i live in tampa, and i don't care lol. you all need to calm down, how many of you actually live within 50 miles of this incident?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 34269694

I do, about 30 miles NW from there.

They just said on the news that it's under control...boy-howdy, lots of smoke, and they have that crane working fast moving that metal around.

Close by there, yes.

Ok, so meteor spotted in Russia caused explosion/destruction of a Zinc manufacturing facility. Two days later we have meteor/fireballs spotted in Florida and an unexplained fire at a scrap metal facility.

A connection might be a stretch at this point, but if we see a 3rd and a 4th instance, we'll know something is up...

After spotting this thread, I just asked a local rock hound/geologist and rock collector (including meteor bits) whether meteors could be attracted to large amounts of metal that might attract magnets and he said it's possible depending on the meteor type. Some do respond as magnets to other metals.

hmmm

still too little information to know, but a coincidence worth noting. Put it in the notebook, Sherlock.

That's for sure. Lived there for 10 years. My parents and daughter live there and I won't even go to visit. They have to come visit me in the mountains.

Seeing this plume from my window was fucking horrible. We had to leave home for 3 weeks.

Yes, because an object travelling at over 10,000 MPH is going to feel the metal in a factory, slam on the breaks, make a U-Turn and cause some doom by zeroing in on the factory.

What's more, even though the earth itself contains unfathomably more metal than a small factory does, the factory wins the "pull in the meteor fight" every time.

Damn shame it didn't happen in Jersey then. Might have been able to cleanse the gene pool a bit while making the place look better at the same time.
