Franbennet User ID: 28527507 United States 02/23/2013 01:28 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Temazepam is a benzodizapine drug and considered to be a minor tranquilizer. There is, however, a glitch in that "minor" thing. Basically, all the benzo drugs - Xanax, (Alprazolam) Ativan,(Lorazepam), Valium (Diazepam) Clonazepam (Klonopin) are based on the same molecule which is tweaked a little on the molecular level so as to make it more suitable for certain reasons. These drugs -- which are basically all close cousins of Valium -- are very addicting -- Xanax being the most addictive -- and withdrawal from these medication can be a very serious -- sometimes life threatening issue. I won't go on and on, but yes, these benzo drugs are safe when used as directed, but many people who are prescribed them for various anxiety or insomnia issues or muscle spasm issues, do not use them properly and doctors are quick to up the dosages for patients who develop a tolerance. Eventually a percentage of patients, especially those who take the shorter acting ones like Temazepam, get withdrawal symptoms in spite of the fact that they are taking their daily dose. All Benzos are interchangeable if the goal is to ward off withdrawal symptoms. In many cases, benzodiazepine addiction is much more difficult to overcome than heroin addiction and usually the patient has to be weaned off over a long course. Sometimes this weaning process can take years. That sounds extreme but it is true and in some cases a complete cessation of the drug is impossible for some patients. With that said, these drugs are not associated with murder or psychotic behavior. It's a case of which came first, the chicken or the egg? There is something wrong with the person and the doctor prescribes a benzo tranqullizer -- not always a great idea -- but they work. They are all very valuable drugs in all forms of medicine. Valium and Ativan are very important drugs in the arsenal of an ER. They work very well and have very specific actions that most often save lives. Perhaps an addicted person so desperate to get the drug will do something violent but as a rule, a violent "paradoxical" reaction is extremely rare. There was a case where a policeman shot and killed his patrol partner and used benzo rage as an excuse, but he was eventually convicted of murder. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 35016945 United States 02/23/2013 01:40 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | NOBODY said anything about benzo withdrawl or bensos being in any way bad until right after they mostly all went off patent and became cheap via generics. They made up the bad reputation to move people onto expensive new more complex drugs under patent. |

This benzodiazepine was developed by a military lab during the Vietnam era. It was given to U.S. bomber pilots (B52) the week before they had a "job"; and the days after. It literally made them wake up WITHOUT ANY EMPATHY whatsoever. And the ability to just "forget" and be able to sleep right after bombing. |
