Re: Retail Apocalypse: Why Are Major Retail Chains All Over America Collapsing?
reality is retail stores are going under because inflation is higher than the MSM says it is, and their profit margins are evaporating, because suppliers play real economics and won't sell for less than something is really worth. obama, you can lie to the people, but the house of cards is falling and i hope you're ready for the treatment your ancestors got when they didnt do an honest days work in the cotton fields. that's right. lynching, anyone?

Re: Retail Apocalypse: Why Are Major Retail Chains All Over America Collapsing?
nice to see all the obama blametards are out in force.

Here are the reasons why retail is collapsing:

1. overcapacity of retail space - regardless of online sales, there is too much square footage.

2. over supply of merchandise - 'they' can make it faster than you can use it.

3. improvement of products lifespan.- no matter your beliefs, quality of all items is improving *except when specifically designed to have a limited life (think apple)

4. technology at capacity of human usability (we don't need supercomputers for facebook, email, and pron)

5. Online sales - why buy in store and pay the overhead, when you can get for less online

6. end game of outsourcing - started well before Obama, but continues. As well paying jobs disappear so does disposable income.

7. consumers have racked up credit and are unable to buy

8. gubmint interference is redirecting money to wars, the rich and the stock market.

9. Overhead on retail space adding too much cost to items.

That's about it in a nutshell. You don't need to be a genius to figure it out.

Re: Retail Apocalypse: Why Are Major Retail Chains All Over America Collapsing?
It isn't just in the US. Over here in the UK major retail chains and small independent shops are collapsing at an accelerating rate. There is a perfect storm of causes, and its now a death spiral than can't be checked.

1. For decades greedy consumers, without a thought for the long term effects, have been steadily clamouring for ever cheaper stuff so that they can have more of everything. Profit margins disappeared making many businesses simply lost causes at the most basic level.

2. Operating costs of businesses, at least here in the UK, have sky-rocketed. Over here the local councils have been steadily increasing business tax rates (a local tax levied by town and city councils on business properties), plus utility bills have been increasing relentlessly.

3. The internet happened. Its easy to compare everything, find the cheapest and order it to be delivered. Operations like Amazon benefit, but many more small and big businesses (who are employers and pay a much higher level of tax, than do companies like Amazon who simply shift profits offshore).

4. Advertising has become so ineffective, mainly due to over-saturation (because there are simply so many potential ways to advertise and we are mentally switching off to them), and this is a mortal problem for many businesses. As any small business owner will tell you, providing the service or product is the easy part compared to getting people to notice you are there.

5. People are spending less because they are earning less, are unemployed, or are worried about losing their jobs. Many are unemployed because of the above reasons. You don't have to work in retail to be negatively effected by the death of retail stores. Many other businesses, from air conditioning companies, to electricians, from transport firms to furniture and fittings manufacturers, and from printing firms to accountants, rely on retail businesses to be their customers.

For several years now people, especially politicians, have been distracted from many of these causes because they have been convinced it was all down to a typical 'recession'. They have ignored the other underlying factors that have been creeping up on us for ages now. But now, these factors combined with the global financial crisis have created a death spiral.

Sure, many people will start harping on about how 'greedy business owners' have brought it all on themselves. But I would caution against that attitude. Sure, there are always some who have profiteered, but they are the minority. There are countless business owners, large and small, who have put everything they own into their businesses, who have worked incredibly long hours, for many years, and who have risked everything, and who do feel the weight of responsibility for their employees, and they are breaking in large numbers; financially and emotionally.

Its always easy, as an employee, to blame business owners for all the problems. But, if you ask me, we ARE ALL to blame. We have all wanted ever cheaper and ever more stuff, we have all wanted better working conditions and more pay, we have all abandoned the real world for online shopping etc. Its fine with most people until they realise that they, or their family and friends, start losing their own jobs because of it.

We have all created a monster, and now it is devouring us and the sad thing is that there is now nothing, and no one, who can stop it. Why? Simple. As the masses, the 'great unwashed' if you will, start realising the true gravity of the situation they will turn nasty - they won't blame themselves, they will turn on each other. They will blame everyone but themselves and will rip our society limb from limb.

Our society gorged itself on cheap shit and self-righteous demands and expectations, we mortgaged the future, and then second mortgaged it, and third, and fourth, and got fat and greedy and sick. We had a party and now its over. And we look around, shake our heads and wonder why?!

How stupid are we.

What you say is true, but you do understand the reason why people are wanting less for more is because they themselves are making less, right? Inflation, globalism, healthcare, etc all play a factor in the final tally of how/where people spend their money.

If we didn't ship all of our jobs overseas, were more interested in local economies, etc then it wouldn't have likely play out this way. But internet commerce is in fact a real killer. So is 3D printing & automation/robotics in factories.

A proper functioning country is just like a family, and families dont function if their members run to other families looking for the best deal they can make with strangers.
America has become a sacrificial host for any number of foreign parasites, and there is no hope of even survival until Americans can be productive and sell their products to other lands.
You cant have a service economy for long especially if others are willing to work for less.

The three chains you mentioned exist in a totally different landscape than when they were successful.

Best Buy now equals Amazon's show room

JC Penney is in between target, high end department stores and the clothes specific chain stores in the mall.

RadioShack was forced to turn into a mobile phone store when people stopped fixing things and building things. A mobile phone store in a mall with 4 other stores that each have a physical store and kiosk in the mall.

In a consumer economy it's the consumer that always ends up with nowt.

Nature uses the produce or die method.
There is nosimple consumption model in nature, everything competes, and in doing so, either wins or loses, and eventually every organism loses out to younger, healthier competitors and killed off by a remorseless judge of efficiency and application, mother nature.

There is no socialism in nature, The various hives and nests are a monarchy or Dictatorship and any pretenders are either killed or driven off
There are no retirements in nature, one works til one dies

Because bureaucracy, regulation, outsourcing, inflation
along with tax breaks for foreign entities
have sucked the money and life out of a consumerist society
which produces very few tangible goods.

What did you expect would happen..?

Re: Retail Apocalypse: Why Are Major Retail Chains All Over America Collapsing?
If the economy is improving, then why are many of the largest retail chains in America closing hundreds of stores? When I was growing up, Sears, J.C. Penney, Best Buy and RadioShack were all considered to be unstoppable retail powerhouses. But now it is being projected that all of them will close hundreds of stores before the end of 2013. Even Wal-Mart is running into problems. A recent internal Wal-Mart memo that was leaked to Bloombergdescribed February sales as a “total disaster”. So why is this happening? Why are major retail chains all over America collapsing? Is the “retail apocalypse” upon us? Well, the truth is that this is just another sign that the U.S. economy is falling apart right in front of our eyes. Incomes are declining, taxes are going up, government dependence is at an all-time high, and according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the percentage of the U.S. labor force that is employed has been steadily falling since 2006. The top 10% of all income earners in the U.S. are still doing very well, but most U.S. consumers are either flat broke or are drowning in debt. The large disposable incomes that the big retail chains have depended upon in the past simply are not there anymore. So retail chains all over the United States are now closing up unprofitable stores. This is especially true in low income areas.

When you step back and take a look at the bigger picture, the rapid decline of some of our largest retail chains really is stunning.

It is happening already in some areas, but soon half empty malls and boarded up storefronts will litter the landscapes of cities all over America.

I don't know if this is off-topic - I don't think so - but here in Belgium there are big lay-offs too. In the automobile industry a Ford plant is closing as well as a Volkswagen, and in Belgian steel industry there is Arcelor Mittal (Arcelor was taken over by one of the richest persons in the world, the Indian Lakshmi Mittal a few years ago, and he promised nobody would lose his job).

It does make for a somewhat grim atmosphere, if you get my drift.

A large part of the population has now realized that you can buy like new and used for about 1/10th the cost of over priced retail junk.

Retail quality has gone down so bad in the last few years no one wants to pay 1000$ for a POS particle board furniture, 80$ for thin easily ripped jeans etc...

Kill the middle class, kill your consumer base. The short-sighted, off-shoring MBAs have not understood this. They will.

Big thanks also to Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush II, and Obama.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 13299405

Exactly so. Since most people forget we are still paying for their administrations.
People praise Reagan to the skies not considering he used
30yr. Treasuries to pay for his 8 years. For 8 Years starting in 2010-2011 the bills are just NOW coming due.
Hey thanks, Reagan.
And then you are paying for BushI along with it in the treasuries used. And Clinton who stole the SS trust fund money to cover his then current admininstration AND
sold can-kicking bonds.

So altogether the reason they have such a shortfall, the can stopped here big time, with nobody to rollover to.

If our corporations weren't such assholes and busy promoting slavery in other countries, we might actually have money to spend! But no. Instead they keep expecting us to buy flimsy, poorly made, chinese goods with monopoly money. I hope they wrack up lots of bad karma over it.

Really, you dip shit fucks don't know why retailers for failing?

* Overpriced. Wonder why Amazon is now charging taxes for all sales in CA, even though they don't have a warehouse or an actual office in CA? Because those crybabies at Walmart, Bestbuy and Staples were crying about unfair price advantage. Bestbuy, the same company that sold its Made in China gold plated HDMI cables for $200. lmao

* Poor customer service. Local retailers cannot beat the customer service provided by Amazon and Newegg.com. Ever dealt with bestbuy before?

* More options available on online retailers. Consumer don't just want a limited selection. Unless they're one of those stupid brainwashed Apple fan boys where everyone own the same exact fucking pos made in China phone. Why be different when you can all be posers. Because the media told me it's cool to own pos apple crap.

Apple, the company that Sued Samsung for "copying" when Apple themselves copied LG. I mean, what do you expect when the idiots on the panels were all Apple owning idiots.
