Re: WEATHER ALLERTS
CONSIDERABLE CLOUD COVER
WILL LIMIT HEATING...BUT FORECAST SOUNDINGS SUGGEST THE POTENTIAL
FOR SURFACE-BASED CONVECTION BY MID AFTERNOON. LARGE SCALE FORCING
FOR ASCENT IS PRIMARILY PASSING NORTH OF THIS REGION. THIS WILL
LIMIT THE COVERAGE OF INTENSE STORMS. HOWEVER...THERE WILL REMAIN A
RISK OF ISOLATED STRONG/SEVERE STORMS ACROSS THE SLIGHT RISK AREA.

LOW LEVEL SHEAR IS QUITE STRONG...PROVIDING A CONDITIONAL THREAT OF
SUPERCELLS AND ISOLATED TORNADOES TODAY. HOWEVER...THE PRIMARY
RISKS ARE LIKELY TO BE LOCALLY DAMAGING WINDS AND SOME HAIL IN THE
STRONGER CELLS.

DISCUSSION...16Z SURFACE ANALYSIS PLACED A CYCLONE AROUND 45 SE CRS
WITH A WARM FRONT ARCING SEWD TO NEAR BPT AND A COLD FRONT EXTENDING
SWWD TO CLL. PERSISTENT WARM SECTOR BAND OF SHOWERS/ISOLATED TSTMS
HAS SHOWN SOME SIGNS OF DEEPENING AND SEPARATING INTO MORE DISCRETE
CONVECTION IN THE PAST HALF HOUR AS THE SPATIAL GAP BETWEEN THIS AND
THE COLD FRONT HAS DECREASED. IF THIS TREND CONTINUES...THERE IS
CONCERN THAT A SUPERCELL OR TWO COULD FORM BEFORE CROSSING THE WARM
FRONT AND BECOME INCREASINGLY ELEVATED ABOVE A COLDER/STABLE
BOUNDARY LAYER. GIVEN 0-1 KM SRH AROUND 500 M2/S2 SAMPLED IN THE HGX
VWP...A TORNADO AND LOCALLY DAMAGING WINDS WOULD BE THE PRIMARY
THREATS IN THE WARM SECTOR...WITH A MARGINAL RISK FOR SEVERE HAIL N
OF THE FRONT.

Re: WEATHER ALLERTS
Well, the line of storms that moved across northern and central parts of Texas earlier turned out to be a bit wimpier than anticipated, but still dropped a bit of much needed rain. Ongoing areas of storms down around the Houston/Beaumont area will continue to be problematic for a few more hours with possible tornadoes, gusty winds, frequent lightning and hail. The panhandle is still receiving some light areas of snow northeast of Amarillo, but this is expected to exit the region within a few hours. We’re anticipating the release of preliminary snowfall reports shortly, but it looks like some areas in the northern areas of the panhandle have received at least a foot of snow. Elsewhere, across the state, the skies are clear, the sun is shining and temps will warm up quite nicely today! Lows tonight will drop back to mostly seasonable temps in the 30′s and 40′s across much of the state. We’ll continue to keep our eyes on southeast Texas until this batch of storms exits into Louisiana.

Here is another picture of the watch area.

US National Weather Service Lake Charles Louisiana

A Tornado Watch has been issued across our area through 7:00 PM this evening. A Tornado Watch means that conditions are favorable for the development of tornados in and around the watch area. Please monitor local meda and be prepared to take action should a severe thunderstorm or tornado warning be issued.

[link to www.facebook.com]

I'm pretty sure the watch area will be expanded later today as the storms start to move east.

Luis, why don't you change the title of this thread to something like...Tornado threat for today...Southern US

(That would pretty much cover most of the south which is where most of the tornado warnings will be)

TORNADO WATCH NUMBER 37
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK

PORTIONS OF SOUTHEAST TEXAS

EFFECTIVE THIS THURSDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING FROM 140 PM UNTIL
700 PM CST.

TORNADOES...HAIL TO 1.5 INCHES IN DIAMETER...THUNDERSTORM WIND
GUSTS TO 70 MPH...AND DANGEROUS LIGHTNING ARE POSSIBLE IN THESE
AREAS.

THE TORNADO WATCH AREA IS APPROXIMATELY ALONG AND 65 STATUTE
MILES EAST AND WEST OF A LINE FROM 5 MILES EAST SOUTHEAST OF LAKE
CHARLES LOUISIANA TO 25 MILES NORTHEAST OF NATCHITOCHES
LOUISIANA. FOR A COMPLETE DEPICTION OF THE WATCH SEE THE
ASSOCIATED WATCH OUTLINE UPDATE (WOUS64 KWNS WOU7).

REMEMBER...A TORNADO WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE FOR
TORNADOES AND SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH
AREA. PERSONS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR
THREATENING WEATHER CONDITIONS AND LISTEN FOR LATER STATEMENTS
AND POSSIBLE WARNINGS.

DISCUSSION...THUNDERSTORMS CONTINUE TO INTENSIFY ALONG AND IN
ADVANCE OF A COLD FRONT AND NORTHWARD-MOVING WARM FRONT. MOISTENING
BOUNDARY LAYER AND SUFFICIENT DEEP-LAYER SHEAR EXISTS FOR SUPERCELLS
AS WELL AS BOWING SEGMENTS. TORNADO POTENTIAL WILL BE RELATIVELY
HIGHEST FOR STORMS IN THE VICINITY OF THE WARM FRONT AND POSSIBLY
WITH MESOVORTICES ASSOCIATED WITH STRONGER BOWING SEGMENTS.

AVIATION...TORNADOES AND A FEW SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH HAIL

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY

VALID 211922Z - 212115Z

PROBABILITY OF WATCH ISSUANCE...20 PERCENT

SUMMARY...THREAT FOR ISOLATED SEVERE HAIL AND LOCALIZED DAMAGING
WINDS WILL EXIST WITH PRIMARILY ELEVATED TSTMS DEEPENING ACROSS A
WARM FRONT SLOWLY ADVANCING NWD ACROSS SRN LA. A BRIEF TORNADO RISK
ALSO EXISTS IMMEDIATELY ALONG THE FRONTAL ZONE.

DISCUSSION...SW/NE-ORIENTED BANDS OF CONVECTION HAVE PERSISTED FROM
THE LA COAST ACROSS A WNW/ESE-ORIENTED WARM FRONT EXTENDING FROM 30
N LCH TO LFT TO 20 S MSY AS OF 19Z. BASED ON 18Z LCH/LIX RAOBS IT
APPEARS THAT MIDDLE 60S SURFACE DEW POINTS ARE REQUIRED FOR
