Re: Is there a soul?
Although I was born and raised a Christian, early into adulthood I questioned the whole God/soul/creation thing. I eventually came to the conclusion that science is all we really have to put our "faith" in and rejected the idea of a God and afterlife. Then I had a heart attack and flat lined. I experienced a reality and existence I'd never sensed before and was in a remarkably wonderful place/dimension. Of course this can't be proven to anyone, nor do I try to convince others of my experience. Science (REAL science) is wonderful. However, too many "scientific" types have spoken much dogma and with the unscientific who try to come off as scientific by trying to negate any type of ethereal existence. A true scientist would say something like, "we don't know...there are studies that support both sides of the issues, but studies can often be in error or even biased when studying such a subject. We don't know, and can't possibly know at this time".
As for myself, it's not a belief, but a knowledge that our consciousness goes on. But this was an event unto myself and I have no right (or means) to try to prove it to anyone.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 30460893

That's interesting. People with near death experiences report to have that in common. They report of the most beautiful light tunnel and deceased relatives greeting them. Then they suddenly come back to life but remember that experience and it changes their life.

Maybe science will find ways to proof that there is consciousness one day. To say there isn't, only because it wasn't discovered scientifically yet is narrow minded. But maybe consciousness is elusive in that way and the more doors we open, the more doors appear in front of us like an infinite mystery.

Re: Is there a soul?
It's either yes or no or somewhere between. The problem I have with religion is this currency of the immortal soul.

Would you conduct your life differently if you knew you are not eternal?
 Quoting: SlimExponent

That's the big question. It seems like societies that believe in reincarnation may be living differently than the ones who think that that one life they're living is all there is.

Maybe we would be more relaxed if we knew there is no death, just an exchange of an old body for a new one and maybe we would be more aware of what we're doing in terms of cause and effect, feeling that if we do bad things we'd have to pay for them at some point.

On the other hand, thinking that there is only one life can either cause anxiety and overproduction trying to become immortal in some way by making a significant mark in one's life so that one is forever remembered or having children and grandchildren to somehow keep living on through them. It seems as if we all try to live forever and the ones who believe the soul is eternal may be less stressed out. Could that be?

Most certainly and I've never heard a better explanation then this and you might want to read the whole book for much more on the soul from God's perception. Excerpted from page 43and 47 of"Conversations with God
· an uncommon dialogue" ·
book 1
Neale Donald Walsch
1992 -1994
[link to www.humanitysteam.ru]

"Your soul (subconscious, id, spirit, past, etc.) is the sum total of every feeling you’ve ever
had (created). Your awareness of some of these is called your memory. When you have a
memory, you are said to re-member. That is, to put back together. To reassemble the parts.
When you reassemble all of the parts of you, you will have re-membered Who You Really
Are."-God hf

What the soul is after is—the highest feeling of love you can imagine. This is the soul’s
desire. This is its purpose. The soul is after the feeling. Not the knowledge, but the feeling. It
already has the knowledge, but knowledge is conceptual. Feeling is experiential. The soul
wants to feel itself, and thus to know itself in its own experience.
The highest feeling is the experience of unity with All That Is. This is the great return to Truth
for which the soul yearns. This is the feeling of perfect love. Perfect love is to feeling what perfect white is to color. Many think that white is the absence of
color. It is not. It is the inclusion of all color. White is every other color that exists, combined.
So, too, is love not the absence of an emotion (hatred, anger, lust, jealousy, covetousness),
but the summation of all feeling. It is the sum total. The aggregate amount. The everything.
Thus, for the soul to experience perfect love, it must experience every human feeling.
How can I have compassion on that which I don’t understand? How can l~ forgive in another
that which I have never experienced in Myself? So we see both the simplicity and the
awesome magnitude of the soul’s journey. We understand at last what it is up to:
The purpose of the human soul is to experience all of it—so that it can be all of it."-Godhf hi

WOW. This is great!!
We should not reject negative feelings, but instead accept them, integrate them and turn them into love to become complete and whole.

The soul seems to be a taboo subject to talk about in our society. Why is that so?
Are people embarrassed to say what they feel? Are we too much based in mind and does the soul subject seem too esoteric to reflect on?

I think it's taboo because it's such a grey area. People are afraid of what they don't understand. There hasn't been much scientific research on the subject either - if at all.

The soul is most definitely real though.

To feel as if you "have a soul" in my opinion is flawed. Having a soul implies to be separate from the rest of the works. I just don't see where one ends and the other begins. That is to say there is nothing else then yourself. You are the self, and that's the whole universe. You don't have anything because you are everything.

If we are the soul and do not have a soul, what about the ego? What is ego compared to the soul? You say you are not separate from your soul. Do you also think you are the ego? is the ego and the soul in conflict? Is the ego something we create and the soul something we are given? Ir is the soul like someone said the totality of our experience that is always us and the ego maybe something we create anew in each life?

Ego is a myth. As real as a telephone number.
 Quoting: Sunyata

It's maybe a matter of definition of what ego is. Ego is the sense of self identified with your current life story. The false center. The soul is your true center.
Ego starts growing as the child grows. The parents, the schools, colleges, university, they all help to strengthen the ego for the simple reason that for centuries man had to struggle to survive and the idea has become a fixation, a deep unconscious conditioning, that only strong egos can survive in the struggle of life. Life has become just a struggle to survive. And scientists have made it even more convincing with the theory of the survival of the fittest. So we help every child to become more and more strong in the ego, and it is there that the problem arises.
Happiness is the death of the ego. If you want to remain a separate entity from existence as almost everybody is trying to do, you will be afraid of being blissful, cheerful. You will feel guilty in being blissful. You will feel suicidal because you are committing suicide on the psychological level, on the level of the ego.

Re: Is there a soul?
I've heard it explained thus:
I am spirit; I have a soul; I inhabit a physical body.

The eternal substance that I am is spirit.
Everything my spirit experiences is recorded within the soul.
The physical body is merely a vessel for incarnation (in the physical planes)

The ego is relative to physical existence and the personality construct, which changes with each incarnation. Ego is a program of sorts -- not spirit, nor soul.

My personal belief is that the substance that I am, the spirit that is me, is a fractal of, a unique aspect of The All That Is - the All is One, the One is All.

And as someone said before the soul contains the totality of all your previous experiences. When the soul leaves the body at the time of death, it contains all skills/talents you ever acquired, your personality, level of consciousness, wisdom and your karma (the good and bad you did and that needs to play out in your future lives) that it brings with it to its next incarnation. Once the soul completes its journey and no reincarnation is necessary, it returns to the central soul where it originally came from. Some of the liberated souls choose another incarnation to help and guide others on their spiritual journey.

No one was able to proof its existence nor to disproof it.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 34792981

This is the problem. Not one single university or academic and research institution has tried full force to find out if the soul exists or not.

Millions of dollars are spent on bullshit studies and research, but not a single brave scientist has had the balls to even try and tackle this question in all seriousness.

It wouldnt be that difficult. Create a box (or container) that allows no energy/waves/particles/radiation/signals/etc to penetrate it or escape it. On the inside of the container, line it with every sensor/detector imaginable.

Then place a terminally ill person who is close to death, or a prisoner that is being executed, or laboratory animal that is dying, in it, and collect the sensors/detectors data to see if something actually leaves the body or not, or what the difference is, if any. Then try to eliminate the obvious such as heat, water vapor, etc etc.

The second way, create a computer that can physically see what the human mind sees when attached to the person, basically a mind reading computer. Then attach it to some terminally ill patients near death, and see what their minds see.

Third way, create a electronic device/gadget/receiver that can somehow connect to consciousness and see if it is able to hear dead people, possibly communicate with them.

Or do all of the above.

Only then will people know what the true answer is. Until that point, people will only find out at death whether its a yes or a no.

Interesting ideas but...A mind reading computer. That doesn't seem so easy to do. hmm

A device that connects to consciousness, maybe hmmm. I bet the industry would find more profitable and possibly more evil ways to use a mind reading computer and a device that reads consciousness than looking for a soul and if they found it, what would they do than. Maybe it's better that the soul is a mystery until humanity mature to understand and respect the secrets and until then everyone can find and define their own understanding of the soul and decide whether they believe there is a soul or not,

There was one experiment conducted though:
Weight of the soul
In 1901 Dr Duncan MacDougall made weight measurements of patients as they died. He claimed that there was weight loss of varying amounts at the time of death. His results have never been reproduced, and are generally regarded either as meaningless or considered to have had little if any scientific merit.

Reportedly as people were being weighted as they died, their bodies actually lost mass, significant mass...

This is contested, though but at one time someone did an experiment and it was claimed that 3/4 of an ounce disappeared when the person died.

Supposedly the experiments were duplicated and no further proof was found.

For thousands of years people speak of the soul. No one was able to proof its existence nor to disproof it. Even though scientists were able to trigger spiritual experiences by stimulating certain parts of the brain and therefore claim that the brain is responsible for our experience, the question remains what makes the experience subjective and personal? In other words, there is an 'I' consciousness that can only be experienced by one self. No one can know how another person feels and what their experience is.

We are not just made of matter that reacts to different chemical/biological processes within our organism and brain. There seems to be a life force and soul consciousness. Something that gives life and speaks to us.
Everyone has a subjective and unique experience of their existence. No two are alike. We don't even know when we speak of colors, let's say blue, that blue looks the same to one person as to another.

Some deceased people make themselves known to their loved ones after they left their bodies. Is that their soul contacting their loved ones. Do we have a soul? What is it? Some say it 's invisible, some say it doesn't exist, some say it does. Your thoughts please.

Re: Is there a soul?
“What is the difference between monad, soul and spirit?”

“The term monad means that simple, indivisible unit which owns sense for itself and unfolds from it forces which work outward. Whereby there are tunings here, of unconscious monad to conscious ones. Thus, the soul is a conscious monad, a stone of the whole world. The uppermost monad is, so to speak, God, whereby each monad has to go through all hierarchies.
She has to pass through every area of life, namely by the mineral empire as a germ, then by the plant kingdom, the animal kingdom and by the development of the child into the human realm. The monad stands behind the growing up embryo and develops its body, so that he becomes human, until you return, in the end; again back into the source, back in God's monad. The monads form the realms or classes of the monads, which emerge.
The single element begins its long developing way, while it from the lap of the divine develops its own divinity. In other words, it has its own monad being already in itself; however, it must attain the I-conscious realization of this divine monad being. Then the monad moves slowly by each realm: The stone, i.e. the monad in the stone becomes a plant; the plant an animal; the animal a person; the person a God.
The soul is the connecting instance between the super temporal, not material, perfect self and the temporal, subject-afflicted mostly imperfect personality. The soul reveals itself as individual information for the person, as his completely personal consciousness. The light, which all souls radiate, causes the progress of the world and the ascent of its peoples. All things have inevitably a cause, a driving strength, an animating reason. These souls, symbols of the detachment, have given the highest stimulating impulse to the world of the existence and will give her furthermore. The soul is an incomplete product. It is a development. Unique, but not individually - it is a part of a group expression.
Spirit in this respect is a difficult term because it goes into the transcendental. I try to define spirit, however, for the purposes of the connection with the soul: It is the transcendent component in the person, thus the monad or the self. The life, „the spirit“, is impersonal, anonymous.
The connection of the classical trichotomy body, soul and spirit ends when humans finish the “earthly life”. The death of a human never destroys something of the life itself. Spirit shows up as a totality of the physical laws and orders, which hide behind the expiries of the inanimate nature. “

My job is not to convince anybody. I just offer information. One will profit, one not.
