So, we can conclude a few things:
1) It was shot down/disintegrated with something going even faster than it was.
2) If it had hit the city intact thousands would have died.
3) The aliens are friendly and shot it down to help us out.

They dont shoot at where the meteor or missile is, they shoot where it is going to be. Thats not what we're talking about in this thread. There is evidence as outlined in the OP that something hit it coming up from behind, ie. going faster than the object itself.
