It wont be a big deal. if all countries are downgraded so that AA or whatever becomes the highest that any country has, then that will be the new triple A. double A will be the new triple A. Its all relative.

That' isn't the point with who it compares too......... Borrowing becomes more expensive, and interest rates rise, it's the worst news possible if true.

It will stifle recovery.

Some ANALysts reckon that S&P will wait til after the UK budget on March, 20th, and that a downgrade is already priced in...they're probably right, knowing how broken the markets are, atm.

isnt the USA already downgraded from triple A?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1546575

There are the big three ratings agencies. Standard & Poor's, Moody's, and Fitch.

Two of the ratings agencies still have the USA at AAA, Moody's downgraded US Debt to AA+ awhile back...

As long as two of the three continue to have the USA at AAA, T-Bill's are acceptable investments for certain types of banking activities, if one more ratings agency drops the US to AA, then Bank's will have to find other AAA rated bonds to hold their capital in, or the regulators will have to change the rules...

One guess as to which will happen...

This is actually seen as a good thing, exported goods from UK will be cheaper, this will create the much needed growth, the bad part is inflation in the UK will go up much faster...

But if every country devalued its currency, and played fairly, we would have nothing to really worry about, as that would also make goods being imported cheaper, and then suddenly everyone has more money than they can spend again.

Then the cycle repeats

It obviously takes time for everything to balance out but when it does we will be in a much better position.

if the pound is too strong it effects our exports, no one will buy from us causing stagnation and eventually contraction has to kick in which is what we are witnessing now. Contraction is no where near as bad as a recession...

Eventually company's will have to reduce their prices or they will go bust...

Who's doing the downgrade? Who makes the decision to 'downgrade' a countries currency and economy. Wait! Let me guess... It's a group of Economists who are Paid/Bought by the Multinational Corporations who have the best interests of the British/European workers at heart...Sounds Legit..

>>>> Not so sure. For all of Britain's woes, it is still for some bizarre reason, seen as the bedrock of world finances.

The reason is.... that the UK has a Government that is rithless enough to put all necessary cuts IMMEDIATELY into progress to prevent damage to its long term situation. If 40,000 civil servants had to be sacked to keep spending to safe levels, they'd be out the door 10 seconds later.

This is in drastic contrast to Greece where no-one wanted to "wake up and smell the coffee" and the USA where their answer to execessive borrowing is MORE borrowing and spending.

This is a HUGE thing.

It has been utterly central to the Government's strategy that all the people sleeping in the street, the people having their welfare cut to two pounds a week after rent was all worthwhile to prevent a downgrade.

If they do get downgraded, there will be a near riot in the backbenchers as backbench MP's find that they have nothing to say to all theri constituents sleeping under bridges.

It is hard to see how Cameron could aviod kicking out his Chancellor (Finance Minister) and hiring someone eles in a big reshuffle.

After such a dwongrade...

- Loads of ministers will be booted.
- A huge new round of public sector cuts will impact.
- "Europe" will get a savage beating with a stick in the Press and the demands for Britain to kick the EU out of its world will quickly become overwhelming.

Unlike the USA, this will not lead to a conventional crash.

The Government WILL respond with drastic measures which will be well greeted by market as good news in a way as it will mean that the Government will be given the stick it needs to beat welfare into the ground, slash Government expenditure and kick Europe out of bed.

If anything, a UK downgrade will...

- Whack Greece, Spain, Italy
- Whack European importers to the UK
- Whack engineering firms involved in large Public projects
