Re: Lack of ambition with my job, causing problems with co workers.
I've come to never be ambitious in someone elses empire unless you are the type thats happy to get down on your knees or bend over and sell your soul.

When you're working for yourself then it's time to be ambitious.

HA! for sure. I can imagine my coworkers talking behind my back saying how conformist I am for being stuck where I am without any intention of getting a promotion. I suspect some of them envy me as well because I get a higher paycheck for working night shift. Surely they think "this fucker comes here, does the minimum and he gets payed more than us". But at the same time they're in a dilemma because they do not want to do the schedule I do. More fuel to the fire.

Mediocre? By what standard? Look, I spent 25 years in corporate America, stepping on people and playing games to get ahead, disparaging workers like you. And guess what? I made it very high up the ladder and...it fucking sucks! Soul-sucking, working 80 hour weeks, political bs, etc. I guess it's better to make 6 figures hating what you do than minimum wage, but the cost is the same...your happiness, your soul.

To me, having crested the society-approved mountain that defines success, I now know that happiness and success are more about personal satisfaction and peace. If you can find a way to provide for your basic needs doing something you love, YOU, my friend, are not mediocre! You are to be envied and should consider yourself lucky and wildly successful! Pursue your passion!

Most people work to pay the bills, not because they are doing what they love. There are some who love what they do, but in my experience, not the majority.

With me, I choose to make efforts with my coworkers because I have to spend a good portion of my day with them and I want it to be as pleasant as possible. I can't stand drama, so I avoid it like the plague. So, somehow I've become the person everyone confides in - because I never tell anyones secrets to anyone else. No gossip ever gets traced back to me. Not always pleasant for me, because I know too much about everyone else and I have to keep my mouth shut so that there is peace in our department.

OP, it's not the easiest economy to switch jobs in, so, if you quit, make sure you already have another job. Sometimes, a change of jobs makes you feel refreshed again and ready to work. And you may find happier coworkers.

Re: Lack of ambition with my job, causing problems with co workers.
I actually know where my problem lies, in my upbringing. When I was a child everyone used to tell me how intelligent, talented and good looking I was and I grew up thinking that I was supposed to end up achieving something important in life. It turned out that I never became talented enough to shine at anything, my intelligence turned to be useless and I aged badly and my looks faded. Now I don't see any future other than working like a slave, saving and trying to improve my lot as much as I can. Maybe for some people this would be good enough, but due to my upbringing for me it feels like a big failure, like a very miserable outlook to have.

In the current economic situation, leaving the job I have would be utter madness. I have to stay here and withstand whatever comes.

Re: Lack of ambition with my job, causing problems with co workers.
I can totally relate to this! Years ago I trained for 4 years for a career and found when I got there I did not enjoy it. Since then I have done all types of jobs to pay the bills while travelling and enjoying my life. Like yourself I am reliable, trustworthy, and even quite good at what I do but I am just not really that interested in this job.

There are people here at this workplace who are really ambitious and competitive but I just can't see the point - the job is not even that interesting.

I really believe the key is to find your passion and then you feel like you aren't even working. You are quite lucky in that you already have something that you are passionate about! Keep plugging away at the music and hopefully eventually you can give away the other dead end jobs.

I am currently "marking time" in the position I am in until something more interesting comes up. There are heaps in the same boat believe me, it is not just you!

Thanks for chiming in. I guess it's somewhat relieving to hear there's more people in the same page. Actually the "I hate being a computer programmer" thread the other day got me thinking of making this thread.

Unfortunately I doubt I will ever do anything with music. I've been preparing this album for 3 years plus and I am really proud of what we're doing. I will invest my savings in having a decent recording but I know beforehand that being the genre we do it won't get far. I can't keep wasting money on doing music, I feel like I should try to save and get some stability in my life instead of wasting all money on pursuing musical chimeras. People say pursue your dreams but when you get to my age and you're on your own the bills begin to pile up and the prospect of getting old and the danger of losing your job and ending up fucked is ever looming.
 Quoting: Manu-Koelbren

You are only 30 years old. You are still YOUNG! What if when you get old you never really did anything that was your passion. You just gave up. That old you would slap this young you.LOL Read up on the law of attraction and do some serious thinking and see and feel where you want to be.

That's precisely why I have pushed my bandmates to finish this project as a sort of testament before we all leave music altogether. This has been difficult however due to all the incredible obstacles we've been faced with, and many times we wanted to give up and quit this tortuous endeavor.

OP! I am in the exact same position. EXACT!

Also a musician who feels the pressure of "I should love my job and what society has to offer". Pffffft.

If there's one thing i realized. You get paid for labor.
How you feel about the job is completely irrelevant, as long as you are doing what is required of you.

I used to have a boss like this, and the coworkers and supervisor kept pressuring me to love my job.

Told em to stick it up their ass and quit.

Yer, i had to cut down majorly, and i barely scrape by.

But guess what!, i'm making music, and i'm happy!

You think they're happy deep down?

Also, dont expect/push for a music career. I went through this stage and ended up quitting for a while, lost of part of my soul and couldn't seem to figure out why.
Do it because you love it, and dont forget it. The rest will follow.

many folks tell me this about doing what I love and I understand where they're coming from but if you guys were around to see the situation where I live maybe you'd understand how everything has become so hard that it's difficult to enjoy anything anymore, it feels more like a torture than anything else.

For instance my singer had to go back to live with his parents on a town far away and now there's no way we can think of to make him come back. There's no jobs for him here and none of us have money to help him out. Everything else is just as shitty. It's hard to enjoy life living like this, we're more on struggle mode than anything else.

The energies are changing and many creative people no longer want to be worker drones. However, if you show up and are lazy you are creating negative karma for yourself. Change your minds approach to it and just go to work and do a your job and be thankful you have one. If your minds fights it daily than you will never be content with life.

Is it really that hard to work with right effort for 8 hours a day. You still have the rest of the time to do what your spirit wants. Change your thoughts.

I do my work, I am not lazy. I do wander off a bit sometimes, but i know how to manage my time and complete my tasks. The problem is, and this is the point of the OP, that even if you carry out your tasks, if you show no passion and ambition at your job, people will begin to turn negative towards you.

You hear people talking badly of employees who stay too long in one position and have no desire to be promoted. It's not about being lazy, it's about not being ambitious, it's seen badly. That's the point. If I were lazy they'd have fired me already.

Re: Lack of ambition with my job, causing problems with co workers.
Hi OP,

Looks like you and I are in a similar situation exept I don't have a job right now.
I'm 24 and I'm also a musician and very passionate about that.

I really understand you beacause I'm looking for a job and I already know that your situation might be mine in the near future. In fact, I already knew this situation, working with people who think that working like slaves smiling while being fucked in the a$$ to go back home at the end of the day and watch TV is the right thing to do and they try to force their idea on you.

I have the same fear as you about the idea of becoming someone mediocre in the future. It's pretty confusing.

I've read someone asking if you already thought about changing country/continent. I think about it sometimes but I fear it might bring enven more struggling in the life of an artist because changing continent = lot of money = lot of hours at the job and that is the main problem right?

All I can do is encourage you to put everything you have in your music, that's something precious.
Maybe you know that guy maybe not but check that [link to www.youtube.com (secure)]
Maybe it will inspire you to turn your situation into something creative.

Hope you'll find your way and please excuse me if my english is not perfect, but we French usually sucks in english ahah!!

You should start moving your sphere of reality to something/somewhere you actually do want/feel interest for, Manu! You'll have to take steps in your every day life to make it happen though! As you say, you've been doing this for a while... you might be a little rusty!

I'd say get a mail order bride too, but you're already a foreigner, so!? Doesn't really work the other way around!!!

I suggest you play your music in a hotel bar or something and use the day job as a means of keeping afloat, or that you do a part time course on philosophy if that is your thing, to keep the mind interested and the grey matter ticking over.

If you can't do that then just give up and become a tramp.

Re: Lack of ambition with my job, causing problems with co workers.
Work is fucking work. You're trading labor for cash. There is nothing "fun" about it. It's business. Anybody who thinks it should fun be is an asshole.

If they are getting one Euro of labor for every one Euro they pay you then there should not be a problem. It sounds like the asshole you work for wants 2 euros of labor for one euro of pay. That's what he's really saying to you. He wants to fuck you in the ass and he want's you to smile when he does it. Screw him. Don't let it bother you.

One for one is all the fucker deserves. No more, no less.

Re: Lack of ambition with my job, causing problems with co workers.
Congratulations on that MBA! You have the opportunity to pay off your debts, have money to live comfortably, travel, and put food on your table, but you don't want to?

True...money doesn't "buy" happiness, but it sure is better than being poor and in debt, struggling...working two jobs, etc., like many people do. They are miserable.

I doubt if any successful person didn't seek out those with clout. I knew a PhD who felt that his degree was all he needed. He never was nice to those in authority..in fact, he'd rather argue his beliefs and, as a result, made enemies. He was stubborn. Then he wondered why he didn't get promoted. He retired and is struggling now because whatever money he saved is not getting much interest.

I also knew a young attorney (in his 30's) who never mingled socially with those in authority. He was one of the first ones to go from his firm when they had to reduce the number of employees. He had to look for a new job...it wasn't easy.

It's just a fact that you should associate with the higher ups. I once heard Oprah Winfrey say that you always should associate with those more successful than you. This is coming from a woman who lived in poverty and was raped repeatedly by her grandfather and other men in her family. How horrible is that? Other women in her situation would have given up long ago, and here she is...happy, successful, and has enough money to do whatever she wishes.

Good luck. You have your whole life ahead of you. Make it a good one.

From another thread, this pretty much sums it up folks.

The bottom line folks, in this world if you don't have a magnetic personality you better be either be very talented or very good looking , because otherwise you're up for an uphill bumpy road. If you merely want to live a simple life and get by you WILL be targeted by those trapped in the matrix, even if you're harmless.

MK,

it is a kind of trap to be seen as very promising when you are young. You expect more out of yourself then.

But real success is not in a job title. It is in inner peace.

It sounds like you do not have inner peace - to me, THAT is the problem. The coldness of your co-workers is not good, but it will not be as troubling if you yourself have peace.

For me, you are a success already.
You have a job in a country with huge unemployment.

You are asking the right questions, the ones that do change lives.

The change may not be a change in jobs, but in your viewpoints.

I also am "under-employed" compared to the promise of my younger days. And I am really tired much of the time.

You must be competent in what you do - would you be able to work for the government? No kidding, they have somewhat less of the dog-eat-dog, you- must-get- ahead mentality.

I wish you the best of luck with your music.

But she is a tough boss too!

So how might you reach inner peace - what would work for you, OP?
