Lack of ambition with my job, causing problems with co workers.
It's been a while since I wanna put this out there to hear feedback but I don't know exactly how to. You see I've been working in the same area for many years and I've grown complacent. I am a musician by vocation and that is my true passion so my job is mainly to pay bills and have stability (which I do have). The problem comes with not really having any love for the job, it's just something I try to overcome but I can't have interest in it to save my life.

When co workers and superiors sense this they begin being hostile in subtle manners. Most of my coworkers are ambitious to be promoted and it seems this is actually valued by the superiors. I lack this ambition and I have to admit of being a bit stuck. The direct problem with this is that in every job I've had when people realize my lack of interest they start trying to pressure me, maybe subconsciously trying to show me that they're offended by my lack of interest.

Now mind you I am very responsible and I do my tasks and always show up on time, I am also very trustworthy and overall clean record. But even when being OK doing my job that seems to never be enough. People notice I just essentially don't give a damn and they develop a tacit animosity towards me.

I am about to finish my definitive music project and if this doesn't go anywhere I am gonna leave music altogether and I am a bit worried about my future. I am about to be 30 y/o and while a relatively smart guy I've never been a studious person and although I could probably spend the rest of my life doing what I do and survive comfortably I sense that this lack of ambition will play against me in the future. It seems I am bound to become a mediocre person and I can't seem to get out of this loop.

Can anyone relate?

Something pretty sweet about your particular line of work is that you can pick up and move (with a bit of saving) just about anywhere in the world, and have a job waiting for you.

Ever consider turning your life upside down voluntarily, and moving to another country? Another continent?

There are about to be some absolutely history-rocking fireworks in the USA relatively soon; who'd wanna miss that? =)

Pursue Truth.

This hard, tangible thing we call reality: the chair you sit upon, the computer, your beverage, cigarette, the air around you, is composed of 99.99999...% Space. Contrary to popular belief, energy-mass does not define the Space, but rather is defined -by- the Space. The all-permeating Space is a vibrating, infinitely dense medium of geometric discretion; a cube octahedral vector equillibrium. This is the One existence, and the only thing that exists, simultaneously. There is nothing else.

We do not live in a "big bang" universe.
We do not live in a "created" reality.
Our reality is a perpetually -creating- model, and It is aware.
Space is aware.
I AM aware.
"God", some call it.

Sometimes I feel like Neo in the 1st matrix movie. Also I find myself much more fulfilled when debating online about philosophy, theology, ancient mysteries, anthropology and politics than with the prospect of being promoted. It doesn't help the fact that I actually make pretty much the same money on the position I am now than if I were to get a promotion.

Work is fucking work. You're trading labor for cash. There is nothing "fun" about it. It's business. Anybody who thinks it should fun be is an asshole.

If they are getting one Euro of labor for every one Euro they pay you then there should not be a problem. It sounds like the asshole you work for wants 2 euros of labor for one euro of pay. That's what he's really saying to you. He wants to fuck you in the ass and he want's you to smile when he does it. Screw him. Don't let it bother you.

One for one is all the fucker deserves. No more, no less.

Anyway I've been in the USA and honestly I would like to be there to fight the commies when TSHTF. If the patriots need some back up be sure to drop me a line and have an AK-47 waiting for me wink

Well first I never said I wanted work to be fun, i know what work is supposed to be and I am ok with it. Secondly I don't think my superiors want to exploit me, it's just that in every work I've been it's like they look at me as a guy that could give out more and chooses not to. People sense I am relatively smart in certain areas, like the way I talk and and my knowledge of certain things and they probably conclude I should be striving to get a better position because of it, but I don't, I just try to get out of the limelight the most possible, just do my tasks and gtfo. Some of my coworkers come by in their free time, bring cookies, they meet with others outside of work, throw parties. Most of these are really bent on getting a promotion. It's the way life works you know.

A while ago I was surprised that a coworker who I would never have guessed by his whole demeanor, actually is bent on being promoted to director of one of my company's establishments to be inaugurated. I could have never imagined it. And in this convo he actually spoke very badly of some people in other departments who have been working for more than a decade in the same position. It's like for most people this is the worst of sins, it makes you some sort of pariah. That certainly shocked me and altered my perception of work dynamics. I think people must consider me some sort of pariah too.

Re: Lack of ambition with my job, causing problems with co workers.
I can totally relate to this! Years ago I trained for 4 years for a career and found when I got there I did not enjoy it. Since then I have done all types of jobs to pay the bills while travelling and enjoying my life. Like yourself I am reliable, trustworthy, and even quite good at what I do but I am just not really that interested in this job.

There are people here at this workplace who are really ambitious and competitive but I just can't see the point - the job is not even that interesting.

I really believe the key is to find your passion and then you feel like you aren't even working. You are quite lucky in that you already have something that you are passionate about! Keep plugging away at the music and hopefully eventually you can give away the other dead end jobs.

I am currently "marking time" in the position I am in until something more interesting comes up. There are heaps in the same boat believe me, it is not just you!

Mediocre? By what standard? Look, I spent 25 years in corporate America, stepping on people and playing games to get ahead, disparaging workers like you. And guess what? I made it very high up the ladder and...it fucking sucks! Soul-sucking, working 80 hour weeks, political bs, etc. I guess it's better to make 6 figures hating what you do than minimum wage, but the cost is the same...your happiness, your soul.

To me, having crested the society-approved mountain that defines success, I now know that happiness and success are more about personal satisfaction and peace. If you can find a way to provide for your basic needs doing something you love, YOU, my friend, are not mediocre! You are to be envied and should consider yourself lucky and wildly successful! Pursue your passion!

Thanks for chiming in. I guess it's somewhat relieving to hear there's more people in the same page. Actually the "I hate being a computer programmer" thread the other day got me thinking of making this thread.

Unfortunately I doubt I will ever do anything with music. I've been preparing this album for 3 years plus and I am really proud of what we're doing. I will invest my savings in having a decent recording but I know beforehand that being the genre we do it won't get far. I can't keep wasting money on doing music, I feel like I should try to save and get some stability in my life instead of wasting all money on pursuing musical chimeras. People say pursue your dreams but when you get to my age and you're on your own the bills begin to pile up and the prospect of getting old and the danger of losing your job and ending up fucked is ever looming.

Thanks for your contribution, interesting post for sure. I gotta tell you, I wouldn't mind to do my 8 hour shift and get out and continue doing my thing in my spare time. But when a few years pass and you start getting shit from co workers and superiors who are bent on reminding you that you're just not like "the others" then the stress begins conflicting with your peace of mind. The vibe turns dense and dark and difficult to withstand. Now with the economic crisis changing jobs is lunacy. So you gotta take the shit and try to remain sane. But honestly me, and everyone else I know, are feeling like everything becomes harder to do every day more. Any project becomes an herculean task to carry out instead of a hopeful endeavor. I can't even begin to describe all the obstacles we've had to make an album, it just boggles the mind. I am so tired and frustrated that it really sucks all my spirit to try to do anything.

Haha fun stuff man, thanks for the support. I hope the music project turns out a success but if not I may have to really apply myself to reinvent myself and actually achieve something fulfilling in life. I may not be interested in my particular line of work, even if I appreciate the fact that I can live off it. But I am actually an ambitious person in the sense that I couldn't live without thinking I am actually striving for something fulfilling.

This person has wisdom OP. take it from me 50 now, promotions are mostly bullshit. If I had to do it over I'd do a lateral move every 3 or 4 years to another department and claim to be building 'breadth'. After all its a pyramid scheme, we can't all be directors! If you have actual skills you are better off. Those dumbasses in high places have forgotten how to do the work and when they are inevitably let go they arel not employable

Re: Lack of ambition with my job, causing problems with co workers.
Well, I graduated almost 2 years ago and have been steadily employed. Was laid off last month from my second job and after a month got another one, starting in like 2 days.

Anyways, OP, I've had the same problem. For me, work is work, I just go and I look at it as a transaction (which it technically is), I do work and get paid in return. Would I love to love my job? Of course, but most people are not in that position.

I've noticed when I'm on certain medications, like Adderall for instance, I actually enjoy working more, so it's possible people in our situation may be dealing with depression and require medication to really feel that zest for life some just happen to have naturally (bastards, lol.) It's definitely unfair, but to survive you have to do what you have to do. I currently rely on Adderall but get some nasty withdrawals on my weekends when I don't take it, so by Monday I feel really low again, followed by tons of motivation, and repeat. The drug does develop a tolerance, though... =\

I know what you mean though with regards to colleagues jumping down your throat like they sense you don't fit in like a fellow zombie. I've had that at the last two jobs, and I am hoping to God that this time may be different as the environment is supposed to be MUCH more relaxed.

My last job was in a mid sized company and there was tons of politics, and not to mention I didn't even like my job as they had me doing the most mundane and pointless crap that could have been automated. The constant meetings, arguing, blah! I actually started getting panic attacks after a while since I truly did hate it that much.

It's really depressing to see some people just thrive while others and yourself have to work 10X as hard just to get stuff done because you're dealing with an unknown illness or that's just how you were made. It sucks. Drugs are the answer for some in this regard, and our lovely prohibitionist climate makes them hard to get our hands on. It's scary how things are right now. Some people get royally screwed in life due to things out of their control and then can't even take the control to make things better, in essence, making criminals out of victims.

Go get some bloodwork done, you could have testosterone defficiency, or some type of brain chemistry issue. People like us who are not filled with motivation tend to be suffering from some type of illness I've discovered. I have VERY low testosterone and recently found out that I have low dopamine as a result (the motivation - go for it hormone). But, because I'm only 26, doctors refuse to treat me thinking I just want steroids and send me on my way telling me I'm "normal", which is bullshit, so I've had to result to illegally purchasing them and will soon be treating myself, so thank you useless medical system.

Anyways, you get my point, if you can, goto the doctors, something might be going on.

Re: Lack of ambition with my job, causing problems with co workers.
You're a piece of shit loser. You're the paradign of the metro-sexual nancy-boy "artiste" and why Spain is in the shitter. Do you want to go the way of Greece?
Pluck yer guitar, bang your drum, plink your piano you lazy-ass, turtleneck wearing wanker. We workers will bring the Spain of Franco back from the EU abyss. You self-indulgent, ungrateful poseur! You make me sick.

Kidding, of course. Just want to fullfill your request for the "piece of shit" call-out.

I think you're doing ok. Why kill yourself stressing about a job you don't give a fuck about. You give them your time, they give you money. All the rest is bullshit.

I hope the music project works-out for you. Smooth sailing and all best.
 Quoting: BxMac

Haha fun stuff man, thanks for the support. I hope the music project turns out a success but if not I may have to really apply myself to reinvent myself and actually achieve something fulfilling in life. I may not be interested in my particular line of work, even if I appreciate the fact that I can live off it. But I am actually an ambitious person in the sense that I couldn't live without thinking I am actually striving for something fulfilling.
 Quoting: Manu-Koelbren

I think what you are sensing and feeling, are the vibrations of endgame... I feel it, and see it in many people that have a good vibrational frequency...

There are energies in motion on this planet, that is affecting everything, and the higher your frequencies, the more you feel it...

The ambition to strive for the future is simply not here, because in reality, there is no future here... People cannot put a finger on it, but they sense it...

Not doom and gloom - a sense of moving on...

I, like you, make a decent living and good at what I do...
But, I do not really have much interest, other then earning to pay my bills...

My difference - I am not constantly around co-workers... I have an on the road, home situation...

Re: Lack of ambition with my job, causing problems with co workers.
Last week I was at a meeting with my bandmates and I suddenly fainted. Since then for some reason I've been feeling totally overloaded and struggle a TON at work to deal with customers and BS which usually I cope with very well. I think stress is really getting the best of me right now.

I went to the doctors they say I have psychological issues. I must admit I've been thinking about your post a lot. It's true, I don't have that "zest for life" and it's probably due to some biochemical imbalance. It's funny how the kind of person we become is influenced by chemicals being released by our brain.

Work is fucking work. You're trading labor for cash. There is nothing "fun" about it. It's business. Anybody who thinks it should fun be is an asshole.

Everyone needs to make a living and if you get ditched from your work that's kinda hard. I watched a Japanese movie yesterday about how Samurai warriors ended up jobless after one of Japan's civil wars and were threatening to commit hara kiri in front of temples in order to get a pittance. In fact, here it is, so you get an idea of how hard it can get for people when they can't attain a livelihood.

I've come to never be ambitious in someone elses empire unless you are the type thats happy to get down on your knees or bend over and sell your soul.

Manu, you sound bored.

I suggest you play your music in a hotel bar or something and use the day job as a means of keeping afloat, or that you do a part time course on philosophy if that is your thing, to keep the mind interested and the grey matter ticking over.

If you can't do that then just give up and become a tramp.

I'm sure "Manu plays the Beef Bugle featuring the songs of Yani" will be a smash hit.

I am right at that point when a person falls into that dreadful inertia of routine, going to work, coming back home tired, trying to rest, feeling like I never get any rest, having to do house chores, cooking, errands, and then I am back at work feeling drained. Repeat 6 or 7 days a week and then I have my free days I have no will power to do anything, I just wanna rest but I never fully do, I am just stressed and in a bad mood reading crap online or else I hang around with my gf having sex, eating and watching movies (when both our free days coincide).

Yeah I know I am doomed.
