ethanol gas to power back up generators ( Disscution) PREPPERS
Let us pretend for this discussion the SHTF has indeed happened. Natural Gas is shut down ( I have a tri fuel Generator) Gas stations are dry, and propane is unavailable.

It is a fairly easy process to get a permit to produce ethanol gas at home. and its a free permit as far as i know. It is Illegal to operate a still without one. ( that being said)

For this discussion total collapse has occurred and you need power. the emergency broadcast system has stated that electric power will be restored soon in a rolling system that will give each home power for 6 hours per day. ( they have said this for two weeks now and your confidence is fading.)

OK THEN : i'v been researching ethanol and wood gas alternatives.

the ease of producing ethanol has peaked my interest. the question i bring to my fellow GLP'ers is this. have any of you blown up your generator ( ouch ) using this fuel or do you have some success story's and tips , tricks to share with me and this forum's prepared minded community ?

before i go head strong into making a prototype and spending hard earned coin on this. i need more experiences to read and i'v been reading alot. most sites are talking E85 and thats fine but when there's no 15% gas to add to ethanol will it work on E100 for lack of a better term.?

Ethanol is easy to make. I plan to make Whiskey/Moonshine with my corn.

Ethanol can be drank or use as fuel or fire starting liquid.

Best part is it is easily made, reproduced ect...

Good call OP!

yes alot of uses for it. wood gas producing will also run a generator in a pinch. as long as one has available wood. i like the idea of ethanol because you can use so many things that contain natural sugars.

this video i found very interesting on the subject. this man is heating rubbing alcohol to run the vapors to his generator. using the vapors he claims better fuel efficiency. very interesting

attracts moisture real easy so long term storage is difficult

Alcohol burns cooler than gas. You will have to tweak the generator to run straight Alcohol.

Re: ethanol gas to power back up generators ( Disscution) PREPPERS
I've been brewing ethanol for years. I run my law mower and my enduro motorcycle off it.

I bought a custom made 50L still from Mile High Distillers. Biggest one
They had at the time. I think the biggest prob you would have in a shtf scenario is finding good stuff to ferment to actually get quantity of shine. And quality. Plus yeast doesn't store well so you'll want to learn how to cultivate your own. It can be done I guess.

You can order truckloads of stuff from farmers. But it will rot. Not sure how that would work. I grow Sunchokes. Jerusalem Artichokes. They grow out of control and have a very high sugar content. Much more than corn. At this point they are probably spreading across my county. They are like a sweet potAto. Good to eat too. But they make the best ethanol.

My bike runs great. Same with law mower. They use more fuel than if on gas alone. You need a carb and you'll have to drill the jets out a hair so they run 'rich'. And they need to warm up more. I figured each gallon costs me about .50 cents as a final product not including my labor. It takes time to distill a quality brew if you want the water out. You can't just cook it. Use an electric plate for best temp control and practice practice.

Besides fuel you can drink the stuff as long as you aren't mixing has in. In a collapse scenario having quality booze for cheap will make you a lord.

In hindsight I would probably just buy a large tank and buy 10,000 gallons of diesel. That's more than you'll use in a lifetime. Easier than distilling. Then I'd just brew ethanol for drink to sell. Medicinal purposes. And for lanterns.

It has many important uses. But for fuel for an engine I've learned that it won't be practical in the long run especially for a generator. You're better off with a couple wind generators and solar panels.

Just my thoughts. But definitely get a still. A good one with quality spare parts. Learn the science. Perfect the art.

THANK YOU !! i have read a bit on the artichokes. one poster said you can get 200 gallons off one acre of those. seems amazing ! besides drilling the Jets out, iv read a bit on upgrading my fuel lines. have you done that as well or is that overkill?

We were about to go into production of "Flavored Corn Beer's" when I had my JMCP Oil company.

It was one of my publicly traded companies, ticker symbol was JMCP now it's JMON

The ethanol will dry out rubber components faster than gas but its not overnight like the naysayers claim. But you'll want spares for the long run. Your engine will be clean from Ethanol. It will have a longer life. Gasoline kills engines.

Older machines run better on ethanol. It helps if you are mechanically inclined or at least familiar with the carburetor on your device.

Why are preppers obsessed with generators ?
You can live perfectly good without electricity

i think its a quality thing, not a necessity thing. i could live like the Amish. might have to one day. but i'm not going too unless i have too.

the Amish community are all around me and i like them. they are fair (MOST) and honest people. and my three Dogs love when they roll down my road ( J/K ) ...

Re: ethanol gas to power back up generators ( Disscution) PREPPERS
as if been reading i'v found an incredible thread on the subject from ALCOHOLICS UNANIMOUS.

the link is here: [link to acbagnetwork.ning.com]

and testimony post : I have herd ethanol attracts moisture to I am blue in the face!
Were in the world are all these stupid azz none sense people come up with this stuff.
I have been running Ethanol for two years in all my equipment all my vehicles and I just do not see what others are saying. Ethanol is far more safer in any engine that runs on junk pump gas and that is a fact!
Ethanol burns totally clean, no emissions, no sludge and the fuel system will always be totally clean all the time.
As far as attracting moisture.... that is a bunch of BS! I leave my tanks for months on end in my mowers half empty, same thing with my power washer, 4wheelers and the list goes on and i have never had one single issue with water, or Acids forming in the tanks or the carburetors. Believe me
I have had my carbs of my 4wheelers at lest 20 times re jetting and such for racing and I never ever find acid or contamination or water in the tank.
Folks Ethanol will run in anything that runs on gas there are just a few things that may need to be adjusted and 90% of the time nothing...... I meen nothing needs to be done.
The oil companies and the people that run this country have got us to believe all this crap and any body who is reading this right now has found the truth the hole truth and nothing but the truth.
Folks we have been lied to for so many years, listen to the people that run ethanol / E85 forget the manuals forget the dealers, forget Joe blow your mechanic that says if you run that E85 your going to ruin your motor ( hog wash).

i think this mans view is true. this post has been written from his heart. what say you?
