To the "Salt is bad for you, causes high blood pressure" tards on glp, I'm here, to shut your asses up
ive read this from several glp tards in recent days, here are the facts

By Dr. Mercola

The idea that salt is bad for you and contributes to heart disease is an idea that has become more or less cemented as dogma in the West. Where did this idea come from? And more importantly, is it true?

My intention today is to show you the fallacy of the notion that salt is generally bad for you, and how salt has been indicted by so-called nutritional "experts," as well as by government regulators, without a fair trial. When you look at what the research actually says, I believe you will be convinced that salt is not only relatively benign but is a major nutritional goldmine, IF you consume the right kind.

You have probably had the benefits of a low-salt diet drummed into your head for y ears.

However, decades of scientific research have failed to prove ANY benefits of a low-salt diet, and in fact tend to show the opposite. Studies have also failed to prove salt's connection to heart disease. I will show you where this mistaken idea originated… and the sound you hear may be cardiologists' hearts breaking across the globe.

Salt is an Essential Nutrient

Salt is essential for life—you cannot live without it. Salt has always been important to human life on this planet. Even the word "salary" comes from the root "sal," because Romans were paid in salt. African and European explorers traded an ounce of salt for an ounce of gold—salt was literally worth its weight in gold. Unrefined natural salt is important to many biological processes, including:

Being a major component of your blood plasma, lymphatic fluid, extracellular fluid, and even amniotic fluid
Carrying nutrients into and out of your cells
Maintain and regulate blood pressure
Increasing the glial cells in your brain, which are responsible for creative thinking and long-term planning.
Helping your brain communicate with your muscles, so that you can move on deman d via sodium-potassium ion exchange

More than 80 percent of the salt most people consume is from processed foods. Indeed, there is far too much sodium in processed foods. But you shouldn't be eating those foods anyway—sodium is just one of MANY ingredients in packaged foods that will adversely affect your health. The salt added to these convenience foods is mostly sodium—as opposed to natural salt, which is much lower in sodium. I'll be discussing more of the differences between natural and refined salt shortly.

Overconsumption is never good. What is written in this article is really just common sense. But good that someone brings it up!

As a teenager I was taken to the ER after my blood sodium levels had dropped to 40 meQ/L. Sweating away at a basketball & used to a low sodium diet at home was not good. I was I was close to a coma. Lucky for me I only had a horrible seizure!

Well, depends if you eat REAL salt, aka NaCl (natrium chloride) or FAKE salt aka KCl (potassium chloride)

The problem with today's "salt' is that normally, the NaCl/KCl percentage should be 70%/30%, while most "salts" we buy today contain more than 50% KCl, which btw can cause a heart-attack without being identified as the cause!!!

Salt is necessary. Just look at the fact that when you go to the hospital they immediately put you on a saline drip. No questions asked. No matter what you tell them about high blood pressure etc. they will still put you on a saline drip. Animals in the wild seek out salt licks to supplement their nutrition.
"In an ecosystem, salt/mineral licks often occur naturally, providing the sodium, calcium, iron, phosphorus and zinc required in the springtime for bone, muscle and other growth in deer and other wildlife, such as moose, elephants, cattle, woodchucks, domestic sheep, fox squirrels, mountain goats and porcupines. Harsh weather exposes salty mineral deposits that draw animals from miles away for a taste of needed nutrients. It is thought that certain fauna can detect calcium in salt licks."-quoted from Wikipedia

Re: To the "Salt is bad for you, causes high blood pressure" tards on glp, I'm here, to shut your asses up
Like everything we eat and drink there has to be a moderation.
Too little salt causes an electrolyte imbalance in the body which can lead to basic cell dysfunction.
Too much salt can lead to kidney dysfunction which does have an adverse effect on blood-pressure as they tend to retain fluid thus increasing bp (Frank-Starling's Law).
This is irrespective of the salt used (as long as it's all sodium chloride).

The recommendation of a low salt diet is not to actually reduce hypertension per se, it's to stop any further damage to the kidneys.
There's also a specific correlation of salt intake, hypertension and age. So it's wise to think about limiting your salt intake when you're older.

Surprise, surprise, the article on Mercola leads to the marketing of a "special" type of salt which is "good" for you.
Well I never...

Do you know why they put you on a saline drip, specifically 0.9% NaCl to water?

It's because it has the same tonicity as blood.
It's not to give you sodium. It's to give you fluids and as a medium for other medications etc.

If you need to have a saline drip for extended periods of time you will have blood tests to ensure your sodium (and other electrolyte levels) aren't adversely affected.
