Scientists create 'sixth sense' brain implant
Scientists have created a "sixth sense" by creating a brain implant through which infrared light can be detected.
Although the light could not be seen lab rats were able to detect it via electrodes in the part of the brain responsible for their sense of touch.
Similar devices have previously been used to make up for lost capabilities, for example giving paralysed patients the ability to move a cursor around the screen with their thoughts.

Aw yeah. The beginning of human augmentation with computers has started.

It's not humans, people.

It's lab rats....

For now...

Lab rats are now able to "sense" infrared light...

Great.... And how is this useful?

Imagine if you will, such an implant thing becoming sophisticated enough that you can read webpages with it. Imagine if you will, being able to read and post on GLP simply by thinking about it. Being able to send/receive texts just by thinking about it. Being able to store your personal data inside your own head, instead of on some corporate owned cloud or home PC

Being able to access all the knowledge of the world just by thinking about it. Details step by step instructions for anything and everything instantly available to your brain.

That would be a pretty big bootstrap augmentation for many many people!

Well these things have been in sci-fi novels for decades, not much more sinister than the comm-pads that did all this stuff, such as in star trek, which have now come to life in the form of the tablet pc

some 2 years ago i was watching a chinese scientist on tv.
he said:

"in 5 to 10 years humans will be cyborgs it will be normal to have implants for lots of things."

has anyone heard of the cybernetic eye developed by germany and israel?
blind people which still haver a working nerve can use em.
he best about it is...you can upgrade it!
binoccular and night vision for example.

AMAZING!

Re: Scientists create 'sixth sense' brain implant
There's also sci fi stories about the barbarians remaining in the dark ages while the new human v2.0 moved on to greatness heh

Pretty sure we'd also see this happening, with the "pure-human " faction against the "tech-enhancement" and perhaps a third faction, the "bio-enhancement" faction.

We'll make little "preserve" villages for the pure-animal human faction, like the indian preserves, you know? Like little enclosed amish communities ya!

I'm sure in a new Animatrix world, humans with brain chips would work absolutely fine. And I'm sure that after we're all nuked, all of the rational humans will live above their gravitating cities with the robot humans working underneath them.

Thank you for the pin.

What I like the sound of is this:-
The study is part of an international effort to build a whole-body suit which allows paralysed people to walk again using their brain to control the device's movement.
Infrared sensing could be built into the suit to inform the person inside about where their limbs are and to help them "feel" objects.

How much easier would his live be if he could just think out of a speaker, instead of having to synthesis everything with a bunch of bio-marker readers?

Re: Scientists create 'sixth sense' brain implant
Tats great 4 ppl with disabilities and all, but in a few years when sht like this hits the mainstream, everybody will want 2 enhance their human capabilities i'm sure of it... The age of the cyborgs is coming my friends. You all will be faced with a hard choice. Will u keep up with societe by enhancing ur brain, but loose ur humanity and disconnect from ur true inner powers @ the same time, or stay boring and acheive those goals trough hard work and meditation... Why are we always in search 4 the magic pill...

Well i'm definitely choosing to leave my brain the way god intented thank you. Think about it, nature is ALWAYS more efficiant than anything we will ever build. So while the pll who choose the implants will only limit their powers, mine will keep growing... Maybe @ a slower rate but when i finally reach their levels, they will be stuck there until the technologie becomes better, i'll keep growing. No one will control my evolution but me.

We already got cameras to detect them. You dont need an implant. Its easy to make diy IR detector, i sense something sinister
