Re: Retail Apocalypse: Why Are Major Retail Chains All Over America Collapsing?
If the economy is improving, then why are many of the largest retail chains in America closing hundreds of stores? When I was growing up, Sears, J.C. Penney, Best Buy and RadioShack were all considered to be unstoppable retail powerhouses. But now it is being projected that all of them will close hundreds of stores before the end of 2013. Even Wal-Mart is running into problems. A recent internal Wal-Mart memo that was leaked to Bloombergdescribed February sales as a “total disaster”. So why is this happening? Why are major retail chains all over America collapsing? Is the “retail apocalypse” upon us? Well, the truth is that this is just another sign that the U.S. economy is falling apart right in front of our eyes. Incomes are declining, taxes are going up, government dependence is at an all-time high, and according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the percentage of the U.S. labor force that is employed has been steadily falling since 2006. The top 10% of all income earners in the U.S. are still doing very well, but most U.S. consumers are either flat broke or are drowning in debt. The large disposable incomes that the big retail chains have depended upon in the past simply are not there anymore. So retail chains all over the United States are now closing up unprofitable stores. This is especially true in low income areas.

When you step back and take a look at the bigger picture, the rapid decline of some of our largest retail chains really is stunning.

It is happening already in some areas, but soon half empty malls and boarded up storefronts will litter the landscapes of cities all over America.

Worker's take home pay is way down for three reasons:

1- higher insurance premiums

2- 2% increase in payroll taxes

3- fewer hours

Add to that the increasing number of people who have lost their jobs.

Also add to it the spike in gasoline prices.

Most people have no cushion. So something has to give. It means fewer shopping trips.

People are also eating out less, and getting fewer haircuts. The workers at those places are therefore seeing their incomes drop which means they, too, have to cut back.

And it means stores like Penney's Sears, Best Buy and Radio Shack have caving sales numbers.

I've seen a drop in my book sales since the first of the year, too, so this isn't just theoretical talk.

Well everyone is on the right track to an extent...

Internet sales are biting into big Retail, but there is more to it than that...

The increase in the withholding tax of 2% on everyone who works is a big part of this, increasing gas prices, all equal less disposable income!

And all of this after a dismal Christmas season and a contracting economy in Q4 of 2012...

This is not going to get better anytime soon...

because people are tired of buying crap for a lot of money. My husband and I are doing great financially but I refuse to hand my money over for made in china, vietnam, indonesia garbage. I have been going to my local farmers market for veggies and have a developing garden at home. a lot of us are swapping clothes in lieu of buying new ones or going to consignment shops. The greed came around and bit the corporations in the ass. Everyone is sick of it.

People have less discretionary income and the internet (amazon/ebay/etc) is killing brick and mortar businesses.

Also people with a job/money don't trust the economy. So far this year I have not spent a dime outside of food, rent, and utilities. (I don't drive)

Well since Starbucks average is less than $10 per sale, I would put them in with dollar stores in terms of the retail market...

As for housing, with interest rates at all time lows this market should be booming, and it's not at all, and sales of existing homes still suck ass in the worst of terms, at the current rate of sales we'll be twenty-five years clearing out all of the excess inventory of houses in this country. So to say the housing market has improved is like saying your kid is the least retarded one on the short bus Zazz...

You might want to watch getting your financial advise from The State of The Union Speech and Jim Cramer...both have a poor track record...

Two years my a**. More like two minutes.

The economy sucks right now. Wait until people go out to buy gas on Monday.

The prices are about 10 cents a gallon higher than they were on Friday. Psychologically, this will affect people's outlook, plus food prices will go higher as a result of the fuel prices.

Re: Retail Apocalypse: Why Are Major Retail Chains All Over America Collapsing?
We have a consumer based economy and not enough people can afford to consume at the level that it requires.

Even desperately poor people buy a few thing. Food, for example. Or maybe a much needed article of clothing. So, no matter how bad things get, there will be some shoppers here and there.

But, we need for people to have the expendable income to buy extra stuff. For people to buy impulse items and for people to buy stuff they don't need (things they can use, but could continue living without). We also need people to be able to buy expensive things like cars.

Obviously, there are some people buying these things. But, we need a higher percentage of people to be able to do that.

If everyone replaced their car in half the time they do now. If everyone bought extra clothing. If everyone went out to dinner once more per week or bought items in the deli section of the stores, then it would make a big difference.

I mean people have the extra money they earned in some legitimate fashion. This is when people feel confident and spend.

When people do not feel confident or plain do not have quite enough money, then they will be really careful. If everyone just cuts out a couple of impulse items from their grocery lists or decides to make do with last year's clothes, then retailers will feel the sting.

As for the DOW, why has it only doubled when the money supply has tripled!

The housing market is not improving - to say otherwise is simply crazy talk.

And maybe now we know why BLS has been culling wild horses...

Burger King has admitted that it is possible some of its burgers sold in the U.K. and Ireland were, in fact, tainted with horsemeat.

This is just the latest chapter in an ongoing scandal in the U.K. and Ireland involving beef burger patties tainted with meat from horses and pigs.

I've been making more purchases online lately.. its just cheaper for a lot of things.

Oh, and while the state of NY is trying to take our guns.. in my area at least.. another Walmart is going in, a target and a couple of fast food joints.. including tacco hell (I know how bad the food is for you, but I still love it).

They did finally close the CVS which sat across the street from the other CVS though, if that counts for anything. Still have a chain store sitting kitty corner to another of the same name (Stewart's shops) .. one serving mobile gas and the other.. idk, their own I guess. Crazyness.
