A group of over 100,000 dolphins spotted off the coast of San Diego caused a spectacle for nature watchers as they traveled together in an enormous pack.
'They were coming from all directions, you could see them from as far as the eye can see,' Joe Dutra said after seeing the spectacle first hand.
Mr Dutra, who captains Hornblower Cruises, was out on his daily tour with a boat full of nature watchers when he spotted the massive group of dolphins.

hmmm.

A mass EXODUS of the 2nd most sentient and intelligent animal on this planet. An unplanned, migration of a significant portion of the entire species population.

Can mean only a few things.

1. Their home is no-longer suitable for life and they are forced to re-locate.

2. They are sensing imminent danger and are fleeing to safer waters.

3. They have coordinated through use of their language, a mass migration out of their own free will, in order to find a new home with better prospects?

4. They are ill or affected by something resulting in mass confusion and un-natural behaviour.

Feds Propose Rules Allowing Navy to Harm Whales, Dolphins More Than 30 Million Times in War Games

Hawaii, California War Games Given Permission to Hurt or Kill Marine Mammals
More Than 9 Million Times, Atlantic Games More Than 21 Million

SAN FRANCISCO— The U.S. Navy would be allowed to harm or harass whales, seals, dolphins and other marine mammals millions of times during its training exercises off the Atlantic, Hawaii and Southern California coasts, according to rules proposed today by the National Marine Fisheries Service. The Navy’s war games include underwater detonations, sinking of ships, gunnery exercises and active sonar, which is so loud and intense that it can seriously harm or kill marine mammals.

The Fisheries Service is proposing to allow the Navy to harm marine mammals up to 9.5 million times in the Hawaii and Southern California Training Ranges and 21.8 million times in the Atlantic Training Range over a period of five years. This will surely result in thousands of cases of permanent hearing loss, lung injuries and death. Ocean noise is also known to harm fish; there have been reports of reduced abundance in areas with noise disturbance.

So its amasing and all and its rare and they were comming from all over and its unbelivable and a great turist attraction and bla bla bla, and the boats that followed this huge pod of dolphins had clearly a fucking compass onboard, all they had to do was fucking watch the fucking needle on the fucking compass and state the fucking direction they were headed just once, but ohh nooooooooo sheep

Just for conjecture...If there is an episode of crustal displacement the waters in the ocean will pour over the land surfaces for a time and then recede to new boundaries.

That is why it is recommended that we all get 200 miles from the coasts.

Perhaps the dolphins have become motivated to find safer waters within the oceans. They are not stupid mindless beings. They are perhaps aware of something...and unlike most of you...or mankind in general...have the intelligence to bug out to safer spaces.

It is no less stupid or logical than any other speculation.

"'They’re definitely social animals, they stick together in small groups. But sometimes, the schools come together,' marine expert Sarah Wilkin told NBC."

Even if we assume that the average pod size is maxed for each group at 200 dolphins per pod, that would be 5,000+ pods or "schools" coming together. Waaaaay more than just a few and what should be statistically normal. What are the chances of 5,000+ separate pods all finding each other and joining?? 10 billion to 1?

This just highlights that researchers truly don't know anything about what is going on, especially if they think this is just 'chance' that all 5,000 came together.

On a side note, this is the second display of this proportion, as a similar event had happened about the same time/month as last year.

they train and use dolphins for their purposes, and that´s not good ones, so they tested a new "something" and can stear the dolphins now, so they do what the army wants ?

Dolphin social cognition and joint attention: Our current understanding.
PDF
[link to www.dolphin-institute.org]

[snip]

Abstract
Recent intense interest in social cognition in dolphins reflects findings that wild dolphins live in complex societies that rely on individual recognition, a protracted period of development, coalition formation, and cooperative, as well as competitive, social behaviors. Laboratory studies have revealed a host of cognitive skills that can support such complex behaviors—for example, broad imitative abilities, abilities to understand another’s indicative cues, and spontaneous use of pointing to communicate with human companions. Joint attention is recognized as a key element of social cognition that extends from simply following another’s gaze to using pointing or gazing cues of another to select objects or locations.

Finally, what are the broader implications of the exceptional facility of dolphins for joint attention? Joint attention, as a social phenomenon, reinforces theories of the social basis of intellect in dolphins, including the evolution of exceptionally large brains (see Herman, 1980; Connor & Mann, 2006). Connor & Mann described the complexities and intricacies of social life in bottlenose dolphins at Shark Bay, Australia, including multilevel male alliances that collaborate or compete to control females, apparent female-female affiliative behaviors, and closely coordinated synchronous behaviors among pairs or trios of dolphins. These authors have also remarked on peer-group competition that can give an
Dolphin Social Cognition and Joint Attention 457
advantage to those who can “outwit” others by enlisting cooperation or by “cleverly deceiving” others—the Machiavellian Intelligence hypothesis (see chapters in Byrne & Whiten, 1988; Whiten & Byrne, 1997).
To those types of social acumen, we might add attending to others and manipulating the attention of others as social skills that can greatly benefit the informant, the receiver, or both. Recognizing attentional cues of others and what they connote, and “knowing” how to project attentional cues to others (subsumed respectively under the domains of declarative and procedural intelligence—Herman, 2006) represent exceptionally useful skills for manipulating one’s peers. Thus, in the findings from the cognitive laboratory and in observations of wild dolphin societies, there is an emerging understanding of how advanced cognitive skills manifest themselves in the real social world of the dolphin.

a comment from the article:

"I surf and teach sailing in San Diego, and I've seen large groups like this many times, maybe not quite this big, but as far as the eye can see. It just that normally they are more than 100 miles off shore, so unless you're out sailing or fishing, you're not going to see them. "
