Retail Apocalypse: Why Are Major Retail Chains All Over America Collapsing?
If the economy is improving, then why are many of the largest retail chains in America closing hundreds of stores? When I was growing up, Sears, J.C. Penney, Best Buy and RadioShack were all considered to be unstoppable retail powerhouses. But now it is being projected that all of them will close hundreds of stores before the end of 2013. Even Wal-Mart is running into problems. A recent internal Wal-Mart memo that was leaked to Bloombergdescribed February sales as a “total disaster”. So why is this happening? Why are major retail chains all over America collapsing? Is the “retail apocalypse” upon us? Well, the truth is that this is just another sign that the U.S. economy is falling apart right in front of our eyes. Incomes are declining, taxes are going up, government dependence is at an all-time high, and according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the percentage of the U.S. labor force that is employed has been steadily falling since 2006. The top 10% of all income earners in the U.S. are still doing very well, but most U.S. consumers are either flat broke or are drowning in debt. The large disposable incomes that the big retail chains have depended upon in the past simply are not there anymore. So retail chains all over the United States are now closing up unprofitable stores. This is especially true in low income areas.

When you step back and take a look at the bigger picture, the rapid decline of some of our largest retail chains really is stunning.

It is happening already in some areas, but soon half empty malls and boarded up storefronts will litter the landscapes of cities all over America.

It's a cascading event that will pick up steam over the next few weeks/months. It's been happening here (second highest income per capita in the US next to Orange County) since last December, and anyone who can't see it is in complete denial or they still have a job and want to pretend it's all fine for their own denial to keep feeding itself.

We are screwed. Have some flowers hf

Retail has been dying for a long time now, at least since the dot com crash, but it has lately taken a turn for the worse now that deflating is setting in, money is drying up in the economy, no jobs, no lending, people not spending.

I don't think so. Internet sales offsets it a bit but I think all sales are down. I think advertising on the internet is down also.

Kill the middle class, kill your consumer base. The short-sighted, off-shoring MBAs have not understood this. They will.

Big thanks also to Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush II, and Obama.

The reason is simple, the rich is getting richer, the poor's getting poorer. It's happening worldwide.

I've been saying for years,I feel like it's because of the internet. They want us at home as much as possible. Like vacations,middle-class families cant take vacations any more or hardly go to an amusement park. Trying to weedout the ones that "dont belong"

During the past ten years or so many retail chains have closed down, leaving us with Walmart, J.C. Penny, Kroger, Safeway, etc. Most of the mom and pop stores are no longer in existence.

Now even the few that still remain are having problems.

I think our times of plenty are over for good.

Meanwhile, thrift stores are booming, there is a Superthrift right were our Kmart used to be and it is booming, packed on the weekends. People I know that have NEVER shopped at thrift stores there whole life are now shopping at thrift stores, its either that or nothing. Personally, I'm not going to spend $50 on a pair of jeans when i can get them for $5.

I think it is because of the unemployment within the ranks of the middle class.

The rich are serviced by the middle class, and stores like Wal-Mart service the middle class.

Rich are getting richer, while those of the middle class are going broke.

Eventually the rich are going to lose out, too.

Re: Retail Apocalypse: Why Are Major Retail Chains All Over America Collapsing?
There are many factors, bricks and mortar is far more costly than e-commerce which is a big one l, along with the hugemongous out of city malls, and the fact that since supermarket stores diversified people are buying clothes and other items cheaper as well as the appeal of a one-stop shop.

Add to that reduced spending power due to the economic pressures, and people who hold on to their residual cash until the sales, and you have more closures of retail outlets.

Charity shops and dollar stores are flourishing as well as food chains but when you can buy everything from the commercial warehouses, even tyres and other unsual items, retail gets hit hit bad and it isn't just in the United States, check this UK article that states nearly 33% of retail stores have closed.....

Off course, the luxury goods market is on the up and will prolly never be affected.
