Re: Retail Apocalypse: Why Are Major Retail Chains All Over America Collapsing?
Its because the general public got stuck with all the losses and the banks, one, had insurance and two for the losses that couldn't be covered by the insurance companies the F- ED has bailed them out. They are also giving them more money credits to shore up the balance sheets against future losses that they know are coming down the pike.
There is to much debt to maintain to ever be a recovery. Debt can't just be written off like it used to, as it is leveraged through fractional derivatives now.

Its over and just a matter of time before all your kids are on the street !

Kill the middle class, kill your consumer base. The short-sighted, off-shoring MBAs have not understood this. They will.

Big thanks also to Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush II, and Obama.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 13299405

The irony

Funny thing is, the bankers profits have been hit, but they do not care, they just keep the machine going by printing/issuing more money as an illusion of an improving economy. To bad its a house of cards. They are literally bailing themselves out in the short run to keep the system afloat, but the small leak keeps growing as they keep trying to bail out the economy waiting for the average Joe consumer to come back. This is why you see the wealth of the upper class keep growing while the middle and poor class continue to dwindle. Its a fake supply and demand economy now and the only demand is coming from the 1% at the top.

Re: Retail Apocalypse: Why Are Major Retail Chains All Over America Collapsing?
There are many factors, bricks and mortar is far more costly than e-commerce which is a big one l, along with the hugemongous out of city malls, and the fact that since supermarket stores diversified people are buying clothes and other items cheaper as well as the appeal of a one-stop shop.

Add to that reduced spending power due to the economic pressures, and people who hold on to their residual cash until the sales, and you have more closures of retail outlets.

Charity shops and dollar stores are flourishing as well as food chains but when you can buy everything from the commercial warehouses, even tyres and other unsual items, retail gets hit hit bad and it isn't just in the United States, check this UK article that states nearly 33% of retail stores have closed.....

Off course, the luxury goods market is on the up and will prolly never be affected.

much much much more factors you guys can't even put it all together.

1. increase in cost of labor- this is by far the biggest reason.
2. increase in ligitation risks
3. increase in taxes
4. increase government regulations including permits, labor laws, benefits, penalties, etc..

One. The internet is destroying major retail chains. Bestbuy and others cannot compete with it and it's getting easier than ever to purchase from online stores, especially when I don't need to pay sales tax. Most stores around me do not even carry the stuff I want, yet I can order whatever I want from out of state and get it the next day. So you tell me.

Dollar is probably already dead. Maybe they're pulling out while they're ahead and trying not to make it obvious. Now it's just a matter of time until he forces the middle class to give up their constitutional rights just so they can feed they're families.

I've been saying for years,I feel like it's because of the internet. They want us at home as much as possible. Like vacations,middle-class families cant take vacations any more or hardly go to an amusement park. Trying to weedout the ones that "dont belong"

Re: Retail Apocalypse: Why Are Major Retail Chains All Over America Collapsing?
If the economy is improving, then why are many of the largest retail chains in America closing hundreds of stores? When I was growing up, Sears, J.C. Penney, Best Buy and RadioShack were all considered to be unstoppable retail powerhouses. But now it is being projected that all of them will close hundreds of stores before the end of 2013. Even Wal-Mart is running into problems. A recent internal Wal-Mart memo that was leaked to Bloombergdescribed February sales as a “total disaster”. So why is this happening? Why are major retail chains all over America collapsing? Is the “retail apocalypse” upon us? Well, the truth is that this is just another sign that the U.S. economy is falling apart right in front of our eyes. Incomes are declining, taxes are going up, government dependence is at an all-time high, and according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the percentage of the U.S. labor force that is employed has been steadily falling since 2006. The top 10% of all income earners in the U.S. are still doing very well, but most U.S. consumers are either flat broke or are drowning in debt. The large disposable incomes that the big retail chains have depended upon in the past simply are not there anymore. So retail chains all over the United States are now closing up unprofitable stores. This is especially true in low income areas.

When you step back and take a look at the bigger picture, the rapid decline of some of our largest retail chains really is stunning.

It is happening already in some areas, but soon half empty malls and boarded up storefronts will litter the landscapes of cities all over America.

How long ago? Where have you been? I would have thought they would have been gone 10 years ago....along with K Mart.

Have you visited those stores in the past 10 years? I felt like I was the only customer in the store!

The reason is simple, the rich is getting richer, the poor's getting poorer. It's happening worldwide.

[link to www.pbs.org]
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 33790551

not really, it started when with Socialism taking over Britain and America electing a Socialist with Marxist sympathies. Actually, thanks to Bush, we were able to keep our economy going after 9/11, and then Bush made some bad economic decisions during the last two years of his Presidency, but since he basically saved our asses after 9/11, I forgive that.

At a vulnerable time for us, the old radical anti-establishment hippies who hated government decided to take over the government and Presidency. America's rapid decline - both moral and financial has led the entire world down the same path. You make it sound like a natural phenomenon, it is not.

The rich are getting poorer. There is a widening gap between the rich and the poor, however, as the Middle Class is being purposely destroyed by a demented tyrant and no one has the balls to stop it.

PBS? Seriously? Why don't we just use HuffPo or NPR?

retail chais are an intereting point, but the fact that more privately owned businesses have gone out of business under Obama - proportionately more than at any time in history, was the biggest harbinger of doom. Long time institutions that have been round 40, 50 and more years have been shuttered all over my state. Franchises like KFC and Starbucks and Denny's closed in my area over 2 years ago.

Food producers are selling tinier products in the same packaging, from thin mints to cookies to dog bones. Things are getting tinier and tinier. A burger at Burger King is higher in price and have a 2 inch diameter and are wafer thin, surrounded by a roll that looks 10x too big. We are going to hell in a handbasket, and these are just the signs of much worse things to come.

I have an allergy at times...

Have you noticed how very very thin a "Kleenex" type tissue is? They've not only thinned them out, but they're about 2 inches shorter than they ever were. Very disappointing.
