Looks like that "missile" came from behind.
I had no idea we have missiles that can travel at 20,000 miles and hour inside of our atmosphere....

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 32004531

It looks to me like the "missile" came from the right (relative to the meteor) as the meteor was descending towards earth. Keep in mind that the stated altitude of the original "missile intercept" reports was 20km, which is roughly 65 thousand feet, an altitude which isn't outside the realm of possibility. Gary Power's U-2 was damaged by a proximity fuse detonation from a S-75 (SA-2) SAM somewhere between 65 and 70 thousand feet, and that was back in 1960!

The Russians have advanced S-400 variants with some ABM capability, and they have S-500 pre-production systems they have been reportedly testing that have full ABM capability. We're talking missiles that can pull between 20-30G and can reach speeds up to Mach 12 (and there may be more capable missile systems that are classified). These missiles don't have to be faster than the meteor, because its not a trailing intercept, meaning they don't have to follow behind the meteor. They just have to score a hit frontally or laterally, which again, in my opinion is still within the realm of possibility.

The real question at this point is Who shot it down.

Was it the russians using their own air defense systems.

Or did we lend a helping hand with an Interceptor ?

Keep in mind that we also had another Meteor explode over Cuba.

Aliens ?

Or perhaps we have always been the Aliens...

When the Kinetic Projectile smashed through the Meteor it shattered it into many shard that very violently burned up.

That is why you shoot it, to break it up into small chucks with lots of surface area.

With more surface area you get more friction, more heat and it burns up fast.

Detection can track incoming going at 20,000 mph, no problem. However, the meteor by the time you see this video wasnt traveling that fast. The lower atmosphere slowed it down to a manageable speed, and the tracking gave missiles maybe even their airforce time to scramble and intercept. Plausible.,
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 34241302

Correct. These meteors are incredibly fast in space but once they hit our upper atmosphere, they encounter enormous resistance that causes the meteor to slow down due to friction (and the friction causes enormous heat, which can break apart or reduce the size of a meteor before it hits earth).

Re: 30 Second Update - Russian Meteor Shot Down:CONFIRMED?
The large meteor had associated smaller meteors. A trailing, denser, smaller meteor, partially protected in the slip-stream, continued at a faster velocity than the larger meteor, which was slowed and heated dramatically by friction with the Earth's atmosphere.
 Quoting: MuzzleBreak

A smaller meteor broke up, fell back, and then gained on the meteor fast enough to blow it apart on impact?

Impossible.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 34494403

Think of a large water melon falling straight down, with a shot-put ball falling directly behind it by a couple of feet. Now imagine that they encounter a surface of 40 foot thick down-feathers. What will happen?
 Quoting: MuzzleBreak

First of all, it would be more like a small shot put chasing a bigger one, or a small watermelon chasing a bigger one. NOT a small very heavy object chasing a big, fragile, light one.

If you had two items of the same material and different mass, you may cause them to re-collide with enough air resistance, but the smaller one will never have the force to catch up with and destroy the bigger.

Following in something's jet stream makes you fractionally faster, if you have the same inertia. It can NOT cause the second object to move significantly faster than the first object it broke off from.

Your theory doesn't hold up to physics.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 34494403

So in your world-view of physics, all meteors have essentially equal density?

And what would happen to the postulated watermelon?

The main requirements for the S-500 SAM system are: an increased capability to destroy ballistic targets (medium-range ballistic missiles, tactical and operational-tactical ballistic missiles) at an interception altitude of up to 200 kilometers and flight speed of up to 7 kilometers per second, and a capability to destroy warheads of hypersonic cruise missiles, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

There you go! Local legends say these cauldrons have released projectiles in the past to defend against extra terrestrial (not necessarily alien) threats. There have been several threads on these cauldrons and how they are very real but so incredibly remote that researching them is very difficult.

Someone besides us may be here already and watching BOTH their asses and ours!!
Anyone recall the mysterious cauldrons buried in Russia that as legend goes are some sort of planetary defense system? Could this be our first evidence of this since there are no known technologies capable of pulling this off?

 Quoting: MuzzleBreak

No, but one can assume a chunk separated from a larger mass of the same thing will likely be composed of the same material.

The aforementioned watermelons might "touch", but the difference in speed gained from traveling in something's jetstream, especially when you have around the same initial speed as the larger object, is fractional to the total speed of the first object. So, an object broken off and following in the larger's wake, assuming they both start at the same speed, can only gain so much of a speed advantage.

You see stock cars gain fractions of an inch on each other, but that's two objects of the same mass, with the same energy to inertia input. Even under balanced conditions the difference is minute.

The smaller object would still have proportional air resistance. Besides, larger objects have a larger terminal velocity (the max speed at which it can fall).

The second object would have to travel many times the speed of the larger one to destroy it! Think of the difference in mass! The smaller object blasted clear to the other side.

I say again, it's physically impossible for a meteor to lose a small chunk, and then accelerate it in its own jetstream to a speed great enough to destroy it.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 15740069

The truth is we don't know, because the S-500 is still in the pre-production stage and still classified.

But the S-300 and S-400 are known to use various warhead types (including nuclear) including those described in this wiki excerpt:

"A conventional explosive blast warhead, fragmentation warhead, or continuous rod warhead (or a combination of any of those three warhead types) is typically used in the attempt to disable or destroy the target aircraft. Warheads are typically detonated by a proximity fuze or by an impact fuze if it scores a direct hit. Less commonly, nuclear warheads have been mounted on a small number of air-to-air missile types (such as the AIM-26 Falcon) although these are not known to have ever been used in combat."

I looked for this on other vids to try and help prove it was shot by something (as you can clearly see). Instead I ended up debunking it. On the original (not zoomed in) vid, you can see it is the light from the glass on the moving car.

There is also no "evidence" in the smoke trail at that point afterwards and would be.

Anyway, here is a better vid I had not seen. Right at the point of the fireball you can see the meteor leading it.

Considering that the asteroid was coming in over one of Russia's largest nuclear waste storage facilities one would think that place would have something in place to keep from turning the cancer treatment center, etc. into a really large dirty bomb.

I'd have some excellent air defense over a pile of nuclear waste, if it was in my yard.
