Lets take a 10 pack batteries as an example,

Walgreens - 2.99 plus tax
Radio Shack - 12.99 on 30 year mortgage with balloon payment at the end + first born child

internet sales?

Don't think so. Some of those chains have websites also. I'd say about half the country doesn't have disposible income left. It's all gone to fuel to get to work and food to eat. Now, those that don't have extra money anyway, have to come up with money for Obamacare.

Meanwhile, thrift stores are booming, there is a Superthrift right were our Kmart used to be and it is booming, packed on the weekends. People I know that have NEVER shopped at thrift stores there whole life are now shopping at thrift stores, its either that or nothing. Personally, I'm not going to spend $50 on a pair of jeans when i can get them for $5.

I dont know the size of your town, but thrift stores do good in smaller towns. If theres a "real store" for lack of better term right now, everyone in the town will be wearing the same shit!So usually dont go over well

who cares.

the major retail chains suck anyway.
 Quoting: Skin Suit

they are what is destroying the economy/country. small mom and pop stores were wipped out by them now everyone has to go to work for them and cant even afford to shop at them . the company store gets all your money. forced to spend all your income at the store you work at because there is no other option. the corporation sucks all the money out of the local economy sending it to headquarters bankrupting the area even further and its finaly catching up. combined with outsourcing all industry and central banks stealing from us. free market capitolism is eating itself alive. only the bottom line matters and the bottom line is greed.

The collapse of the easy credit market. These mega-stores can only prosper on easy, cheap credit models. The entire economy was built on easy credit. Many sectors are collapsing.

because people are tired of buying crap for a lot of money. My husband and I are doing great financially but I refuse to hand my money over for made in china, vietnam, indonesia garbage. I have been going to my local farmers market for veggies and have a developing garden at home. a lot of us are swapping clothes in lieu of buying new ones or going to consignment shops. The greed came around and bit the corporations in the ass. Everyone is sick of it.

The Great Obama Economic Recovery will proceed to fuller effect by mid-summer. Those of us not dead broke now, will be by then.
In his book, "Between Two Ages," Brzezinski wrote: "The technetronic era involves the gradual appearance of a more controlled society. Such a society would be dominated by an elite, unrestrained by traditional values."

it's simple, affirmitive action is a loop hole to allow thugs and moraless trash to get jobs.these thugs shoplift by unloading the stuff out the back door, while at the same time their "people" haul the rest out the front door....it's very true, seen it happen many times.then if thats not bad enough the thugs don't work, but instead are paid to harass the white women that work there.

couple that with the neighborhood around said retail stores turn into slums forcing all the white middle class to move out of the area.

Some of these stores have become obsolete. J.C. Penney sells overpriced shit, and so does many other retailers and since everyone is drowning in debt or completely broke they can't afford this overpriced shit.

We knew this economy based on nothing but consumers buying shit they didn't need would not last forever, but I'm sure everyone was just praying it wouldn't happen for another hundred years.

Because people are buying online. At least that's the case for Sears, Best Buy, and Circuit City.

And "They have websites!" is no excuse. Best buy's website sucks because they sell things overpriced compared to other online retailers.

Re: Retail Apocalypse: Why Are Major Retail Chains All Over America Collapsing?
If the economy is improving, then why are many of the largest retail chains in America closing hundreds of stores? When I was growing up, Sears, J.C. Penney, Best Buy and RadioShack were all considered to be unstoppable retail powerhouses. But now it is being projected that all of them will close hundreds of stores before the end of 2013. Even Wal-Mart is running into problems. A recent internal Wal-Mart memo that was leaked to Bloombergdescribed February sales as a “total disaster”. So why is this happening? Why are major retail chains all over America collapsing? Is the “retail apocalypse” upon us? Well, the truth is that this is just another sign that the U.S. economy is falling apart right in front of our eyes. Incomes are declining, taxes are going up, government dependence is at an all-time high, and according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the percentage of the U.S. labor force that is employed has been steadily falling since 2006. The top 10% of all income earners in the U.S. are still doing very well, but most U.S. consumers are either flat broke or are drowning in debt. The large disposable incomes that the big retail chains have depended upon in the past simply are not there anymore. So retail chains all over the United States are now closing up unprofitable stores. This is especially true in low income areas.

When you step back and take a look at the bigger picture, the rapid decline of some of our largest retail chains really is stunning.

It is happening already in some areas, but soon half empty malls and boarded up storefronts will litter the landscapes of cities all over America.

It's a cascading event that will pick up steam over the next few weeks/months. It's been happening here (second highest income per capita in the US next to Orange County) since last December, and anyone who can't see it is in complete denial or they still have a job and want to pretend it's all fine for their own denial to keep feeding itself.

We are screwed. Have some flowers hf

You of all people should know that it's all a bunch of hooey. Attendance at Disneyland is at an all time high. Talk about people having disposable incomes.

Truth be told, the collapse will not happen, guaranteed.

internet sales?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 33483045

I don't think so. Internet sales offsets it a bit but I think all sales are down. I think advertising on the internet is down also.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 9247375

In 2011, I spent about 10 grand at best buy.

2012, probably about 100. Like if I needed a cable or something right away.

I get better service, cheaper prices, and everything is shipped to my front door, most times for free. Not to mention the gas and time I save.

I think you are mistaken about the impact the internet is having on brick and mortar retail.

Deal sites can't be helping either...
