louise and Nakiska ski resorts in an effort to deter “substance abuse”.

From the CBC:

The officers, who are in uniform and carrying weapons, are focusing their attention on substance abuse on the chairlifts and gondolas.

“It’s going to deter people from bringing narcotics or have that second look of doing something on the ski hill because they know there is going to be a police presence,” said RCMP Cpl. Jeff Campbell, the detachment commander in Lake Louise. (…)

Two officers will be on patrol Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays as well as holidays including March break and Easter weekend. RCMP hope to expand the program once they have more officers certified.”

Officials from Lake Louise have gone on record welcoming the RCMP presence, but have also made a point of clarifying that crime isn’t an issue at the resort, which raises a number of questions as to why such a program even exists.

With 65% of Canadians in favour of either legalizing or decriminalizing cannabis, should the RCMP really be expanding their efforts to clamp down on casual use?

The RCMP is touting the ski patrols as a “pro-active policing initiative” but given that neither ski hill (nor any ski hill for that matter) has any real need for a police presence, is it an appropriate and responsible use of police resources?

assholes got nothing better to do. They are pushing this year for ice huts on Canadians. It has always been the case a few brewskies or shots were taken when out ice fishing here in the north. Now cops have the authority to come out and charge you if you have a ice hut you are fishing in that does not meet the requirements and you are drinking. The new huts must have a sleeping quarters and kitchen installed. Yea right.

That is where we have to draw the line.Ice fishing and drinking go like peanut butter and jam. One without the other just isn't the same.

The title line of this thread is really funny.
Just imagine a reality show based on this.

The Snow Job
scenario
Cloaked in white thermal body huggers, 2 pot patrollers gave chase after 2 pot heads.
The freshly powdered snow created near perfect boarding conditions for a capture.

Sadly, the Patrollers forgot to wax their boards and couldn't follow the pot heads as they showboated off the safe slopes.

Sitting at the High Mountain Lodge, Pot Patrollers sip hot chocolate, licking whipped cream off their mountie moostaches whilst recounting the day.

Tag line at credit roll...I love my job..

sad world.

in france's ski resorts, there are cops with breathalysers on the slopes. too many accidents with drunk people on skis and snowboards, costs too high for the local communities, yada yada...

sad world.

that being said: the most fun i had in the last decade, was learning to snowboard while high as fuck.

Phucking RCMP with nothing to do !!! You're going after afternoon enjoyment now? What, did too many stupid people out there bite the dust and smoked the lift poles? or are you catering to all the tourists who are put off by the locals enjoying THEIR fucking mountain.

I say fuck it. Close the mountain to the tourists who can't keep their yaps shut. You hear that!!! ... go board somewhere else. Canada's slopes are closed. I wish I wasn't at work ... I wanna go carve it up now and find Bullwinkle so we can play some cat & mouse on the slopes.

I imagine these "officers" are ex ski patrol members who needed a job with more pay, a bigger title and more authority.

1. Aren't ski resorts privately own. Unless potheads are really a huge problem and the resorts ask for their help, cops have no place patrolling on private properties.

2. Its difficult enough to make a smoker do anything, why go after physically active smokers? You want them back on the couch of their mamas basement?

Whiles I am fully in favor of weed and it being legal, I do think that like any narcotic substance, driving under the influence, operating heavy machinery, doing dangerous activities, things like this it just makes sense to crack down on..

Like skying drunk, whiles great fun, will probably lead to someone getting hurt.. Why should any other drug be different?

Oh, yeah. And it's not a "narcotic." Narcotics are made from opium, you stupid bastards. Not everything they tell you at Mountie School is the truth. Smoke a joint sometime. You'll never bother a snowboarder again.

Please do me a favor then and never have a spliff while you're riding the chair or gondola up. I hear what you're saying ... but I don't think you fully understand where some are coming from.

We all know there are some people who should just stay away from pot. Same goes for booze. So it's okay for anyone over 18 to hit the lodge for lunch and have a couple beers right? All things in moderation right? This is no different. Police are at the hills I thought to prevent theft ... I assume they just took it upon themselves to enforce this part of their mandate so they could get paid to carve all day.

I still want to see if these fuckers can actually ride ... or if they just hide out on the groomed trails all day.

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

The term narcotic originally referred medically to any psychoactive compound with any sleep-inducing properties. In the United States it has since become associated with opioids, commonly morphine and heroin and their derivatives, such as hydrocodone. The term is, today, imprecisely defined and typically has negative connotations. When used in a legal context in the U.S., a narcotic drug is simply one that is totally prohibited, or one that is used in violation of strict governmental regulation, such as heroin or morphine.

This isn't a thread about USA and it's vague altered definitions!

Keep in mind that I've smoked the stuff for the last 15 years, I am all for it, just that I also respect the rights of other people and their not having to smell it or be affected by my altered reaction times if I do something hardcore, you know?
