Payment-In-Lieu-Of-Tax ? Utility Bill Question ?? Help Please!
I always see this on my electric bill and I finally decided to try and figure out what it is.

I read the Wiki on it.
[link to en.wikipedia.org]

And I read my city's explanation on their website.
"The Payment-in-Lieu-of-Tax is an amount equal to the taxes that would be charged for utilities if the utility were privately owned."

I'm far from a tax code expert, in-fact, it confuses the hell out of me.. LOL

Also, does this still apply if you are outside of city limits? It's kind of strange but my neighborhood is in the city, yet it is outside of city limits because they voted not to have it annexed, or something like that. We have city electric but we have to provide our own trash service and we are not subject to city ordinances.

Anyway, I just thought I'd throw this out there to see if it's a pretty normal thing, or if I should be calling my utility company?

Thanks for all your help,
Rich

This sounds to me as though they are a government or city owned utility company and are therefore unable by law to collect taxes on their services. So instead they hit you with this "payment in lieu" which happens to equal that amount. That seems messed up, I would call them and complain.

Here is a link to where they explain it on the bill, and what it looks like.

It usually run anywhere from $18 to $35. I know it's a percentage of something but I'm not sure if it's calculated on my Electric, Water or Sewage usage or all of the above. I'll try to figure it out.
