1 But these took this counsel among themselves, that they would leave the multitude of the heathen, and go forth into a further country, where never mankind dwelt,
42 That they might there keep their statutes, which they never kept in their own land.
43 And they entered into Euphrates by the narrow places of the river.
44 For the most High then shewed signs for them, and held still the flood, till they were passed over.
45 For through that country there was a great way to go, namely, of a year and a half: and the same region is called Arsareth.
46 Then dwelt they there until the latter time; and now when they shall begin to come,

Re: ORIGINAL GREEK TRANSLATIONS TO ENGLISH ! THE ENTIRE BIBLE
I'm not a Christian, but my wife is and I've translated some portions of the bible from Greek for her. Looking to the original is really important and some passages are definitely mistranslated in English. There's also important nuances that can only be conveyed in Greek (for instance, the use of tenses and participles). The best translation I've seen is the King James.

How much study have you done of the culture of the Israel people 2000 years ago?

Without understanding the culture, how can anyone claim to do a good job translating such an important work? Remember, the King James Bible was translated for a King. When there was more than one translation possible, they always chose the one that took people's God given liberties away and ordered people to obey those in charge.

Well firstly I'm not translating the whole text. I wouldn't pretend I could do that.

Second, I never claim the translation work I do is accurate. I work on Greek and Roman philosophy - I know the importance of studying the culture.

But third, reading the text in Greek is a step closer to the actual meaning than reading in English. As I said, there are many linguistic nuances that can only be appreciated by reading the Greek, such as the use of tenses and participles, but also the use of particles, cases, particular words, and the like.

When I recommended the King James, I only meant to compare it to the other prominent translations I compared it with (NKJV, NIV, English Standard, and a couple of others). I didn't mean it was always better than these, or that I'd compared it with all other translations. I'm sure there's better translations out there. But I'll say this: the KJV preserves the original use of tenses, cases, and participles far better than the NIV, NKJV, and English Standard. Syntactically, it is closer to the Greek than those.

Re: ORIGINAL GREEK TRANSLATIONS TO ENGLISH ! THE ENTIRE BIBLE
What came before Greek? I read somewhere that the Genesis part came from Sumerian clay tablet. that's 4,000-6,000 years ago.

I don't know if it's true or not.

Re: ORIGINAL GREEK TRANSLATIONS TO ENGLISH ! THE ENTIRE BIBLE
Jesus spoke Greek? You learn something new every day. I thought he spoke English because I have been told many times that every word of the bible is true.

OP you have just shattered my illusion. If words have been translated from ancient languages to Greek to English, via Latin then this cannot possibly be true.

Someone is lying.

OP, you really should change your tread title. Only the New Testament was written in Greek. The Old Testament (3/4 of the Bible) was written in Hebrew. The 'Ancient Greek' language didn't exist at the time most of the Old Testament was written.

You can't convince a believer of anything; for their belief is not based on evidence, it's based on a deep seated need to believe.
