I hope that every single human being dies tomorrow so that this planet can find peace and balance again.

We're not supposed to be here. We're a parasite!
 Quoting: Norseman2083

Norseman, how about we flip that around? We're here to respect our world, and protect everything in and on it?

That way we take responsibility for our own actions. hf

We're here for a reason, and have brains this large for a reason too.
 Quoting: BadHairDay

When I see this movie I cant't find one reason for us to be here. It might be a reason, but mankind has forgotten what it was.

That's why we should leave this planet alone.

Find a dead bird, add a handful of plastic caps and junk, take a picture, and there you go.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was all staged.
Why would a bird eat so much plastic? That is not part of their natural diet...They would not recognize it as a food.

Otherwise, I do feel sorry for any living thing dying in pain and suffering!

Re: More than 2000 miles from the nearest continent - This film should be seen by the entire world
First of all, who is this photographer? what is his background? political affiliation? (I can guess), - who directed, who funded the project --
obviously certain documentarians are running out of subject matter to cast yet another stone at humanity (to go to such a far-flung region in the first place).

It's mighty easy to depict the flora and fauna in an idyllic setting with a sleepy, Spanish guitar lulling you to lower your defenses. Only to rape your eyes with the images that follow. It's film 101 -- and with that you're snared.

These films are not unlike the news that just hang in the wallows of the evil that men do. I am sure there are just as many positive and uplifting subjects on the planet that films could reveal. Just sick of self-loving/loathing filmmakers .

While not denying this does happen to birds (fish, animals) it's just become tiresome to see so many examples of this kind of filmmaking. especially if any of the footage had been doctored to further a point.

After all, if you're gonna spend $$$ on making a movie in the middle of nowhere - u better come home with some decent footage.....
 Quoting: Jinxy McDeath

I agree... this is a propaganda film and if it made you sad it worked. Don't get it twisted. Hundreds of thousands of those type of birds die from autos every year and this trash in their stomach could of been anything it just happened to be floating plastic tis time. What if it was pebbles or something else they could swoop up at any given time. They are scavengers and scavengers eat anything. I feel sad that we have to go to these lengths just to show people that they are the problem. You nor I are the problem. The problem in this case was the wind that blew those caps into the ocean and those stupid ass birds ate them. Period.

bump

Heartbreaking!!!
 Quoting: Abi ~

Well, better get used to it, because the way that selfish, brainless, idiots continue to shit out redundant, equally brain-dead offspring, just ensures that the problem will only intensify.

And... You can rest assured, that even if they were waist deep in used Huggies diapers, that they would CONTINUE to crank out more eaters, as if there were an unlimited supply of resources, and as if the earth was just their trash can.

I just LOVE all the oohing and ahhing, and words being used, like "heartbreaking", by people who've helped do the polluting, along with their litters of kids, and grandkids.

I do agree with the Chinese on ONE thing. And that is, FORCING people to STOP shitting out useless little clones of themselves. Sounds "evil"... Right? But what is more "evil"? Letting the earth be completely contaminated, polluted, depleted, and made into a living nightmare? Or keeping stubborn idiots who CAN'T AFFORD KIDS ANYWAY, from exponentially adding to the problem?

People will NOT stop breeding on their own, either out of brainlessness, irresponsibility, selfishness, spite, or whatever. The ONLY way to STOP the insanity, is to FORCE people to STOP. Or pay a hefty penalty if they INSIST on contributing to the nightmare.

And don't give me this horse shit about how things could work fine with 7 or 8 (or 9 or 10) billion people, if only it were "managed" properly. Stop living in the world of "the way things ought to be", and start solving the problem, by living in the world of "THE WAY THINGS ARE". At least until we have the NIGHTMARE under control.

I am not in ANY way in favor of murder or genocide. Or doing what The Powers That Suck want to do, by eliminating BILLIONS of people. But I am ALL in favor in STOPPING this insanity from growing worse, and turning things around, rather than continuing to watch it reach a point of no return.

The people who can LEAST afford to have children, are the ones who are insisting on having the most. The people with the lowest IQ's are the ones who are CARELESSLY exacerbating the problem the most.

This bullshit has GOT to stop.

Why are some of the birds doing well, flying around by the hundreds of thousands, etc, but other are dying, even before they leave the nest?

This problem has been around for many decades, but the birds seem to be thriving, overall.

Sad, yes, but why are some birds stuffed with plastic garbage while others are doing seemingly fine?

This is exactly my thought. The birds who don't decide to eat things that are obviously not food will live and the species will prosper because of it.

I see no reason why I should feel bad about retarded birds eating handfuls of bottle caps, brushes, and other plastic objects until they explode and die.

But...maybe I'm just an asshole.

So sad... made me cry.

We're killing God's creatures and don't even realize it. We were ordered to care for them and look what we've done !!

When I go to the grocery store, I take my own bags. Got tired of them asking "paper or plastic?" - one's just as bad as the other. Plastic pollutes for what, 10,000 years???? and paper kills trees (where our oxygen comes from).

I don't think this earth can be fixed at this point. It's all about money for big corporations, and it's all about convenience for this "throw-away" society.

I can't tell you how awful I feel at this point !!!

My tears won't fix the problem. I can only do my part in my own personal little world, which doesn't amount to much and will never alter the trend.

LOL! Get this, our local dump actually employs someone to wrangle a falcon to drive away the other birds! It actually does seem to work as i've seen it on patrol!

Even now as I type I can hear one of the local gulls who always hangs out on the roof scratching about...he sits up there waiting for the low tide goodies to float in.... they (and their brethren) were here long before us and will surely be here longer than we ever will...

I personally know a girl that was stationed on tern island, which is a protected bird sanctuary close to midway, and the birds are not thriving, that is why they are protected. She says that the beaches are now made of plastic there, tiny microscopic bits. I am amazed by the ignorance of some of the comments. The plastic is being fed to them by thier parents, leaving no room for real food. On the south point of Hawaii island, there is a beach that collects garbage. Every year they go and haul away TONS of garbage, and you can't even tell. This is a result of our plastic society. Who of you will attempt to live without plastic? It is nearly impossible. The solution is to create plastic with hemp that will biodegrade, and to farm that plastic out of the ocean. It will take a lot for all of us to get off of plastic, but we must. We can choose to do it(the easy way), or the earth will choose for us(the hard way).

of course something will be done about it....the film will be released for a limited time theatrically (to qualify for next year's Oscars for Best Documentary) - once that theatre run is over its rights will be sold to cable, Netflix and the like and numerous plastic DVDs will be produced that will also be thrown away someday where some other creature will choose to avoid or snack on.

but seriously, the only thing one could do would be to devise a means to house a beverage without the use of a cap. the one who gets off his arse to do this and to do the slog of convincing the producers of these products will be the chap that deserves a film to be made about. for now, just know that these are resilient creatures- they do survive beyond the poor ones that don't. i live here on the coast and see the circle of life taking place at an amazing clip. they are fine.

Re: More than 2000 miles from the nearest continent - This film should be seen by the entire world
Its really sad to see how many people here,

will eat up any garbage they're fed.

Let me tell you a little story.

The buddha sat below the tree and called the birds.

One by one they came.

He took each one in his hands and strangled them to death.

The monks were shocked!

WHAT'S HE DOING? OUTRAGEOUS!

The buddha replied.

I'm just helping them out of the trap.

They're stuck in bird bodies.

---------------------------------

Even those who dont believe in the Buddha,

need to understand, logically, scientifically,

that a physical body is nothing but a trap.

Those who leave it, are better than those who're still stuck in it.

Over and over we're been told the truth by Buddhas, Mahatamas, Prophets.

Dont be attacked to the body. The body is nothing.

Body is temporary. Self is eternal.

Be the self!

Even your own body is not precious, let alone your

unhappiness at seeing someone else's body suffer.

If you cant break your attachment to your own body,

atleast dont form new attachments to other bodies.

That photographer should be proud of the deception that he's playing on you all.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28994760

It does seem a little conspiratorial that the piles of plastics in each bird looks like exactly the same stuff...you'd think there would be a greater variety of plastics and junk they have ingested.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 15244914

the birds can see bright colors or it is the shape/shapes that they can fit into their beak to easily carry back to the baby birds.

Using clear bottle caps would help a lot to save those baby birds if it is the bright colors that confuse the mother birds, and/or a different design that would hinder the mother birds from picking up the bottle caps.

Let me get this straight.

If the bird cannot distinguish between its food and plastic,

that bird is stupid. And dies.

Its called natural selection.

If someone walked in while tweeting infront of a car,

and the videos was uploaded on youtube,

i get it. although I would not say they are ignorant comments. i too have seen those floating isles of trash -- the one thing i would like to question is who is/are the entities that were responsible for disposing of the stuff in the first place? i think what they have done/do is criminal. if they were contracted to dispose of trash how and why does it make its way to sea?

we're already having the choice to live without plastic made for us here in Monterey -- Grocery stores don't carry plastic bags, take-out food is in bio-degradeable containers (that disintegrates as hot food lays in it), and we're asked to separate caps from bottles when we recycle. so stuff is being done on our parts --there's just a couple of rat bastards out there who do ill on much larger scales.
